Went here for dinner after walking about the city. Sat on the 3rd floor in the bar. Rotating beer menu great; actually changed a couple of selections while we were there. Had stew and bread for our meal; absolutely scrumptious. Also LOVE the fact its a dog-friendly pub. 2 people had their dogs in while we were there and it was nice to see. Wish we in North America could be a little more enlightened.

If you love quality beer and bar food in a very cosy atmosphere then this place is a must during a visit to York. It’s a small bar with a great selection of ales, plus Belgian and German beers.
Below is an awesome off sales shop with some of the hardest to find drinks up for grabs. Not to mention the largest collection of gin I’ve ever seen.

No winter expedition to York is complete without a trip to Trembling Madness. Whether you're there for the beer, food or to pick up a bit of booze to take home, it's the perfect little hidey-hole.

Like stepping into the past with craft beer, candlelight and hunting trophies on the wall. Stopped in for a pint of craft beer and wasn’t disappointed with a caramel stout. Reasonably priced as well. The atmosphere is unique, with its wooden pews, exposed beams and lit wax candles. Staff are knowledgeable and welcoming. Absolutely worth a visit. And, don’t miss the shop on the ground floor!

A beautiful bar above a drinks shop. Totally worth visiting even for one drink just for the unique atmosphere !! Bar is small, so service is best they can offer with the space available but does make it a little inconvenient. Not tried the food yet. An estranged selection of beers/ciders even for the UK, but I found one I like to my UK palate as a lager drinker. Very worth visiting!!

We did not eat at the bar but did buy some bottles of Belgian beer in the shop below. Would definitely go back for food as it looked very good. Note the stairs to the bar are steep so if someone has mobility issues this might be an issue.

Great place, was told about it by a friend. Said where it was as easy to miss if didn't know it was there. Didn't have anything to eat, but the food looked good. Atmosphere was ace and it is a very quirky place, oh and the selection of beers and spirits in the shop is brilliant. Still trying to figure out what to buy. 👍👍

If you want to find the bar, head through the many shelves of cans to the staircase at the back! Once you find it, it's super cosy, lovely high ceiling, exposed beams and great animal head collection. Nice selection of cask and keg beers, you can also buy anything from the ground floor and drink in if nothing on tap takes your fancy. We'd be back for sure 🍻🍺🍻

Amazing place with pub on the first floor. Great food and including vegetarian and large range of drinks. Stunning interior with original low beams and wattle & daub walls, but not one for those offended by stuffed animals and animal heads and skins. They also have 2 rooms available for overnight stays. Good location right in the heart of this great City. Ground floor is a well- stocked liquor shop with ranges of beers, wines, spirits to mind boggle. Fantastic!

You would never know this were here from street level. Tucked away in the loft space is this amazing bar, with gorgeous craft beers and more atmosphere than a place has any right to. Note: the spicy pork scratchings are HOT.

The stew was hearty and flavourful. But it qas a little too salty. If they could dial down the salt it'd be perfect. The pub is small, so be prepared to wait. Service is typical pub style service.

What a great place of madness. In store downstairs over 400 craft beers to choose from with real ale and craft cider aswell 👌 choose one a take upstairs to drink or choose from the selection in the bar. The pork scratchings are must , rather hot though. When in York this is a must visit and say hello to Lucky who sits calmly in the fire place keeping an eye on you .👍👍

The shop has an incredible selection of beers and spirits! Upstairs the bar is Old World, Game of Thrones vibe - wonderful to sit in and enjoy drinks! We ordered some great beers and the bread and dips which was delicious!

Discovered it by accident and I’m happy I did. You enter and it’s basically a mini market with tonnes of beer all in excellent prices. Go upstairs to the small pub for superb beer selection and a small kitchen where the guys will cook huge portions of excellent food. Honestly they are huge and super cheap and tasty. Loved the ambient, loved the beer and you have to try it

I highly recommend the House of the Trembling Madness if you're ever in York. This lovely pub is located upstairs, above the shop. Check out their daily specials, particularly their stews. I had their venison stew which was delightful. Vegans and Vegetarians - there are options for you as well. We also ordered the veg sausage with mashed potatoes and peas. Yum! Pro-tip: try to visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Incredible place located in the heart of York. Serving up wholesome, hearty food for what's considered these days to be a reasonable price. The daily stew with fresh bread was bloody lovely. A range of offerings will have something for everyone. Main reason to visit this place is the beer. A great range of local and other beer along with its selection of fantastic bottled Belgian beer. Quirky, friendly hunting lodge vibes. A definite must visit when in the area. Entrance is through a bottle shop which also stocks an unfathomable range of alcohol. Love it here. Will always visit each time we're here.

Lovely quaint pub that from the front looks like a shop, you have to go through the shop and up the stairs to get to, quite steep. Very good selection of drinks on offer. Friendly staff. Good portions of food. Toilets are on the lower floor and have locked glass cabinets with alcohol on display on the way to the toilets.

A wonderful place to stop in for a drink and meal with friends. I also highly recommend exploring the ground floor and lower levels for their excellent collection of alcohol to go.

What a brilliant place, beer and spirit shop downstairs and restaurant upstairs. Beers all reasonable prices with locals and tourists purchasing whilst I was there. Nice to see so many local brands represented. The restaurant and bar is upstairs, lots of beers on tap and in the fridge. Or you can buy in the shop then take upstairs to drink, so the choice is massive. Liked that there was various price points for all budgets. Loved the medieval character of the restaurant upstairs and was greeted by two super friendly staff who were really welcoming. Amazed at the amount of food produced out of the small kitchen. Well there are cheese boards and Trembling madness ones. Looked beautiful and so much food, made with all different cheeses that were gorgeous. Grapes, fresh bread, lots of accompaniments that all paired with the cheeses lovely. The pies also looked great which the people opposite were having. They do breakfast from 10.30, then after 12 Various platters, pies, sausages, burgers plus smaller dishes and bar snacks. If you want to go somewhere with great food, generous portions, wide selection of beers and a great atmosphere, then I would highly recommend.

I’ve been up and down to York for a number of years and I was taken to the House of the Trembling Madness in my first night by a colleague. Since then it has become my firm favourite for drinks with friends and somewhere to find unique/hard-to-find beers from the shop. Service is always exceptionally friendly, prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is so relaxed!

We were recommended this place as a weird and wonderful experience that we must check out when in York and it couldn't have been more accurate. It's definitely different to what a normal pub is. You enter on the ground level with every bottle of spirit that you could possibly imagine on offer to buy. If you go down the staircase there is even more bottles of spirits in display cases. If you go up the stairs there is a bar, serving the majority of what was on the lower levels. The staff are really friendly and offered detailed suggestions and recommendations. Check it out if in York.
