Absolutely great fish and chips. We had cod, haddock, regular chips and Yorkshire fishcake. Crispy batter and perfectly cooked fish and proper chips. All steaming hot and fish cooked fresh in front of us. Can't wait to come back for more!

Its always busy for a reason. These are hands down the best fish and chips I've had anywhere, ever. And I've eaten some good fish and chips in my time. Staff are also marvellous. The small size is plenty unless you're a good eater.

Hi Everyone. Our view of this place is 5 star and whilst some reviews are less, this is our experience at the time. We parked up in the big car park, didn't see any blue badge spaces but they may have been there. We were greeted and shown to a table which we asked to change as 3 around a round table there wasn't going to work, it wasn't an issue to change. We were served by Jenny who was pretty good despite having to return to tell us 2 of our 3 meals weren't available, we took it well and made changes to our order much to the relief of said Jenny The Dark Lord of Darkness had a giant haddock and chips, his apprentice had a cheese burger and I settled for fish cakes and chips. The result of the order was hot plates (always a good start) plenty of chips and his lordships haddock was huge, we girls always like to see big ..... meals for big men. Well cooked lightly battered, dry chips not swimming in grease always a winner with us, his apprentice burger was indeed big and plenty on hot plates as was my fish cakes We didn't have starters or deserts and 3 big meals with drinks circa £50 which we felt was value for money in our experience Whilst you can't always please the masses and their opinions are extremely important to them, our opinion was 5 star and one we could recommend on our experience of the plaice...... place, plaice wasn't available !!!! Right that's us done thank you Thomsons fish and chip restaurant for a nice late afternoon lunch

We've driven past too many times, but we finally stopped in. We were greeted and seated promptly. The menu was quite extensive, but we were there for good old fish and chips. We both ordered the 8-10oz haddock with chips and mushy peas. The food arrived quickly and what a serving!! Huge! The batter on the fish was one of the best I've ever had! Light, crispy, no sogginess on the inside, and not greasy or oily. The chips were perfect. As were the mushy peas. All in all, some of the best fish and chips I've had since moving to Yorkshire!

After being recommended (by a complete stranger!) to try this establishment, I was initially disappointed to discover my preferred pie had been sold out, but the exceptionally helpful counter lady went far beyond expectations to 'magic up' one for me! Along with the very generous portion of chips, it made a superb meal; probably the best pie I've ever had, at a very reasonable price. Full marks from me at every stage - thank you for justifying my prior recommendation so well!

This was our first visit to Thompsons Famous Fish and Chips near York. This has to be hands down the best fish and chips both myself and my Dad have ever had. The fish was cooked to perfection. Nice chips with a slightly crunchy outer with a nice soft centre. All the ingredients were very fresh. We had the mini breaded Camembert for starter and this was also very well cooked with a nice crunchy outer crumb and lovely melted cheese on the inside. Very generous portion sizes as well so you do get value for money. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice large car park with plenty of spaces. The restaurant was very busy so this shows the quality of food you can expect. We live quite a way from Thompsons but would not hesitate to make a special journey to the Restaurant. Highly recommended to all. 👍👍👍

We first went to Thompson at the beginning of our holiday and it was a no brainer to have Fish and Chips. The surroundings were light, spacious and immaculately clean, with lovely friendly staff. The service was quick and the portions were huge. The Fish and Chips were delicious, nice crispy battered fish and soft fluffy chips. The mushy peas were lovely and sweet, the best mushy peas I've ever had. The food was so good we went back again later in our holiday. We had Steak and Ale Pie and Lasagne, to end the meal we shared Lemon Meringue Cheesecake, as we had some room this time. Yet again, can't fault the food, they are not just good at their Fish and Chips, all their food is delicious and of a high standard. The Steak and Ale Pie was full of flavour, with a crispy buttery pastry, lovely tender steak and a rich gravy. The Lemon Meringue Cheesecake was gorgeous, so zingy, lemony and sweet. Yet again, all big portions and good value for money. I would highly recommend visiting here, as you won't be disappointed.

In the picture is a regular cod chips and peas, lovely moist cod, proper chips (not bits), absolutely superb! Easily the best fish and chips in York by country mile, I don’t think I’ve ever had better anywhere.

Having recently visited this place on for the first time with 7 family members on Friday 25/04/24. I was amazed that this place was only 7 miles from my home and I had not tried it before. We ordered a different variety off the menu and we were massively impressed at the quality of food and service "Especially Jo the server and cook" the food was a real delight !!!! I had the Cod n chips which was great.!!! plus everyone else thoroughly enjoyed everything they had. !!! The prices and atmosphere plus staff were very exceptional. !!! This is a little GEM!!!! of a "plaice" and we look forward to returning. Jim.
