As if the wonderful setting wasn’t enough, the staff are incredibly friendly and efficient, and the food sublime. Go with their wine suggestions (they are always right) and top it all off with a cocktail or two created by Sergio in the delightful jewel toned bar upstairs. Top place to eat if you are gluten free - they have lots of great alternatives that don’t make you feel like you are being difficult.
We loved the building and the decor. And the quality of the the food was fantastic my wife cannot stop talking about the cured seabass with lime mayonnaise and I loved the braised beef cheek it just melted in the mouth. The chef delicately blends the flavours making every part of the meal a delight. All this is delivered by wonderful staff. Fine food in a beautiful and relaxed atmosphere.
I’ve been many times over the years and it will always be my favourite place to dine I love it, amazing chefs lovely wines attentive and friendly staff and it’s also just so beautiful. Will always be my favourite place to dine in winchester.
We came here for my husbands birthday. Wonderful atmospheric bar area and romantic candle lit tables. Food was gorgeous. Best Parfait we have ever eaten. Service excellent . Can not recommend highly enough . Thank you so much .
Beautiful, seasonal, tasty food served by really friendly, accommodating staff. All set in the backdrop of this quirky, listed building. All round excellent experience and I’d highly recommend.
In my humble opinion they serve the best roast dinner you are likely to eat. Also the aperitif bar is a fabulous little snug in which to enjoy a pre meal drink. Lovely barman who mixes an excellent cocktail.
Lovely food, excellent service and beautiful surroundings. Nice little Birthday treat from the staff too...the iced Chocolate Parfait was to die for!
My daughter took my husband and I to lunch here today the service and food was fantastic the decor amazing and the best ingredients used tasted awesome nothing to fault . The coriander with the Salmon starter just exquisite the roast beef tender melting in your mouth and the cheese board very fine cheese just to die for thank you for a fab experience
My first one dining here and I thoroughly enjoyed it!! First class service and the food was incredible. Would definitely visit again and would also definitely recommend. The decor was cosy and cute with a little oldy worldy about it.
Our group of eight friends had a wonderful evening at The Chesil. We were visiting Winchester for the weekend and wanted to have a special meal. We booked over the phone and on arrival were escorted to a cosy private room where we enjoyed excellent food and very nice wine. We would definitely recommend The Chesil
Our gang of eight were really looking forward to our evening at the Chesil Rectory. It has a fantastic reputation in Hampshire and a very loyal following.
Celeriac Soup with truffle oil and then roast, stuffed field mushrooms were outstanding. Although not vegetarian, these choices stood out. Others had the pork belly (unanimously ten out of ten), saddle of lamb, and hake on chargrilled leaks. I don't do the descriptions justice, but all were spot on.
The service at the Chesil Rectory is amazing. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, not sycophantic. The staff clearly size up their customers well - we received regular updates from the kitchen on the score in the Wales vs Ireland game!
The puddings were okay, but did not detract from a totally memorable and excellent evening with great food, great friends and an outstanding restaurant.

Visited 16/11/17 amazing food as always and a wonderful experience. Thank you to the young gentleman who served us and recommended the hattingley ❤️ We can’t wait to return. Thank you for another amazing romantic dinner.
Brilliant food, lovely environment and service, and do try the dessert wines they recommend with each pudding, we were amazed.
A beautiful, historic building that serves quite wonderful food. Simply stunning inside and full of character. The menu was varied yet not overtly vast and the service was spot on. The food was beautifully presented and tasted divine. A great wine list and a lively espresso martini to finish with. Highly recommended.
Oh my God! That was wonderful dining experience. We came there for lunch and were soo happy. Food was delicious. I had salmon as a starter and oven baked hake as a main course. Beautiful! At the and we had desserts, hazelnut parfait was 10 out of 10. Must visit place!
Follow Mr & Mrs R on TikTok. We chose the Chesil Refectory to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.
We enjoyed an incredible dining experience. The freshly baked bread was crunchy and the starters were delicious.
The duck was served rare and the quality was so good it just melted in the mouth.
Puddings were sublime. Wine, service, atmosphere, it’s all here.
First choice for celebrations. Dining here is being part of a well oiled machine. This team is a living work of art.
Will definitely return for another gourmet experience.
Really delicious food and great service. It's a beautiful old building, amazing features. The food was great, I had the terrine to start (I prefer a pate personally but it was good), pork for the main which was very tasty but the star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Incredible depth of flavour. Absolutely insanely delicious. The service was excellent throughout. Really great meal.
I went there for my birthday and had two course meals with friends and family. The service was impeccable and you definitely get what you pay for. The quantity was good as well for the roast Sunday lunch.
The Chesil Rectory will give you a unique dining experience. The history held within these walls is incredible. The food, wine and staff will not disappoint. It is certainly worth going out of your way to book in advanced if you are staying/ visiting the Winchester area. Make sure to check out the black bottle after if you would like to indulge in wines.
Lovely food and atmosphere here. We loved the desserts with wine pairing make sure to save room
What a find! Amazing food at this quirky restaurant. Not a cheap meal, but well worth the money. Would highly recommend.
Such a historic building and I loved the decor. On a cold winter's day when we visited they had a roaring fire so it was nice and cozy. We enjoyed a two course lunch meal deal which was very affordable. As a vegetarian they were options on the main menu and lunch menu to choose from. Staff were attentive and service times reasonable. We all very much enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back.
The Chesil Rectory dates back to around 1450, and is one of Winchester’s best preserved Medieval buildings. It’s beautiful and so cosy a setting: there are lots of exposed beams, low ceilings and warm lighting throughout. Service was impeccable, relaxed and friendly. The food was good: the bread and dukkah was very nice, I really enjoyed Charred Tender Stem with Pickled Ginger, Red Onion, Crushed Peanuts, Gochujang Emulsion and Crispy Onions to start. My main was okay - the Roasted Cauliflower with Butter Beans, Chilli, Garlic, Baby Onions and Artichoke Crisp - and I think it would have been nice to have more veggie options. The desserts were truly great: my husband’s Sticky Toffee Pudding with Black Treacle and Mascarpone looked outstanding and my Whisky & Pecan Tart with Dark Chocolate Ice Cream was tasty. Also enjoyed well-made cocktails and dessert wines. Had a wonderful time here: lovely atmosphere and rather magical to spend time in such a historic place.
