Reviews The Pear Tree Inn

I like to think I am someone who can give a review of eating establishments near and far, and am willing to pass on my experiences to any that consider the place and ask. I was very fortunate to be directed in the same way to a fine eatery in the UK just recently. Amid all the lures of fine foods in the south west of England sits a place that offers the peace and tranquility of the countryside and well prepared food from local, rustic farms. This blended with the 17th century farmhouse setting meant it was real treat for my wife and I on a visit from the USA. The Pear Tree Inn at Whitley The weather in the UK had provided somewhat of a snow day for the locals, however the staff had arrived to give the same service as always. Sunday lunch providing an opportunity to bring together some of the family from both sides of the Atlantic, meant we could experience the restaurant in full swing and enjoy our lunch with all ages of attendees. The first thing you notice is the staff are both very friendly and informed, the waitresses moving quickly through the dining rooms ensuring diners best service. Then there is the food, the menu is well presented and simple, a vast passage from restaurants with 300 choices and nowhere to really know what you want to eat. Using only the best of seasonal produce, the chef has created a menu you can both appreciate and get down to the nitty gritty of making your choice. Our repast was produced quickly and was well worthy of the menu's descriptions. They do not leave you wanting for more. During our stay we have managed to dine 3 times, covering all 3 meals and each time it has been a treat. We also stayed in one of their signature rooms, which was excellent. The staff, led by Jackie and Adrian adopt a family, friendly approach which shows in their enthusiasm. As a professional people watcher I managed to see that the staff must be hand selected and happy in their employ as they all appear such self starters. This is a great job completed by a knowledgeable and experienced team.

Amazing staff, decor very much like The Pig in Bath, with their vegetable garden and locally sourced produce. The menu was top notch homemade pub grub with finesse, good choice of meat and fish, making it a super gastro pub. We'll be making this our 'local' P.s. Love the interior design.

After a recommendation from a friend, we tried the Pear Tree for breakfast this morning. A fantastic full English! It's definitely somewhere we would go back to! Really lovely place, very friendly and helpful staff - and a bonus that they allow dogs (and provide a doggie treat or 2!) would definitely recommend it

We went for our 30th Wedding Anniversary and really enjoyed it. The staff were great, food was excellent and room was lovely. The decoration of dining room, bedroom and outside patio areas is all very stylish. We loved it.

Fabulous place. We saw it recommended in an old Sawday's book but I checked up current reviews to confirm. It did not disappoint. We stayed in one of the garden rooms for two nights and ate at the restaurant both evenings although the first night we just had a light main course only after having a large lunch elsewhere. The food is fresh, clean, seasonal and absolutely delicious. The wine list is reasonably priced. Breakfast was a lovely affair with an extensive choice of cooked dishes using local, free range produce. The Pear Tree has lovely grounds too and we were lucky enough to have good weather on Saturday afternoon to sit there with some of their local beer and cider. I'm sure that the garden is used for the produce used in the kitchen. The room was very comfortable with a glam double shower/wet room but if I have to find anything to criticise it would be the switch for the extractor fan was situated above the door frame into the bathroom. We didn't find it until we were about to leave and I wouldn't have been able to reach it. We will definitely visit again.

As a vegetarian, I was skeptical about the menu but I am blown away by the choice and quality of the food. After a great evening meal, fabulous sleep in a really comfortable room, we were greeted in the restaurant by a friendly face, the owner of which served a scrumptious breakfast. We're set up for the day now and then we'll do it all over again before returning home tomorrow. This will be a weekend to remember and I definitely can't wait to come back.

I had one of the best nights sleep here I've ever had following a competition that I'd won to stay at the Pear Tree. We were greeted by the management and shown to our room - first impression was how beautiful the decor was and how clean everything was! The room was spacious and filled with little luxuries! The bed was huge and so comfortable, and the room looked out on to the front garden of the premises. Fabulous freshly cooked breakfast served in the restaurant on both mornings with everything you could think of available! All the staff that we talked to were attentive, had a smile and a sense of humour. Unfortunately, due to other commitments we had, we never got to stay here for dinner, but it's certainly on the list of places to eat, the menu looks amazing. Thank you so much for a fabulous weekend! We thoroughly enjoyed it! (Just looked to book here for my birthday weekend and you're fully booked! I'm gutted!) Julie, Courtney and Martin xx

We came by for breakfast and the staff were warm, friendly and welcoming! The breakfast menu has a wide variety for you to choose from! I had poached eggs with avacado and it was cooked to perfection and presented really well! didn't wait long for the food either. The pub itself is beautifully decorated and feels rustic but clean and modern at the same time. Would 100% come back, will be recommending to everyone we know!

Absolutely fantastic, such a gem of a place. Staff are welcoming and friendly, food is amazing and definitely worth every penny. Stayed here for 3 nights and will be back! Rooms are individually decorated, and they have thought of everything - the fresh milk, the tea and coffee options, the comfy and cosy bed with blankets, the bathroom and its toiletries - just great! Thanks for making a stay away from home, still feel like home :)

An amazing place to stay, beautiful individually designed, spacious rooms with comfortable beds, good sized Bathrooms, with quality toiletries. Excellent service from all the Staff. Breakfast is included, and is very good, with locally sourced ingredients. We eat in the Restaurant, and the food is exceptional and interesting. A good range of Cask Ales on the Bar, together with a small selection of Craft Beer too. The grounds are superb and we'll looked after. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Pear Tree and will definitely be booking again in the future. Rooms are well equipped but built with a lot of reclaimed materials that give a nice rustic feel. The food at dinner and breakfast was absolutely first class with excellent service so we can see why this is a very popular destination for dining. The whole place is properly dog friendly - we weren't made to feel like second class citizens like many so-called dog-friendly hotels. Full marks all round!

Very welcoming place with friendly staff and nice interior. I had the burger which was very juicy due to the added brisket which makes sure it does not dry out and also provides extra flavour. The whole family was pleased with the experience. Bill for 4 adults and 4 children came to almost £200, so not a cheap place.

The gardens where beautiful and a lovely spot to enjoy a meal and drinks. Our accommodation was also spot on, we stayed in one of the retrofitted potting sheds which was super neat and clean with all facilities is good working order. The only downside we had was on the day of our arrival the kitchen was having some sort of issues with its cooking equipment which meant the menus had been severely limited. On occasion it is completely understandable that sometimes appliances can breakdown or become faulty so the fact that the menu had been limited wasn't the issue but more so there wasn't really any sort of apologies or compensation offered for this which left us both hungry and abit disappointed. Just a couple of complimentary drinks in a situation like this can go a long way. Otherwise the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend staying here and I would love to go back again myself as there was plenty of tasty sounding things on the menu!

From arrival to departure we were warmly greeted and looked after by the inns owner and team .the inn is quaint and inviting with a snug bar area at the front ,with a lovely dining area at the back looking on to the garden where you could sit under canvas with a drink. The food was fresh and tasty and the menu choice lovely, everything was prepared and served by a team who cared about their customers. The accommodation was very good and clean and well stocked with what you would need for your stay. If you're passing this way pop in and you will be happy with the choice.

I can't fault the food, it was delicious and the atmosphere was amazing, but the service was very slow. we waited over 15 minutes before we were offered a drinks list, to which we had to ask, and 45mins for our meal. There wasn't enough staff. Only 2 waitresses. Otherwise they would have 5 stars.

Without a doubt the best pub in the area. Excellent selection of food and drink, a very well put together menu and to a very high standard. Staff are professional, friendly, attentive and well organised, and the building and decor itself are beautiful. We highly recommend the Pear Tree Inn! It is the number one place to bring people for special occasions and a consistently excellent experience. Highly recommended!

Had a lovely stay in the little pod, it's so well designed and really cosy. Everything is luxurious and so many nice little touches make it very special. The surroundinh gardens are peaceful with lots of birds and wild flowers. It's a delightful way to wake up by the big porthole window and look out. Restaurant is nice and the breakfast was so delicious, one of the best I've had. The only thing that detracted from this was a grumpy waitress, service was a bit off, even though there was only 2 other people in the restaurant, we apparently we sat at the wrong table as it was set for lunch. Ok.. well maybe people expect all the tables in a small restaurant to be available for breakfast when it's breakfast time.

Nice Sunday lunch here. There is a large covered outdoor area and garden, but we sat indoors. The garden room is nicely decorated and staff very welcoming. So keen to try my lunch that I forget to snap a photo until after I had started!

Cozy room with rustic country deco, great tasting food with a warm welcoming service in a beautiful surrounding all made for a memorable celebratory weekend. I would have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the cobwebs on the windows and mould around the bath.

What another great room, tall so a bit loud but the decor and feel of the place as well as the attentive was second to none, our new favourite local (sort of)

We decided to walk in this evening after coming across this place. Asked for a table outside and was told to order at the bar although everyone else had table service that had booked. Once we received our food we were then just forgotten about. The food was amazing but the service let it down badly. Sadly we will not be revisiting, I am in the top 10% of restaurant reviews so please take this seriously.
