Reviews Kith & Kin

Going to the coast for chilled walks along the sandy beach, breathing in the sea air, relaxing on the sand as the tide goes out wave after wave - there’s already a lot to love about Whitley Bay… Was I able to add a café experience that would add to those highlights? Ran by Eve Ogilvie, Kith & Kin is a ‘coffee & kitchen’ style café serves up all day breakfast, brunch, lunch, homemade cakes, artesian coffee, loose leaf teas and carefully selected beers and wines. Serving from a menu inspired by different food cultures and countries to create exciting and satisfying dishes, the café offered much but could it deliver? I was about to find out. When we got there, we couldn’t have asked for a more inviting welcome. The place was full and one of the waitresses told us they hadn’t stopped all morning; a great sign of things to come. As we were taken to our table, I was singing along to the song playing in the background – Kith & Kin had a wonderful chilled out mix of music going on. Sat probably at the best table in the café (adjacent to the window with a view overlooking the street) it felt comfortable, it felt cosy. With the sun shining in, it was a terrific setting for brunch. To drink, as it was around 12:30pm, we decided on a pot of infused tea of lemon, mint and honey. It was so refreshing and cleansing. It began with intense aromas from the mint sweetened by the honey then the bitterness of the lemon would kick in. It was ideal for the variety of dishes we were to be served. For our main dishes, we decided to go on an around the world cultural tasting adventure by going with ‘The Aussie’ and ‘The Mexican’. The Aussie, at £8.50, was grilled halloumi, homemade beetroot hummus, sautéed mushrooms and kale, fried free-range egg, fresh herbs, sourdough toast, dukkah (blend of nuts and seeds), fresh lemon and herb olive oil. There was an option to add streaky bacon for a further £2.50 which of course I did and gluten free bread available too. The Mexican, at £8.55, was slow cooked black beans, green and red chilli salsa, zesty avocado smash, grilled tortilla, fried free-range egg, minted yoghurt, fresh lime and coriander and had an option with chorizo for a further £2.50 which again we opted for. When the plates arrived, they were huge. They definitely do massive portions at Kith & Kin. However, that didn’t mean the presentation was affected in any way as both were served as pretty as a picture and as colourful as a rainbow. Starting with The Aussie, it was an alluring plate of food. The streaky bacon was fabulously crispy. With a creamy taste, the sautéed mushrooms were smooth and soft but still needed a bite. The halloumi was bouncing around in my mouth and my taste buds couldn’t get enough of its springy saltiness. The slice of sourdough toast was crunchy on the edges and had a great texture, lovely! The egg white was gleaming and when it was smashed open, I could hear angels serenading. The star of The Aussie show was the homemade beetroot hummus. Yeah, I’ll have that on everything now please. The Mexican was also on the money. The beans were the plate’s sensation. The well-seasoned chorizo was an excellent combination with the zesty avocado too. We were both in our element. With various cakes to choose from, we went for a slice of Lemon and Blackberry Cake and a slab of Orange and Walnut Flapjack. The cake was so light, invigorating and with the blackberry sweetness, it didn’t take long to disappear. The Flapjack had a chewy, sticky texture that had a sweet tang from the orange. Brilliant. If you’ve never been, have a wander along Whitley Bay. If you want an established café to start off your day or round off your afternoon, I challenge you to find one as peaceful yet charming as Kith & Kin nearby... You won’t be disappointed. Ideal location, smiling faces, feels like family. That’s just it, the name says it all, Kith & Kin, for friends and family. You’ll feel automatically part of the furniture. It’s not a question of if you will return but when… Probably the same time next week thanks

New resturant in Whitley Bay with polite friendly staff, nice atmosphere with tasty food at a good price. I like the bar at the window where you can sit and watch the world go by. It will face competition from the other coffee, food and cake restaurants in the town but for me what I liked about Kith and Kin was that it felt quite trendy while not being too different that it pigeon holed itself in to only one type of dinner going to it. Young or old you would feel comfortable and enjoy eating and drinking there. I'll be back 😊

The first time we've been to Kith and Kin and it was absolutely fantastic. Wonderful steak sandwich, with beef from Nicholson's, a nice loose leaf Earl Grey tea. My partner had The Aussie (fried eggs, bacon, kale, mushrooms, toast, and a beetroot hummus). All in all one of the nicest lunches I've had in Whitley Bay...ever!

It was our first visit to Kith & Kin today and we enjoyed it so much. We were made to feel welcome straight away by the friendly staff, who asked us to choose a seat and told us how to order. The menu was easy to breeze through and all sounded great. We both chose the day's special, which was steak & eggs. It was so good! Service was quick, the food was amazing, steak cooked exactly as we asked and the side of sourdough toast was lovely too. Our coffees we had were really nice and we even bought a piece of cake to take home. We will definitely be back!

First of what will be many visits to this fabulous venue. The setting is contemporary but still homely and the food is just amazing. I had The Aussie today and would highly recommend it. I followed this with a beautiful piece of what was clearly homemade cake and tea. A little gem in Whitley bay

Just left Kith & Kin feeling extremely happy and satisfied - so much so that I've had to come on and write a review. The staff are super friendly, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was very chilled with a lovely, fresh decor throughout. Can't wait to visit again soon! (I would recommend the Shakshuka and the steak & halloumi baguette )

Best steak sandwich I've ever had! Not at all greasy, comes Medium rare. The steak had a sharp salsa verde on it, in tandem with the rocket this made the sandwich taste remarkably light and fresh. The little side salad was equally fresh and lovely. The chef obviously has an awareness of colour as the leafy green was complimented by accents of pink radish and pink onions- making the presentation as good as the sandwich. My friend had something on the menu called 'the Aussie' which consisted of a good piece of sour dough bread topped with halloumi, a fried egg, green leaves and a minty salsa. On the side was a small ramekin of beetroot humus- again the fabulous pink colour clashing delightfully with the green. Just delicious and well thought out food. The atmosphere is also great- smart but very relaxed and casual. Staff were excellent and attentive- but not at all intrusive (you know what I mean- no one staring at you eat, asking you constantly if everything is alright, and not clearing the table while you're still considering whether or not to eat the last bit on your friends plate). Clientele were a totally mixed bunch- all ages. Accommodating for young families. Prices are reasonable. Recommended!

Kith&kin has made the best breakfast I have had in the uk. Perfection on a plate is how I would describe it. The taste was so unique, well made and presented. Definitely going there again when in the area. If it wasn’t 5.5 hours drive away from me, I would be there every week

We took our 15 month old with us for some lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. There was plenty of space and there were high chairs available for our little one. We ordered the Reuben (salt beef hash) and the halloumi avocado burger which were both delicious. Our little girl had a cheese omelette which she really enjoyed. Overall, we had a great time in a comfortable atmosphere. We've been before and would definitely go again. Would recommend 👌

Great food, great atmosphere, great communication. When we arrived at about 9:30am it was already super busy, so I'd recommend booking. We were told about the wait, what our options were and decided to sit at the bar and eat there. There are a couple of vegan and vegetarian options and I had the avocado toast whilst my partner had the French toast. It's one of the best avocado toast I've had, I also asked for some crispy fried smoked tofu from the additional options section, which was also very tasty. The portions were huge, don't eat before you go if you're heading for breakfast and the coffee was tasty and strong. There were a wide range of vegan and ordinary cakes too. Parking was on the street outside and free for one hour. Disabled access would be possible but it's a bit tight. If you're going with a wheelchair user or pram, I'd book. The atmosphere was great with people looking like they really enjoyed working there. One of the team was harmonising with the songs playing (great voice by the way) and in the women's bathroom there were free sanitary products, reed diffusers and candles that matched the scent at the front of the store. It's not cheap with the portion sizes, the quality of the food (excellent), the atmosphere and the feeling of the place, it's well worth it. Great plates too. My only hope is that every dish is done as well as the ones we had, so that you don't go off my review and end up disappointed 🤣

Amazingly fresh food and the most delicious peach iced tea I have ever had. I chose crushed avocado on sourdough and added two extra poached eggs. Everything was cooked and presented to perfection. Staff were so lovely and upbeat too! I snuck a pic of the bathroom as I loved the design it was so aesthetically pleasing (they also had free sanitary products which just made my heart melt! More places should be this kind and considerate) can not wait to return and try everything on the menu as there was such a selection and everything sounded delicious! Good food for a good price and my PT will be equally as happy as I was
