The Duke of York never disappoints. As locals we often visit here purely because the food is amazing! (Highly recommend the steak and ale pie) The pub is cosy and has the feel if a typical old style english pub. It has great views over the harbour and also has a fab choice of drinks. I love gin the hubby loves single malt whisky and we are both well catered for
We just love this pub and have done for years ! Busy at times but worth the wait ! Crab sandwiches to die for !
Lovely couple who run the pub ! Great 👍
Whitby is my favourite place..and I have to say the Duke of York is my most favourite place to visit while in Whitby..lovely food great staff fantastic atmosphere.and a great view
Olde worldy pub with rooms and food, riverside and sea view. Watch the boats. Good menu, Lots of home made food until 9.30pm. Open fire, cozy atmosphere, pleasant staff.
Situated bottom of abbey steps along cobbled streets.
Had a great stay, room was excellent with harbour view, the food and drink were good and the staff were very pleasant, will stay again with out doubt.

Fantastic pub, meals to die for and the room we stayed in was BRILLIANT, staff can't do enough for you....can't wait to go back.
Love this pub in Whitby...really nice atmosphere and great views out over the harbour...staff are nice and efficient...can be very busy tho but worth going
As always the food at The Duke of York was very good it was just a pity that the barman was a bit surly and offhand. The range of spirits available is exceptional just a pity we were driving and couldn’t partake of a few of them. Of course, the next time we visit Whitby it will be a The Duke of York for a meal
Lovely food, had the steak, well cooked with lots of extras on the plate, absolutely gorgeous onion rings! Friendly staff, will definitely return
Love this pub.Friendly bar and kitchen staff.Good food and nice range of beers and ciders.Nice view of whitby harbour from the bar.
Always loved this pub, not been in for a while until yesterday when my friend and I went to Whitby for the day. The Duke of York gets better every time, lovely pub great atmosphere and the bottle of pinot was excellent and lovely helpful staff. I will definitely be back there very soon.
Great pub with great beers and an excellent view. Good food, worth a visit
Lovely cup of latte... and splendid view! Pleasant staff too! An excellent resting spot before we climbed the 199 steps!
Excellent place especially in the outside area when the sun is out little sun trap x friendly staff
Great pub in every sense. Beer is top draw. Good service. Fantastic view of the harbour. A must visit when in Whitby.
Popular pub situated near the steps up to Whitby Abbey good choice of food/No Sunday lunch but can get very busy at times. Family friendly and has accommodation , recently revamped.Great sea views from the bar area.
My family just spent two nights with our dogs over bank holiday weekend in the hotel. What an amazing transformation this pub/hotel has had. We stayed in rooms 5 and 7 which had beautiful views over Whitby harbour. It was lovely to wake up to the coastal atmosphere each morning, from the sound of waves to local wildlife.
The rooms are finished to a high standard, and decorated very tastefully. The staff were so accommodating, they allowed us to leave our luggage in a safe place before check in, and carried our bags up to our rooms for us.
We had a breakfast each morning which set us up well for a busy day exploring a beautiful town. Everything about our trip was easy- from checking in to paying… to rebooking! We enjoyed our stay so much, we booked on the spot for next Easter- thank you for a wonderful stay, we’ll see you again next year!
The Fletchers
Lovely, friendly pub with great food at a great price..
Nice to just sit and stare out of the window, across the harbour
Welcoming staff and a chilled out atmosphere
Recent overnight stay, the room was cosy but spotless. Bed was heavenly. Views of the Bay were amazing, and morning breakfast was plentiful. Would recommend.
Great food and drink, views of the harbour and dog friendly. Get in early if you want a good table.
One night stay in Whitby. Room was recently refurbished. Fantastic views of river and pier. Very nice cooked breakfast. will be back Staff very pleasant.
Stayed here for one night and had a lovely stay.
The room was cosy and bed was comfy only downside was water pressure in the shower but that did not spoil our stay.
Coffee machine and tea making facilities and the room was lovely and warm with such A good location.
I would highly recommend staying here or just popping in for a drink.
Beautiful views and very friendly staff been coming for years and really love the transformation.
Only had light bites but will be back next month so will definitely try other meals.
Well done to you all good team lead by a good Manager 👍.
Lovely pub and the chap behind the bar was very welcoming, loved the extra top on my husband's beer !! Will definitely be got back for food. The menu looked yummy
This is my favourite harbour side pub in Whitby. Refurbished since my last visit and was full of atmosphere. It is popular and there is no table booking but people politely wait on the side for free tables, what a polite society here... The menu is classic pub with a seaside feel. Meals were quick to arrive and tasty of course. The views are magnificent if you can blag a window seat, harbour and pier. And I'm pleased they are selling Yorkshire beer on the bar. I'll be back of course, but so will everyone else so either go early or be prepared to wait for a seat, the excellent bar staff will help you. Oh and I googled and used a shipping app, on the fishing boat names on the wall, interesting.
As a longtime visitor to the picturesque seaside town of Whitby, I've had the pleasure of discovering many of the local pubs and eateries. However, the Duke of York has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. This charming establishment, nestled in the heart of Whitby, offers an unbeatable combination of warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, and an exceptional selection of ales.
From the moment you step through the doors of the Duke of York, you're enveloped in a delightful atmosphere that harks back to the traditional British pub experience. The interior is adorned with rustic wooden beams, exposed stone walls, and cozy nooks that invite you to sink into a comfortable seat and while away the hours. The staff is exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share their recommendations and ensure that every visit is a memorable one.
The real star of the show, however, is the pub's impressive lineup of ales. With a rotating selection of local and regional brews, the Duke of York caters to the discerning palate of any beer enthusiast. Whether you're in the mood for a crisp, hoppy IPA or a rich, malty stout, the knowledgeable bartenders will guide you towards the perfect pint. I've sampled many of their offerings, and each one has been consistently well-crafted and bursting with flavor.
But the Duke of York is not just a place to enjoy a fine pint – the food menu is equally impressive. From the perfectly cooked fish and chips to the mouth-watering steak and ale pie, every plate is a testament to the skill of the chefs.
Overall, the Duke of York is a true gem in the heart of Whitby. Whether you're a local looking for a cozy spot to catch up with friends or a visitor seeking an authentic taste of Yorkshire hospitality, this pub is an absolute must-visit. With its charming ambiance, exceptional ales, and delectable cuisine, the Duke of York is the perfect place to while away an afternoon or evening in this gorgeous coastal town.

Nice little restaurant with charming interior design and lots of small seating areas. If you get a seat at the window you have an enchanting view of the harbor entrance and the opposite side of the pier. Smaller events and sports broadcasts are offered every day of the week. There is a small but perfectly adequate menu with something for every taste. All in all very nice and at just over £30 (food and drinks) for three people, reasonable prices. We would love to come back 😉.
We stayed here 2 weeks ago, the location is great, the room decent & the view unsurpassed, unfortunately, we were in Room 1, so paid for the View, but the people in Room 3 directly above must've had a dog & were tramping around all night, especially around 05.00 - 07.00, not something you need after a day/night out.
The sound insulation is non-existant, which is a massive shame because the room was not cheap.
On the plus side, the breakfast was decent.
Would I stay again, yes I would, would I pay a premium for Room 1, no I wouldn't!
Lovely views across the bay. We had lunch in April when Whitby was quieter than the peak season. Had a nice table with bay view. Food and drink was lovely and staff very helpful. Simple pub grub.
Absolutely fantastic ~ great views out of the window of the harbor.
Room was perfect, clean everything things you could ask for.
Breakfast was exceptionally.
Will definitely be booking again in the near future.
Also dog friendly
