This is in my mind without doubt the finest fish and chip restaurant in the country. We have tried many , but this is the best.
Lovely food. Try to leave room for pudding. Even the small portions fill the plate. Fish available with or without batter.
Childhood memories came flooding back. Introduced the kids to the joy that is the Magpie. They loved it! Food as fantastic as ever and only ten minutes to queue! We'll be back😉
Just returned home from my fourth visit to the area and the Magpie was a must, just as it has been on previous visits. Great food, generous portions. A must when in Whitby!
Excellent service from the staff. Food was out of this world ....and the surprise cake and getting the place to sing happy birthday was amazing
Absolutely loved the place.Stunning food and the staff were really helpful
Best place in Whitby to have fish and chips go there every time lovely staff x
My favourite food is chips. Today I tasted the best chips and scraps in my whole life. Will be coming back to Whitby 5 hr journey again.
Best fish, chips and mushy peas in the world , and the staff are fab, they are so busy, happy smiley people, can't wait ro go back again, thanks
Delicious! Have been searching for great fish and chips since I arrived from Australia and finally found them! I had hoped to have the skate, but was told that would be a 10 minute wait, so stomach rumbling I decided to get cod which was available straight away. The batter was on point, crispy and full of flavour, and NOT oily at all. The fish inside was excellent quality, flaky and white as snow. Chips were cooked to perfection too. This is a professional show.
Most people in Yorkshire, especially those who have visited Whitby will tell you that the best place to get fish and chips in Whitby, or even on the whole East Yorkshire coast is The Magpie. Long queues are associated with both its restaurant and takeaway and it has become somewhat of a Yorkshire coast landmark, it has afterall been serving fish and chips since 1937. With celebrity chef accolades (Rick Stein has sung its praises, remarking that I opened his eyes to how good a chip can really be) it's one of the most, if no the most, popular places to go in Whitby.
Went there with a few others. Heard this place was quite a well known spot but didn't quite know how to be too excited about fish and chips. I stand corrected. Lovely quick service and beautiful food. Huge piece of battered Haddock and chunky fries. There was nothing too ordinary about it. Highly recommended.Food 4/5, Service 3.5/5, Portion 4.5/5, Price 3.5/5
Our first excursion was in the seaside, port town of Whitby. It was such a lovely town, I was impressed by the fact there was a queue nearly outside every restaurants that served Fish & Chips and the town itself smells Fish & Chips apart for the top part on the hill near Whitby Abbey. Of course the longest queue was where my friend wanted to go: The Magpie Café, but he told me it was the one of the best Fish & Chips in the UK. We waited 40 minutes which wasn't that bad as it was pretty warm and sunny outside. I'm not sure I will have queue that much under the rain. The menu is mainly fish dishes (fried or grilled) but they also have vegetarian options, I laughed when I saw this option as it reminds me of Chris Pople tweet from the 16th April (see below), but well I guess restaurants especially in small town had to please everyone. However my friend and I are not vegetarian so we both ordered a regular cod and chips each and we shared a side of mushy peas as the waiters told us the regul
... it’s definitely a slice of Yorkshire that you shouldn’t miss.
It’s hard not to fall in love with the food being served at The Magpie Cafe, a North Yorkshire fish and chip institution. And, judging by the queues down their steps come rain or shine, it holds a special place in the hearts of many many others. This is no mean feat considering every other business in this goth-friendly seaside resort is a fish and chip shop. However, the Magpie doesn’t just serve incredible fish and chips. Kipper pate, local oak roasted salmon, seafood stew, grilled woof and lobster thermidor were just a couple of the dishes which conspired to distract me from the task in hand… There was nothing regular (neither size nor flavour) about my regular haddock and chips (£11.95). Every mouthful of fish was a joy – the perfectly flaky fillet enrobed by thin, crisp, grease-free and perfectly puffed up batter. Chips were also things of beauty - chunky, crisp, fluffy and ever so slightly meaty (that'll be the beef dripping they're fried in). They were a delight to dunk in a pot
This is good old simple fish and chips. The fish from here is definitely fresh and came with a batter that was non-greasy, crispy and light in flavour so that it doesn’t detract from the fish.
I have been looking forward to eating here for a while and everything was as I had expected. The fish is cooked in beef dripping and this added exceptional flavour. All food is made to order so everything is fresh. The bread and butter pudding for dessert was excellent too. The servers were excellent and attended to needs as required and answered any questions. Overall an excellent dining experience and one I would recommend to anyone. Pricing was good too especially with the quality of the food
Wanted to say thank you for such a beautiful lunch meal on Monday. Myself and my grandparents had a lovely lunch. The menu is plentiful with so many delicious options. We never felt rushed or hurried. Huge lovers of the Magpie and we will be back
No questions about this place winning; definitely worthy the awards they keep receiving…
Probably one of the Best cod, chips, mushy peas in North Yorkshire. The batter was light and flavourful, chips were beautifully cooked/fried (crispy edges), mushy peas were tasty as well! I tried grilled plaice and it was cooked to perfection, buttery fish and delicious with a fresh salad to go with it.
Very good ambience, excellent service even when we entered during closing time. Impeccable!
Location is also very convenient…
Returned to the place and I tried Lemon sole and will return again for the crab dishes, scampi and seafood chowder.
Seafood heaven for a seafood lover.. True to word, “always fresh, never frozen”
Returned a third time for crab bisque and crab&chips… AAAmazing! 🦀
Back again for grilled halibut and seafood pot… FRESH and BEST! Couldn’t be any better…
And again for grilled cod and hake with crispy fried whitebait, prawns in butter-garlic sauce
And another visit for lobster and grilled herbed hailbut
A BIG thank you to the whole team @Magpie for the fresh catch, delicious meals and wonderful service.
Probably the best fish restaurant in North Yorkshire. Fish and chips were freshly served and the batter was amazing. Great service with friendly staff.
Had a lovely to course set meal lots of choice and food was delicious. Staff could not have been more helpful. Any food being served at other tables looked nice .
We had been recommended to eat here by a friend who had eaten here around 15 years ago, so to be honest, we didn't think it would still be as good . But this restaurant exceeded our expectations, I personally never eat the batter around fish, but this batter was amazing, light & didn't seem fatty , more like tempura batter, the chips were just as good so I ate the lot !!!
My husband had skate , I had cod, both were amazing. Will definitely recommend to our friends & family. Staff were also friendly & nothing was too much even though they were rushed off of their feet.
Our family of four visited here after a recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming but not in your space. We came for fish and chips but the menu was varied and offered something for everyone including vegetarian. We had a large haddock, small cod and two children’s menus with curry sauce which was a little fruity for my personal taste but still nice.
The dinning room and bathroom was spotless with view of the harbour from 1st floor.
It is best to book as it was almost full by 1pm, would I go again yes.
Couldn't believe there was no queue when we arrived. If we had queued, it would have been well worth the wait. It was delicious! 😋
We did the 2 courses for £21
The mussels, calamari and fish and chips were gorgeous 😍
I drank the creamy sauce the mussels were in😂😂😂
Service was spot on
Special mention to the mushy peas. Best I've ever had in my life
One of the best fish&chips I have ever had! The fish was not salty and everyone can use as much salt or vinegar as they desire. If I go here next time, I will order fish and chips with 2x mushy peas, because they were so tasty and I would also add gravy.
Scrumptious! Second time visiting here and it always hits the spot. It is very popular which is understandable as it’s super flavourful! My only advice is do book before!
I ordered the samphire and shallots and the halloumi burger. Everything was fresh and flavourful. Those who I was with who eat fish said it was cooked to perfection.
Definitely visit when in Whitby as you won’t regret it!
Restaurant and restrooms are super cleanly.
Visited last Easter Sunday evening, we hadn't booked but a lovely warm welcome and seated straight away.
We ordered and drinks arrived quickly myself and hubby had starters and mains, prawn cocktail and fish bites 1st then scampi and huge cod for mains with extras.
Our waitress was attentive and genuinely lovely, giving informed information about dishes on the menu.
The cleanliness of venue was sparkling, toilets excellent, service 5 star.
Highly recommend visiting, ive told all my friends who were visiting whitby and posted photos on my social media to highlight this gem
Well done x
Stunning food! The Magpie was recomended by a friend of mine - and we are so glad we went (and that we booked as it was super busy!!). Service was amazing and the food phenomenal. So much choice. Def want to go back.
Passed the Magpie many times always a queue. Walked straight in today, still busy. Very enjoyable regular cod and chips and a pint of Whitby Heritage beer. Maybe a smaller portion next time.
We went to The Magpie Cafe on a recommendation and pre booked online in advance. We arrived early due to bad weather and the staff were able to seat us straight away, which was great. The restaurant is clean and welcoming. The waiting staff were brilliant and very knowledgeable about the food. Overall, the food was good. I had an issue with the fish and chips ( the batter was soggy and fish was over cooked) but the staff couldn't apologise more and rectified the situation for us. However, the portions are large and well priced for location. Would recommend the Magpie Cafe for anyone who loves fish or seafood and comfy portion size!
Went to this place for lunch. Had the scallops and black pudding and also the crab bisque for starters which were delicious, and I would highly recommend them. I think the starters were even nicer then mains. Then we had the hot seafood pot and fish and chips for main which were okay. The cider: Rekordling Mixed Berries was great.
A very delicious meal (Cod & chips). Fish was cooked lovely and batter was nice and crisp. Home made onion rings were tasty and all washed down with a bottle of nice pale ale. Atmosphere was busy but plenty of staff who are very attentive. Lots of smiles and friendly experience.
A real gem if you like seafood or even if you're with someone who loves seafood.
The focus here is the food, the setting isn't fancy or gimmicky and the menu, while extensive is without any unnecessary frills.
For a fish restaurant, the vegetarian options were excellent and equally well designed and executed.
The dishes are largely simply prepared from fresh ingredients and presented without fuss.
All the staff were genuine, warm and welcoming with a good knowledge of the fare on offer.
