A beautiful pub in a stunning setting with friendly staff. We have popped in for a drink after a walk and enjoyed their seafood platter and Mediterranean platter. We have also brought family members there for Sunday lunch. It is one of those rare country pubs (it seems nowadays) that allow to you just sit and have a drink. Even when they are busy, they seem able to accommodate you in one of their outside areas or many little rooms. I almost didn't want to write a review as I don't want to share!
Beautiful Inn located in the quaint village of Firle. Voted best place to live in Britain!!! The Ram also has 5 luxury bed and breakfast rooms, with people coming from miles around to eat top quality restaurant food.
The staff are helpful and will do anything to help you, and whilst it can be a bit manic at the bar the selection of local ales and Perry's is worth the wait.
There are also huge gardens and outside seating areas great for walkers, cyclists or sightseers.
And it's dog friendly!!! What more can you ask for??
I know I am a bit biased but the food really was on top form this weekend at the Ram ! Dinner on Saturday night , had the Roast cod with clams Savoy cabbage & bacon, and a lovely Sunday lamb roast - with fabulous side vegetables -spicy cabbage cauliflower cheese .. and a sharing plate to finish.
Was delicious and staff charming and attentive!
I cannot rate The Ram I’m highly enough after holding a surprise 50 th there yesterday
Jade & Charlotte in particular were outstanding staff & despite an accommodation problem put in a 5* performance
Great time !
Lovely pub! Traditional decor and great location. Then add good beer, good food and friendly staff.
We had a wonderful stay at the Ram, we took our friends as a Christmas Present, before they move to Australia. It was the perfect dose of English culture before they set off.
The staff are all bloody lovely, and looked after us very well. Our Dog Brian was welcomed with open arms and fitted right in.
The food I found was excellent, and a great portions, (I love my food!) and a great selection of wines. We dried the Smoked Vodka, which was a stunning!!!
We had a walk around the estate, and took in the beautiful scenery.
I think Hayley has managed to keep a traditional pub feel, without wiping any of the character of a classic pub that serves great food. With the addition of a few wonderful rooms for people to stay. It's bursting with personality. I love the way they interior has been designed, I feel like it's been like that for centuries.
If you want a sense of character and atmosphere, this is the place for you, it's not perfect, but where is? And that's what I love about it! And I think it's worth every penny!
Thank you Hayley and your staff, we had a BLAST!
Fabulous food, warm and friendly service and superb room and facilities. Extra bonus of morning appearance of Fifi and Humphrey the pub Jack Russells
I never normally write reviews but this place was so nice I had to. We came from a festival and after calling ahead we were greeted so warmly and the hospitality was amazing. Food was unbelievable and yeah just wanted to rate this place as high as possible xxx
Called into The Ram for Sunday lunch after a very windy and rather chilly yomp up on Firle Beacon. The service from the bar staff and the waiting staff was excellent They were very attentive and efficient despite the pub being pretty full. My wife and I had a delicious roast and both we and our two retrievers warmed ourselves at a table by the log fire. We will return with others.
Lovely young service staff, not professionals, but eager to please. Delicious food and local beers. A special place to eat after a walk up the Firle
As part of a planned day trip to the Charleston Farm House we stopped at the Ram Inn with a local friend of ours and enjoyed a nice summer lunch outside. Food was well prepared, fresh and tasty. We had the chicken supreme (which can be tricky to prepare well) along with a bottle of rose and followed by dessert - we had a very pleasant experience. A nice restaurant if you are looking for a picturesque location in Sussex with a relaxed atmosphere - can be busy so best to book ahead.
What a beautiful pub this is! All Georgian decor, an absolutely stunning outside seating area. The staff were friendly, accommodating and frequently checked on us.
The food! Phenomenal! The menus have the days date on which suggests all local and fresh produce is used. I had the beef bourguignon with mash potato and spicy red cabbage. The best I have ever had. Then to follow I had the dark chocolate, miso and peanut butter brownie which was very naughty indeed! Will definitely be returning to have a better look at the interior of the pub as we sat outside the entire time as it was a stunning day.
Big thanks to all at the Ram!
We were a bit sceptical about visiting after reading the reviews recently but all I can say is ignore them. We did have to return the lamb as is was rather fatty and overcooked but they quickly corrected this and it was delicious. 100% would return again. Dog friendly also. *We didn't stay at the hotel/rooms
Menu wasn't as extensive as it used to be bit that's true of many places since the pandemic. The food is always good and the service was excellent. It was mid to late afternoon when we visited and therefore quiet, although there were lots of people at the outside seating area in front of the Inn, possibly because it was sunny there. I can't be in the sun at present and it wasn't warm enough to sit put in the shaded areas.
This is a favourite place to eat even though we don't eat there often.
Love this pub. Always great service and lovely local brewed beers on tap (Burning Sky, 360)
Great menu and delicious food too.
The village of Firle is beautiful nestled within the South Downs. Great for a day trip or a stop off while walking the Downs.
Visited on Sat, 1 July, midway through a 10-mile circular walk.
Overall, it worked out, but there were some points where it could have been an awful experience.
We'd booked, four people for 2pm outside. The table indicated for us was for two people. Luckily, it was accommodated as there aren't many other options in Firle.
The service was...uneven, to be generous. I think it was well-intentioned and again, mostly worked out. It was like be served by golden retrievers; everyone was trying hard and very nice, but just not getting it right. A second round of drinks took a third reminder to receive them. They'd forgotten to put through a starter (a second, very nice, shell-on prawns). Somewhere along the line, a printer somewhere became unplugged, holding up many orders and delaying everything further. Carafes of water (oddly small) arrived, but no water glasses.
I don't know if it was the food or that we had five miles under our belt, but either way, we certainly cleared our plates. The shell-on prawns were small but delicious and very plentiful. Steak, fish, chicken and a plowman's were all really well-received. On reflection, what was coming out of the kitchen was straightforward and done well. If only it and the bar and the serving staff could link up better.
I really like hanging out at this pub. I also really like the fact that they light up candles inside the pub which gives a very cozy atmosphere. I've been coming here a few times aready. Service is good, I'm always asked if I am okay and if I need anything else, just very lovely people
We had one experience here that wasn't so good, but the team/management have obviously sorted it out because on Saturday they were absolutely brilliant. I arrived a few minutes before they stopped serving breakfast, yet nothing was a problem, food was perfect and staff were very welcoming. Great effort
Thanks to the Ram for a nice outdoors roast lunch. One terrific member of staff on service but the rest l etting her down somewhat. Food great when it arrived.
On our rare respite break as family carers after visiting a National Trust property in Kent, this delicious meal at the Ram in the village gem that is Firle was a great way to finish the day. Something to please both of us, sea bream for OH and melt in the mouth local lamb pour moi! A Burning Sky offering Plateau Pale Ale 3.5% from the brewery round the corner (yes literally) washed it down effortlessly. We finished with a sharing dessert plate and just about managed to keep to our own sides.
Friendly attentive service was the finishing touch. Merci bien a tous. Bonne continuation et a bientot👨🍳!!
