Always a warm welcome here at The Red Lion at Chalton deep in the Hampshire countryside. The thatched pub/restaurant has stunning un-interupted views looking out over the facing valley set in the the 'twee' hamlet of Chalton. With a spacious well laid out car park and easy access,a beer garden is laid out on 2 levels with a well laid out bar and restaurant and cute little snug to suit all tastes. The food menu is varied, well priced and the service from the staff does accompany it's excellant content and quality of meals. Add to that a well stocked bar of real ales and fine wine and you've got the perfect location to enjoy one of their sumptuous traditional roasts on a Sunday lunchtime or while away the the cares of the world in the garden with a beer on a Summer's evening.
Absolutely cracking place great food and brilliant staff would highly recommend 👍
Really excellent pub in a glorious location. Had fantastic weather too so sat on the deck. The menu was varied without being over done. Too many dishes means too much is prepared in advance so beware. Not the case here. Specials boards and choice for veggies and vegans? Service was good, beer (and cider) was good. Service at the tiny bar was friendly and efficient. Had a nice time.
We ate here last night, spur of the moment decision. It was easy to book online and when we arrived we were given a friendly welcome.. I've had a beer in the garden before (stunning views) but the inside was just as nice, cosy with lots of individual touches so although it's a fullers pub it has a very local pub feel to it. We had a range of food from the standard and specials menu and it was all delicious but special mention for the baked garlic mushroom which a taste sensation, as you can see from the photo I was half way through eating before I thought to take a pic! Great service, with really friendly staff. Loved it.
My husband and I came here for the 1st time tonight and it did not disappoint! We enjoyed the food so much, and the service from the young girl was great! Lovely pub and we will be coming again very soon
Tracy gave us a wonderful tour of the old part of the pub. Dinner was delicious. It was a wonderful evening! Thank you!
Another good pub on a tremendous scenic walk. We never ate here. Just a couple of pints and a bag of crisps so I can't comment on the food. Looked OK though.
Beer was in top condition.
Nice garden with views...see pic
Really nice authentic pub in the south downs. It's a 5 min drive off the A3, so it's not too busy but easily accessible. There are loads of picnic tables in the garden with fantastic views across the hills. The food is amazing, I recommend the steak pie! The staff were very friendly and engaging. There are lots of nice touches like dog stations with treats, blankets, dog brushes, etc.
Popped in for a late Sunday Lunch. It was a nice day so weren't expecting any availability. However, we got a wonderful seat in a covered seating area in the garden with outstanding views over the South Downs.
The pub was nearing the end of the lunch rush but still packed. Regardless, we received our Roast Beef lunches within 10mins of ordering and it was truly excellent. Good sized portion and every element executed to perfection. Beef was tender and full of flavour. Perfect crispy/fluffy roast potatoes, great selection or veg and even a bonus gravy jug without asking.
Worth going out of your way for if you want to eat a delicious Sunday lunch in a beautiful location at competitive prices.
Excellent! Our party of 6 were made welcome and quickly shown to a table. After a short time it was decided that the table was quite restricted and we asked to move to another. This was done without question and we soon placed our orders. Three ordered Fish pie which was declared delicious. One had Lasagne which he said was very good. One had Goat's cheese pie and chips in which she was rather disappointed. My Chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and veg was delicious. Service was excellent and the drinks were good. All in all a very enjoyable lunch.
Very welcoming and great service. We visited with our dog who was welcomed. We had food and drinks, great choice and was really good. Plenty of parking round the back and loads of room inside
Great pub located in the countryside. Not a huge selection of different beers but the beers available are decent. Quality of food was very good and portions were decent but food was a little pricey. The beer garden is big with plenty of seating which is broken into 3 areas, dogs are welcome and bowls and treats are available.
We really enjoyed our meal here. The staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. Their waitress that Sunday was particularly helpful and had the right amount of personality and professionalism that is welcome in a pub- it made us feel very comfortable and at ease.
It is located in a beautiful location and they have made an effort to have an aesthetic which reflects that inside; it has a lot of character.
We really enjoyed our meals. And would definitely like to return. My only minor disappointment was that the ice cream is £2.50 per scoop and it was a very small scoop. That said it was delicious Laverstock farm bulls milk ice cream. We had the salted caramel and chocolate and would definitely recommend the salted caramel.
The toilets were impeccably clean. Parking was easy and plentiful. It was easy to phone and book a table, again staff were efficient and had a good telephone manner.
Stumbled across this lovely country pub on a bit of a hike, we had got lost several times and sought sanctuary here in the beautiful garden with gorgeous views.
I'd actually hurt my foot and our car was another four miles, after already having walked 15.5....
When we got our refreshments the fabulous server, Tracey Light, listened to our sorry tale and offered us a lift back to our car in her break - I could've wept at her kindness, completely above and beyond as far as customer service goes!
We will definitely be back to tuck into one of their tasty looking roasts, Tracey said they were delicious and I'm inclined to believe her!
Thank you for your warm friendly welcome and especially to Tracey - not all heroes wear capes! ❤️
6 of us had lunch at the Red Lion today, 5 different dishes. Everyone thought their food was great. I chose the chalk stream trout from the specials board. It was on really smooth and tasty mashed potato with tomatoes, peppers, capers, spinach and the truly delicious sauce was outstanding. If I could recreate it at home, I would!
Service was efficient, discreet and friendly.
We arrived at 12, so it was quiet to begin with, but it soon filled up with people of all ages.
A super lunch and very reasonable price for what we received.
A lovely country pub nestled in the heart of East Hampshire… We had been invited to a pre Christmas meal at this local(ish) pub. The food was of a very high standard, plus the pub itself was very warm and inviting (the open fire helped on a cold December night). We had been asked to preorder our food, as we had a group of over 10, but everyone seemed to enjoy their food, no matter the choice. I will be sure to come back and sample their non seasonal menu on another occasion.
First time visiting and was certainly not disappointed! The staff are lovely, friendly, and nothing is too much bother. The pub itself is beyond stunning, complete with a 2 section garden - 1 smoking & 1 non smoking. Board games available to play if wanted; And the food was too good! I ordered the fish and chips, it was so big - I could've used it as a surf board 🥴
We only had drinks this time, but the food is excellent.
A hugely atmospheric and historic pub. Have eaten here a number of times, and the food and service is always tip-top. Beautiful views of the South Downs from the pub garden too. Highly recommended for a proper "country pub" experience!
Their prawn and crayfish sandwich is very good. The service from their staff was prompt, friendly and attentive. The pub building is beautiful and sits in a stunning location within the Southdowns National Park.
The pub has a decent size carpark and a pleasant outdoor seating area.
We didn't have food, but wished we had time too as it looked fabulous. We stopped on the off chance as we were in the area. We received a warm welcome and was really well looked after. Would highly recommend a visit.
