Just came back from India and I must admit this was some of the best Indian food I've had. It's a long way from the after pub closing vindaloo curry joints!
It was our second visit for a pre-rugby meal and every bit as good as the first. Despite a packed house, with everyone eating at the same time, the service was good and the food was excellent! Will definitely be going again!
Exquisite food every time. The Railway Chicken is to die for, and the king prawn starter on the specials menu is fantastic
First class and very good value , hopefully will get the opportunity to visit again sometime
Tasty food ,nice restaurant & atmosphere, good service
AMAZING! Is the apt word to describe the style, comfort and hospitality at Atithi Indian Cuisine
,I would like to give this restaurant 5 stars and this is the best Indian restaurant in the area...:)
First time food was great tasty and spicy recommend the lamb chops served fresh staff very helpful was busy and still git served drinks fast....only thing is when waiting in the waiting area you cannot get a drink apart from that great their was six of us and no one had a bad word ok i would have liked some fruit after all that food desserts were plentiful but too sweet for me
Truly one of the best Indian food we've tasted in London! The menu is short and sweet; ergo - all dishes are excellent quality. We had the pleasure of meeting chef Negi after dinner and had a nice conversation as well. If you're around Twickenham and are looking for a good curry house, look this up! P. S - Dont miss the mustard chicken tikka :-)
If you're looking for tasty indian food you should look no further. The restaurant is very welcoming. The restaurant looks clean and the interior looks really nice.
If you're looking for a typical curry house for a session meal before the rugby, you might be in for a surprise. You wouldn't have guessed that Indian food could be like this, don't believe me? just watch. There is a level of sophistication in the food that makes Atithi Restaurant one of the best dining restaurants for a popular cuisine this side of London.
I'm not going to make any excuses for those of you who find finer dining uncomfortable, when the food is this good you are going to have to just darn well put up with it.
I have been to Atithi too many times to count, and every time I have put my blogging aside because I have been too impatient, wanting to actually enjoy my meal without having to document my experience. Yes, this has been an oversight on my part, but it is a testament to how good the food is here.
It is dark inside, so you'll find yourself in quite an intimate environment. Be sure to be asked to be seated further back inside the restaurant when you go, it can be a little drafty near the front in the winter months. Forget about the usual curry houses down Church Street and head one street back toward the station on York Street, opposite The Bear pub and you'll find Atithi.
When presented with the menu, steer away from the samosa's, although they are nice you'll be doing yourself a disfavour by not ordering the potato cake or the butterfly king prawns as a starter. The Paneer is also a favourite of mine.
There's a particularly interesting mains dish Goan Prawn curry with coconut and poppy seeds that is very tasty indeed. I for the most party enjoy the Galafi Handi, spring lamb cooked with onion, tomato and spices. You maybe be wondering how this compares to another Indian restaurant Tangawizi in East Twickenham. They are more flashy (which I like) and the food is also good there, however, I got fed up with being rushed through service. The are very much into 'turning their tables', and to me, that is not dining. Having staff hovering around your table waiting for you to finish is pushing the envelope to far and this is what Tangiwizi do.
So I love to go to Atithi whenever I need a good curry, we are also favourite of their delivery service, which is great for a night in and a treat every now and again. I understand that they maybe a little more on the wallet but if you really want to experience high quality Indian cuisine then its definitely a go.
See my blog:
Executive chef and co-owner Chef Krishnapal Negi originally trained in the Oberoi hotel group in India, in Mumbai amongst others. He moved to the UK as head chef of Yatra, a rather unusual Indian night club and restaurant that I used to frequent (for the excellent food rather than because of any great love of bhangra music). He moved to become head chef of Tangawizi and I lost touch with where he had moved to after that. It seems that he opened Swagat in Richmond, and in December 2011 then opened Atithi in Twickenham. He performs an overseeing role at these two kitchens rather than being hands-on at the stoves full time at either one of them.
Atithi means “guest” and certainly we were made welcome by the staff on this quiet Sunday evening. The high street premises are quite smartly decorated, the menu a mix of north Indian staple dishes and a few more adventurous options. There was a short wine list with no vintages displayed, starting at £13.95, with wines such as Tooma River Chardonnay at £17.95 for a wine that retails at about £7.
Aloo tikki chat was prettily presented, the central spiced potato cake on a bed of tender chickpeas with tamarind chutney, sweet yoghurt decorated with sev. The texture was fine and the chickpeas tender but for me the tamarind chutney needed to be a lot more prevalent, the overall effect a little more bland than ideal. Still, this was a very pleasant dish (13/20). Amritsar fish was less attractively laid out, looking a little like an Indian version of fish fingers when displayed. This comprised strips of tilapia that had been dipped in gram flour, ginger and carom seeds before being fried. The fish was cooked properly and the ginger flavour came through well (13/20).
Murgh malai tikka was good, perhaps just a fraction drier than ideal, but the marinade having nicely tenderised the meat (13/20). Prawn naryali had large prawns that had been marinated with coconut and spices before being cooked in the oven. These were cooked through well and had good flavour (13/20). Aloo gobi worked well, the potato and cauliflower having retained their texture rather than being soggy, as so often happens with this dish (13/20). Dhal makhani was particularly good, the texture in no way watery and having an enjoyable smokiness (14/20). Naan bread was pleasant (13/20) but I particularly enjoyed kulcha, which had a pleasing chilli kick from its stuffing (14/20).
Gulab jaman was made from scratch and was enjoyable rich, not too sickly sweet (13/20). Kulfi was bought in from Royal, a well-known caterer, and as ever in such circumstances was decent but did not compare well to a high quality kulfi that is made from scratch. The bill came to £40 a head including drinks (beer and mineral water). Service was attentive and efficient. Overall, although I slightly prefer its older sister Swagat, Atithi is nonetheless a very good Indian restaurant, vastly better than the high street norm.
Had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant. Food here is top tier and highly recommend those who are looking for authentic Indian cuisine. This is a brilliant find in Twickenham and I look forward to going back. Once again highly recommend those looking to try some authentic Indian food!
Delicious food!
Perfect for Indian cuisine.
We ordered hara bhara kebab- it was the best starter I had in York ever. In main we ordered dal makhni, dal tarka, paneer butter masala with onion kulcha, tandoori roti and jeera rice.
My mother loved the onion kulcha a lot.
Honestly, everything was so delicious and my family was so happy. Staff was very polite and professional. I really liked the interior and atmosphere.
Gulabjamun was super soft and fresh.
I'd definitely recommend it for whoever wants to have a delicious Indian meal in York.
Amazing view, nice atmosphere and delicious food.
We went to Atithi for a quick bite before an international rugby match. The food was excellent the service was fast and efficient and friendly. The atmosphere very good, all of the patrons were going to the match. My only grip is the portions were a little on the small side.
One of the best restaurants anywhere. The food is outstanding. The staff are courteous and warm and they clearly live the food they serve. Nice ambience, warm, calming decor. Brilliant.
Just superb. Great food and service, it was a bit of a quiet night in there but this is one of the best cities I've had in Twickenham. Highly, highly recommended
Atithi is an absolute gem in the area. The staff are lovely, the food incredibly tasty and well presented. Nothing in the menu will disappoint - dive in!
I went to this restaurant based on the pictures of the food and it really was presented as well as you can see in my photo. Decor is average with interesting pictures on the walls. Staff were friendly and the food did taste very good. Knocked off one star as I like my chicken more well cooked otherwise I enjoyed the food.
I think this is the best Indian restaurant in Twickenham. The food is simply delicious and very authentic.
The food was very tasty, the workers were very helpful and customer friendly. Would definitely recommend trying it.👍
Great food and service. So good we went back the following night. Very accommodating for friend who is gluten free.
A gem of a place. I’ve done takeout at least a dozen times and dined in too. The food is some of the absolute best Indian food in London. While dining in, we were a group of 6 and ordered a variety of dishes - not one was off the mark. Very economical and great service. Would highly recommend and keep going again.
One of my favourite places in London for Indian food. Discovered this gem of a place 5 years ago by accident and we keep going there almost every month, even though we have now moved 6-7 miles away. Great quality food, friendly service and quite economical - a must visit if you are around Twickenham
Delicious food - you can tell each dish is prepared individually rather than the common base sauce Indian you find in a lot of places. Good portions at good prices. Our go-to Indian in Twickenham.
This is actually a "proper Indian". I'm no professional but I've visited India 5 times in the last 5 years and can honestly say the dishes are prepared to a different standard than many many places in the UK. The curries taste like they've actually been prepared specifically and not the (base curry slop then add custom spices depending on the variety), so the result is an exquisite taste. Highly recommend, we love the gilafi handi and the chicken methiwala but I'm sure many other gem dishes exist
A very Authentic and delicious Indian food served here. Will definitely come back again!
First time customers. Got a delivery and e joyed it greatly. Very happy to recommend it. They will now be our go to for Indian food whilst they keep that standard up.
I had forgotten how wonderful the food is here. I used to visit often before Covid lockdown but this was my first visit for nearly 2 years. Shame on me! The crispy okra was as yummy as it always has been as was the onion bhaji. I would highly recommend the Chicken Chetinand which was first class. The service was warm and friendly and the bill was reasonable for the feast we enjoyed. I will definitely be returning and won't leave it for 2 years!
Went with a large group and we were very well looked after by friendly staff and the food was absolutely delicious. Best curry I’ve had in the Twickenham area.
This is a lovely restaurant with extremely friendly staff and the food is simply fantastic. This was my first visit here but will definitely make this a regularly hotspot for me. Would highly recommend.
