It's difficult to get excited about a new "Fish and Chip" shop in Torquay (it can feel like getting excited at the prospect of an extra five land trains being added just to properly screw up traffic flow!) but there are a few reasons First Plaice should warrant your attention and a visit:
- They do good chips. If you screw this one up, you have no hope. Fortunately, their chips remain very good and entirely un-screwed. In every sense of the word. Presumably.
- They actually make a good pizza. I've had "pizzas" from other chippys that were best described as vaguely tomato-flavoured sauce covered in a rubbery cheese-style substance, probably made from cat milk, on the largest and worst digestive biscuit you can imagine. These are the opposite of that. Great sauce, tasty cheese, generous toppings, on an actual "in-house" made, thin base.
As pizza is inarguably the food of the Immortals, this should be reason enough.
Need more? Fine.
- The staff are lovely, friendly and not fazed when some dipstick comes in with his chest all puffed out, thinking he can go wildly off menu by asking for extras in his burger or something different on his pizza just because he's written a Facebook review. Um... there was a guy I know who did that. Not me. Honest...
- They source a huge amount of their meat products from the local butcher's just a few doors down. Which is probably Torquay's best butcher's shop, therefore their burgers, chicken, etc. are all really properly tasty. They cook them right as well. "Respect the meat" could be their mantra but it'd probably get deliberately misconstrued by some filthy-minded urchin types.
- They care. Fine, yes, I know I sound like a greeting card now, but they don't make Thank You cards for chip shops, I looked, and was politely asked to leave Clinton's cards. So there.
The staff want to make the best food they can, so they use the best food they can find and are always trying to improve the menu. You'd think that was a pretty simple equation, wouldn't you? Yes, McDonald's, I'm looking at you.
- The prices are fair. For what you get, First Plaice is cheap. But I'm not going to wax lyrical on this point too much in case they jack up the cost now I'm addicted.
It's just a really good, local business, working with other local businesses and they deserve your trade.
Tell them I sent you. It won't mean a thing to them but I have a rampant ego and I like to think people are talking about me at all times.
Best chip shop in a long time in Torquay. The Staff are fantastic. The food is amazing good price for what you get. I would highly recommend it. Brilliant job your doing.
I'm somewhat bias because I'm mum, however I know good food when I taste it! Really enjoyed your fish and chips, had a taste of pizza and of your butchers sausage too which were delicious. Definately recommend a visit.

Well managed, friendly staff and nice food ... Best fast food outlet I've tried in Torquay and I'm fussy lol... Recommended
Great people, fab selection and delicious food. The kebab wraps are fantastic! The burgers are sourced from the nearby butchers and taste amazing. An all-round gem.
Lovely friendly staff and the food was great. Will definitely be going again xx
Just had a jumbo battered sausage, chips and curry sauce from you guys and it was bloody delicious, I will 100% be back!
Freshly cooked and using local suppliers.
What more can you ask for?
Stumbled across this takeaway and saw they sold kebabs in traditional Polish bread so decided to buy 2 kebabs with spaghetti and a portion of chips. Wow it was delicious! Tasted just like the ones I've eaten in Poland. Highly recommended!. The chips wasn't that nice but no complaints from us.
dziękuję
Best takeaway in the bay. Been using them regularly since they opened as everything is cooked fresh and, if you ask nicely, they will do it how you like. The cheesy chips are a winner as they dont just slap a little cheese on dry hard chips like others near them.
Take note other fish & chip shops .. this takeaway is the best I've reviewed in the country for many years.
Really love this place, the people are friendly, clean shop, food is really good everytime. The spicy chicken burger is better than a well known brand of fried chicken, with fresh tasty salad and the chips are really good and generous portions. Highly recommended if your local or staying in the hotels along Belgrave Road. Going to try the kebab next time looking at other reviews. 😋
Very nice place with lovely owners, big portions, nothing to complain about.i
Best kebab around, big&fresh. I love places with good tasting food, Fishers is definitely one of them. Fully recommend.
