My wife and I decided on a visit at the last moment one morning, and we probably did not do enough research on it, because when we arrived we didn't quite believe how much there was to see! It was absolutely amazing! We started off by visiting the studio where many of Winston Churchill's original artwork is displayed, but even the scenery on walking to it was breathtaking, with ponds and lakes and views miles into the distance. The walled garden was fascinating, and we sat above it for a while to appreciate the vista! The really huge, old trees kept me focused on how old the whole place must have been, and the walk back to the main house was equally worth the time. As for the house and contents, well, just incredible is about the best of describing it. It was a great day out, and just how good it was proved to be a topic for conversation on the way home.
Without a doubt one of my favourite National Trust visits. Yes, it's a beautiful place, stunning views and obviously the home of Winston Churchill, but I found the guides here outstanding.
Incredibly passionate and informative, they were incredibly engaging and made the house come to life.
Grounds not as extensive as if imagined. Nice woodland walk though as well as house and other points of interest. Two cafes but further one may be seasonal as it was closed. Main cafe v busy but staff coped well. Gardens looking great (Oct) but lake has a lot of high fencing and around it atm.

Absolutely fantastic house, gardens and ground of Winston Churchill. You can make a day trip to this national trust property. We went a few years back but it was too late to visit the house. Car parking is free for the member, and you just need to scan your membership card to get a ticket, otherwise is £4 for the whole day by cash/ coins. You can also get the parking ticket at the ticket office paying by car. There is cafe, toilets, plants sales at the entrance of the property. You then can get map and free audio guides. You will be giving a timed tickets to go to see inside of house.
If the weather is good, you can bring some picnic and a blanket to have next to the pond near the rose garden and the house.
The house is well worth visit. You go in from the front of the house and show your tickets. Very nice pictures, uniforms and collections of the arts. ..
You can then go to the studio to see some of Churchill’s paintings.
Remember to see the garden and go for a walk in the woodland. There are a couple of play areas and the tree house in route.
We had a enjoyable day here. Recommended for all.
Lovely day out. Gardens are so beautiful. Best take a picnic and enjoy the sounds, smells and views.
The house itself is very interesting with a museum all about the great man himself.
Give yourself at least 3 hours

Amazing experience learning about Churchill's residence. Gorgeous house and grounds. Walking paths all over. Beautiful gardens and ponds with black swans. Playgrounds for kids. Studio showing his artwork on the walls. Public toilets. Lots of parking. Cute gift shop and book store. Great place to take photos inside and outside. Kids all over enjoying the grass to run and play. Loved this experience as a visitor from the USA. Thank you to the volunteers who taught us so much!
I visited this charming house last week (July 23') with my 3 month old in a sling. The house and gardens are beautiful! Great cafes - always a must. Thank you to the friendly and knowledgeable staff for their help calling the bus to take me and the buggy back to the car park!
Only a few car parking spaces available by noon. Timed ticket for house entry was a good idea and the volunteers were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We did a guided tour of the gardens and the studio - a helpful start before visiting the house. Big queue in cafe but quick to serve. The volunteers were brilliant!
Had a great time at Chartwell yesterday! There is plenty of parking space available and good cafe and toilet facilities. The grounds are vast and excellent for families or dog walkers. The house itself is extremely interesting and full of information about Churchill and his time here, his studio is very interesting as well. You can get amazing views of the county from his garden as well. Would highly recommend and will very likely visit again.
The grounds were so pretty , with a long walk too. There were a few steep inclines but nothing much. Food was great the shop included the usual national trust things (did include a lot of churchill books and biography's). Had a few play parks dotted around and was a great day out on a rainy day.
National Trust - Chartwell (in Kent, England) is an exceptional destination that seamlessly blends history and natural beauty. The elegant estate offers a captivating glimpse into the life of Winston Churchill, with its well-preserved rooms and extensive collection of personal artifacts. The sprawling gardens and picturesque landscapes provide a serene backdrop for leisurely strolls. Visitors can also enjoy informative tours and exhibitions that shed light on Churchill's legacy and his impact on history. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Chartwell's charm and historical significance make it a must-visit location.
You have access to a very nice restaurant, shopping and second-hand books.
100% you should make time to visit Chartwell. Stunning house with beautiful gardens. If you can't do the stairs inside the house like my mum they have a computerised virtual tour you can sit and watch.
Excellent cafe with gluten-free options as well.
An NT property well worth the visit. Walking in the steps (literally) of the late great Winston Churchill was amazing and the property the house is on is HUGE. Although there are some paved areas, some of them are steep or sloped in areas. There are steps towards the house, steps in part of the walled garden and the house is on three floors. There was only one disabled toilet by the visitor centre, didn’t see any others. Visitors to the house are asked to put their back packs on to their front to avoid accidentally knocking anything. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly and there was so much to see, from his personal life to his military service and has political career. There is a wheelchair lift reserved only for those unable to manage stairs. The gardens alone are well worth the visit although again, not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Both house and garden were delightful and, naturally, very interesting since Winston Churchill's life was varied, fascinating and hugely influential. The café was efficient, very important since I believe this is the most popular National Trust property in the country. Visits to the house are timed to ensure that the house doesn't get too crowded but, even so, we didn't have to queue to get into the house.
A great day out and definitely worth it especially if you have a national trust membership. The house is great and there are a number of exhibits kept inside the house . I particularly liked the kitchen . In the garden there’s a rose garden with many varieties of roses . There are a couple of small ponds with fish in it . There’s acres of woodland to explore on a not so hot days and much more …
A great place to visit whether you are interested in political history, the war or just want to visit a beautiful house with stunning grounds. Well worth the visit.
As per usual, the volunteers were amazing. They really know their stuff and very willing to share 😃
Fantastic gardens with flowers, fruits and veggies. The Churchill's house is full of history and nicely maintained. A bit pricy so maybe worth having a membership
Having memories of Sir Winston from my youth, and having queued through the night for his lying in state, it was time to visit his country home.
Many areas of the house are closed to the public, so it wasn't easy to visualise a family with four lively children living there. The sitting room and dining room are beautiful and Sir Winston's study too. Certainly there was a lot of information available, and probably a second visit would be beneficial.
Beautiful gardens & well kept house.
Frustrating that the main cafe is outside of the house and gardens and there was just a smaller one inside the grounds.
Not the best location if you’re bringing a buggy and definitely would struggle with a wheelchair. Lots of lovely outdoor space, great for a picnic with the family.
My biggest gripe was the amount of wasps! You want to sit outside and enjoy the views and the weather but you’re just attacked by wasps, there is clearly a problem here and it really needs to be addressed as it does a put a downer on the day.
