We turned up as a family of four for Sunday Lunch and despite being fully booked, the staff managed to find a way of accommodating us. All staff were very friendly and attentive throughout. The food was excellent; good quality produce;portion sizes were good and the kids menu was extensive enough to satisfy a 6 year old and a 3 year old! All in all, a very pleasant experience and I would thoroughly recommend but you’ll probably need to book on a Sunday lunchtime.
Just had a works christmas meal here and the food was just like you would have cooked and enjoyed at home and the service was lovely. Great to have a local pub that has a separate comprehensive gluten free menu . Thank you
Another of many returning visits to this little gem just outside Swindon.. the food and atmosphere never fail. Friendly, efficient staff and always service with a smile even on a Sunday when they're really busy. We never booked today, just turned up, no issue at all. I'll keep coming back - the wild mushroom, spinach and brie on brioche is epic!
Booked for my birthday this evening for myself and 15 members of my family!
Friendly staff
Great service!
Food was totally DELISH!!!!
Highly recommend a visit.
Thank you so much to everyone at The Plough on the Hill for making my birthday meal so lovely.
Stopped in on the off chance and didn't know what to expect. The inside is a lovely warm environment and we were seen to straight away. The food was incredible - we both had fish and chips which was without doubt the best we have ever had. It would have been perfect if it came with mushy peas instead of normal peas.
The staff were lovely and if we are ever in the area again we will definitely come here!
Lovely treat for breakfast today! Full English, all very fresh and tasty and no grease at all, presented well in welcoming surroundings. Certainly recommend this as somewhere different for a great cooked breakfast.
Great lunch here today . Excellent food. Today we had pork belly for mains, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Just a short drive off M4. Well worth a visit. Varied menu in lovely surrounds.
The food was more like restaraunt food not pub food . Reasonably priced full off flavour . I had the minted pea , asparagus and broad bean risotto which was amazing . The staff or owners (not sure which) were supper friendly and very polite . Deff going back . 👍🏻
I had my wedding reception here on Friday (26/01). All I can say is amazing. Food was sublime and went down a treat with all the guests. I can highly recommend this venue for wedding parties or any other party. Staff were a great laugh as well.
Excellent food and service. ..Trio of Lamb to die for...plus the best Rhubarb gin and rose lemonade drinks just delicious
A lovely place to meet for family from Swindon, the East and the West. Friendly, helpful staff and a good variety of delicious food.
I worked out I actually hadn’t been to the Plough since Swindon Town beat Leicester in the 1993 play offs and I watched all the celebrating cars coming off the M4 anyway, I shouldn’t have left it so long as this evening my family and I had the most gorgeous roast dinner. I am very fussy about my roasts and I can honestly say this was one of the best I’ve had. Beautiful meat, fresh veg, gorgeous roast potatoes and really tasty gravy. Will definitely be back and won’t be leaving it so long next time
Great atmosphere in this pub. We I didn't have a booking for Friday night, but I still got a table. Great tasty food, speedy service, and reasonable prices. Strawberry parfait was just heavenly tasty.
Lovely interior and dog friendly 😀 👍
We rocked up without reservations on Sunday, late afternoon. We were greeted and the host checked the reservation list to see if there were any gaps that we could possibly fit into. No luck, however, we were told that if there was room outside on the patio we could take our chances, given the rainy weather.
There was an empty table which we gratefully occupied.
Food and drinks were ordered at the bar. We enjoyed zero alcohol lager and a beer while we waited for our food: vegan burger and a regular roast dinner.
The food came out surprisingly quickly, given how busy they were. Generous portions and delicious.
The staff were friendly and courteous and tables that emptied were cleared quickly.
It was a very pleasant experience. Next time we will plan our visit and make sure we have reservations.
Excellent from start to finish it was our sons birthday 🎂 🥳 and it was his choice... WOTTA CALL.... the food was amazing (and I am an ex chef) so trust me if was below my expectations they would not be getting thus review.... however that was not the case the whole experience from the food to the service ... well they nailed.. and we will be going back... gd job 🙌
I’ve driven past this pub on my way from Swindon to Marlborough many times over the past 20 years but for some reason or other had never gone in. Today however I went in with my wife and am now kicking myself for not trying it earlier.
As this was Monday midday I didn’t have a reservation and in fact thought we’d have the place to ourselves. Although we were only the second occupied table it began to fill up rapidly and the phone rang almost constantly with people making reservations. Soo…..recommendation number one BOOK IN ADVANCE!
As regards the food I’d already made my mind up before I went in as I’d heard about their fish and chips. I wasn’t disappointed either as it was one of the freshest pieces of fish I’ve had in a while and having grown up in a seaside town; I know what I’m talking about! So recommendation number two TRY THE FISH & CHIPS!
The service and the pub itself were very good also so I’ll leave you with recommendation number three… GO THERE AND TRY IT FOR YOURSELF
Food and staff were nice. Not had fagots for years but local butcher's ones, Champ and red cabbage were lovely.
Had the best meal ever tonight! The bacon & maple syrup scotch egg was just amazing, so flavoursome! & the T-bone was super tasty too. Great service as always.
What a surprise! I expected it to be bog standard but the food was incredible. Nicely busy, dogs welcome, perfect food - what more could you want
Great menu choices including vegetarian and vegan options. Some creative choices including a range of specials. Delicious food. Friendly service. Dog friendly. Toilet kept clean. Parking adjacent. I really like this place!
Portion sizes were good. The potatoes were not perfectly cooked, but still edible. The meat was tender, the gravy was good. The cauli cheese and veg was honestly too much for two people, despite being delicious, so sadly much went uneaten. The ambience and setting is quaint, dogs are welcome and the staff are friendly.
The bill came to £85 for two people: starters, drinks and mains.
7.5/10
Went to this restaurant because it had a high rating which it fully deserves. Very friendly service, good menu and delicious food. Chocolate and orange tart is de-lish.
Fantastic piece of engineering, lifting two 50+ ton barges at a time 35' using only £1 of electric using Arcimedes principle and 2 water filled gondolas in balance.
Exceptional! Enjoyed a family lunch for 7 (6 adults 1 kid) to celebrate mums 80th - we treated her to her first T-bone, half of which she took home for supper nibbling, my partner and I had Lamb rump with the most amazing potato terrine, brother had “the best” burger and chips, daughter had the Fish Pot (with an array of chunky fresh fish in a creamy type soup and fresh bread), son had ham and chips and little one Haddock & chips. Service was excellent, table was set beautifully for our arrival in a cozy elevated corner and all of the food was hot and fresh and just amazing! Will definitely be back and highly recommend! x
We turned up without a booking on our way back from holiday but they fitted us in. What a great find! Lovely little pub. Great quality, delicious food and really friendly welcoming staff. Exceptional.
Slight problem with the veggie pie being overcooked but this was removed promptly and a replacement produced in a short time which was fine. Other meals were all great! Excellent service. Lovely bar. Will return!!
Lovely surprise. We ended up there when local pubs weren't serving Monday dinner. Several larger tables for bigger groups. Kid burger portions were very big. Mac n cheese was good. Adult meals were great. We had the halibut, veg masala, duck pate, and soup special. Seems a very good local option, or for those driving through. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Gave our kids a little activity bag. Some games for people to enjoy and at least one patron had a dog inside. Lot up the hill gives ample parking space.
We have driven past the places many times over the years. Unfortunately we've always been towing and unable to stop. This weekend we were going for a short break and set a time of 7pm to stop for food. We pulled up at 7 and this place was just what the doctor ordered. Great food, roast dinner on a Sunday. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Would definitely recommend. We were a family of four, two adults and two kids 10 and 8. 👍🏻
Met up with two friends for breakfast, after a dog walk this morning. Excellent food, service and surroundings. We sampled both the English and vegetarian breakfasts and can’t fault them. We will definitely be back!
Stopped in for some lunch recently whilst travelling to Gloucester. Excellent menu with the additional special menu on display. A lot of character and very warm welcome given. Very reasonably priced. Plenty of parking and easily accessible. Small outside area however not used due to November weather. If passing again I would definately call in for food.
Lovely pub with friendly staff and great food, but....
please don't put salt on the chips! Some of us would prefer to add our own.
