We went for my husbands Birthday on 22nd June 2023 and had such a lovely meal. We live locally and feel very lucky to have such a good seafood restaurant on our doorstep. The menu isn’t huge but it is quality. Lovely choice of wines and the service and the staff were spot on. Unlike the service we had in another (and rated locally) sea food restaurant a few miles down the coast last year. It was much appreciated to be back in a restaurant that got it right. Neither are inexpensive restaurants but the Tolbooth gives you a whole experience not just nice food for your money, and that’s what we are looking for. Not stuffy but class. The interior and the ambience are warm and welcoming. We will definitely be back. Thank you to the owners and everyone who was working that night. You topped off the lovely day we had for my husbands birthday. Sitting at the beautiful harbour for an hour before we came up into the restaurant made us appreciate how lucky we are to have moved to this beautiful town x
We visited at Tolbooth Seafood Restaurant at the end of a lovely trip around Scotland and it was the perfect way to end the visit.
The restaurant is beautifully set out, with a clean, inviting atmosphere that is made even better by the welcoming and friendly staff. All of the staff we encountered were lovely and managed to stay attentive and helpful without being overbearing.
For my starter I had the mussels which were nothing short of delicious. The mussels themselves were perfectly cooked and presented and the sauce was absolutely amazing! I would recommend this starter to a seafood lover.
For my main I chose the lemon sole which comes with crayfish, capers, broccoli and potatoes. It was gorgeous and extremely tasty.
We were thrilled with our meal and we hope to visit Tolbooth again very soon. Thankyou!
Exceptional seafood dining. Beautiful food perfectly presented, absolutely top quality service, wonderful atmosphere. Cannot recommend highly enough for a special occasion.

Went here for lunch on a cold wet May day (will it ever get nice), and glad we did. I had the smoked haddock chowder which was lovely and thick and very fishy. Partner had the Coronation Scallops which I tried and we both agreed were delicous. Partner then had the sea bass which again was well cooked and presented. I had the halibut, which to be honest was very nice, but needed something to lift it, just felt a little bland, although again it was well cooked and presented. I finnished off with the rhubarb and custard crumble. Not quite what you expect as the custard was set with the rhubarb placed on it with the crumble sprinkled on top. Now this is not the traditional way of doing it but it was absolutely gorgeuos. The rhubarb especialy was not cooked to a mush, but remained as cut whilst still being soft meaning it retained all its flavour. Soooooo good. We found the staff very friendly, especialy the young lad who chatted away quite happily, especialy about the cider I had which was one I had never heard off but I think I'm addicted to. Would deffinately go back.
Family were up to visit and we were celebrating a birthday. Could not fault anything. The service, food and wine recommendations were spot on. The venue itself is cosy and intimate. A really lovely evening and we will definitely be back.
Excellent food, some really interesting sauces but everything was really good. Attentive service and a very nice pace to the meal. We got a nice table with views over the harbour.
A little expensive but we'll worth it for the quality and experience.
The scrumptious food, with lots of attention to detail and flavours, plus the attentive, friendly staff made our school reunion a great success. I was also impressed by how well they managed to serve 25 of us at more or less at the same time, without any loss of quality. Highly recommendable for a special lunch or dinner out!
The food here is spectacular and adventurous. Predominantly seafood with one beef and one vegan option as well as dinner specials, the menu is limited but, in my opinion, with good reason. Each meal is prepared with great care and attention to every detail so that all foods compliment and complete each other. An excellent combination of flavors that your taste buds will happily dance in! I tried things I never expected to and liked them! Another surprise! I will definitely be going again!
Can't imagine the restaurant such like a feeling of honeymoon. Sky, pier, people, the air and never miss the tiny museum under the restaurant, the last is smell the salty air outside. Although a bit expensive, just give us a Break to relax.
The food .... amazing taste good, yummy.
Wow!! Has Stonehaven been keeping this their own little secret
Food was just fab, could not fault anything. Service and setting were amazing, but the food was truely delicious!! Cannot wait to return will definietly bring visitors with us to wow them too.
Nice wines and lovely to see the kitchen on the way in, with a hello from the chefs. Also fortunate to have a table by a window overlooking the harbour. If you go there soon, i recommend the Scallop served with Pork belly starter and the the hake as a main.. delicious!
What a find! Dinner for two - entree, amuse bouche, starter, main and 1 dessert, plus 2 bottles of wine, all for about £130.
Very attentive and friendly service from the staff all evening. All the dishes were fabulous - good flavours subtly seasoned, and artfully presented. The chef clearly knows what he wants to achieve and brings out the best in his ingredients. All the fish are freshly caught and locally sourced, so no doubt the menu will change frequently. There were three specials and then a choice of 3-4 starters, mains and desserts. Plenty!
The restaurant is on the first floor of a quaint building by the harbour (outdoor stone steps, note) but unfortunately the windows are too small for guests to enjoy the view. We were there on Wednesday evening and all the tables were booked, so I think reservations are a must to avoid disappointment. Highly recommend this place!
Very surprising! Great food and good service, very light. Breath of fresh air from all the fried pub food in the area :) and good vegan options too!
Called in at Stonehaven on the 'off chance' to look for somewhere to eat. WOW! What an absolute find this restaurant was. From enquiring (with Ricky) if they had a Table to when we left, this was special. We were fortunate to be seated by the window, overlooking the harbour, on a glorious evening. The food was excellent, perfectly cooked and so tasty. The Service was amazing and everyone, but especially Ricky, made our visit so memorable.
Wonderful find. Amazing and delicious food made in unique ways. Friendly staff who were very accommodating. The place has a very nice and cute ambiance. Makes for a lovely evening for any occasion. Definitely will be returning.
We enjoyed a very high quality seafood lunch in this beautiful restaurant. The food was exquisite and beautifully presented - I particularly appreciated my gin-cured sea trout entrée.
The service was welcoming and attentive, making our whole experience quite memorable.
Good choices on menu and food beautifully cooked and presented.
Suggest website is updated as price of set lunch menu had doubled!
Fabulous seafood cooked to perfection. We had natural oysters, steam mussels for starter followed by lemon sole and monkfish
Very lovely restaurant. Staff were really friendly and food was unreal! Had the specials - scallops for entree and sea bass for mains probably the nicest fish I’ve ever had! Highly recommend!
