Saw their Facebook page totally forgot about the place to be honest, booked a table for 4pm as they’re only open from 12-6pm! Dined in one of their railway carriages! Super comfy chairs and felt we were thrown back to the 50’s nice and warm, service with a smile always a winner for me, we ate from the 3 course menu, good choice and just the right amount of food! Would highly recommend this place.
Wow what a night we left feeling like we were super stars, Food was absolutely amazing 👏. The train carriage was a real special atmosphere, and the staff made us feel like stars. All in all it made our anniversary a fantastic night.
Situated a 5 minute drive away from the village of Hilderstone, this venue surprised me for all the right reasons.
We were shown to our table upon arrival, which was situated in a converted train carriage. The food came out within roughly 10 minutes of ordering, and the Sunday roast was delicious. The roast potato's and Yorkshire pudding was crispy and the gravy not too watery. The staff were on hand to ensure we had everything we needed and the prices were fair, with 2 courses costing £17 pounds each.
I would visit this place again in the future.
Wonderful service, we were told they were short staffed, but the lady (Becky) serving did not falter and gave us fantastic service.
The food was amazing, both parties at our table enjoyed a delicious 3 courses!
The Eton Mess is an absolute must for pudding!
Will be returning - definitely!
Really nice visit to the spot gate carriages.
Very attentive staff , lovely pub wether in the main building or the carriages the setting is really nice .
We had a private booth on one of the carriages, really cosy and the drinks and food were very nice , my only gripe food wise would be frozen chips "WHY " everyone love homemade chips and my main was £14 and yes it was nice but on the expensive side really for frozen chips .
This is a nice place for a meal inside one of two static railway coaches. The atmosphere is nice, the service friendly and efficient. It's ideal for families as well. The food, though nice, could have done with an extra bit of variety on the menu. Would happily go back here again.
Took my partner for a long waited night out, he's was absolutely blown away with the carriages, very impressed. The food was delicious (the only issue was the cut of sirloin was a little too fatty ). The starters ( garlic mushroom / Kings prawns) were spot on, and I had the steak and ale pie, which was perfect.
This restaurant offers a unique ambience if you dine inside their static train coaches. It was like stepping back in time! It also gave a feeling of exclusivity specially if no other customers inside! 😜 The food was fine for a Sunday roast and they have a good list of cocktails to choose from. The only thing we struggled with were the silverware, they are not comfortable to use and a bit soft as they get bended easily. Big thumbs up to all the hardworking and lovely ladies who served us that day, including the back of the house who cooked and prepared our food from starters to desserts… 👍
We held my Mum’s wake here last Friday, it was one of her favourite places. First of all the staff were wonderful, very kind and attentive. The buffet was amazing - lots of variety and plenty of food. The atmosphere was lovely, especially the carriages which felt really cosy, and the whole thing made a very sad day end on a brighter note.
I never heard of the place as it's not well advertised but my partner came here years ago and took me as a surprise meal because of its quirkiness.
It was a friday late lunch date and the staff are really good an accommodating. Overall it was a lovely meal. I have only 2 issues. I had a pate starter and felt 3 pieces of toast would have been better than 2. I was left to eat a clump pate on its own and was generous with the toast I had.
Also, the apple crumble. Although the apples were lovely Once you get further in it gets wetter. It was too watery. I would recommend draining them more
I would go again but I won't have the same food.
We do love the spot gate. This time w me were in the train car, Ursula. Loved it. Food was lovely. Above standard. Service was a little slow at times, but they did have a wake in before us. All in all its a solid 8/10 from me. Definitely going back 👍
Not being on the doorstep, however, we have been three times since May 2023. The lunchtime menu was brilliant value, along with good food being hot, and the service also being very good. Waiting an hour for food, as someone has stated, seems a little exaggerated, as I think most people would express their disappointment, after a maximum of about 30 mins., before asking the obvious question. My good lady is also someone that would not return to an establishment, if the food was not up to scratch.
Gorgeous food really relaxed atmosphere
Fantastic service!
Felt really welcomed by very accommodating staff..
My son who is 13 said how lovely the food was!!
"Well impressed" was his word's
3 of us visited Spot Gate Inn on a Saturday late afternoon after learning that it had changed hands back in 2022. One of us was in a wheel chair. They have a large carpark so parking wasn't an issue. Greeted by friendly welcoming staff. We were seated behind the bar area in what they called the snug. A cosy area of the restaurant next to an open fire. A welcome sight in such dismal weather.
The menu has all the pub classics which can be seen on the website.
It aims to offer good quality pub food nothing too high end which is quite often too high priced also.
We had steaks and ham and eggs. All came promptly, hot, cooked well and delicious. To follow we had the classic hot chocolate fudge cake with custard and lemon meringue cheesecake. Sweet and delectable.
Good selection of expected drinks on the menu.
All round great country pub experience. Dogs also allowed. Accessibility is good considering it's an old stone building that is limited as to how it can be adapted.
Highly recommended. Will be returning.
Stunning place, lovely food. The staff is very polite and very present. Maybe could do with a little more attention regarding dusting specially around the train carriages.
