What a hidden (ignored?) gem. Whist my wife ran the Tescos parking gauntlett, I wandered over the bridge into the Old Town. Despite driving around the area on an almost daily basis, I'd forgotten The Chequers existed, and it was on the way to try some other pubs that I spotted it and thought: Why not?
And why not indeed? What a fantastic, reasonably priced establishment with a wide range of beers. I tried the excellent Mild, a rare treat, and only hope that the pubs "off the beaten track" location doesn't threaten it's future.
After I had been summoned to enjoy (?) the delights of Stevenage, I wangled a revisit in order to further sample the wares on offer. Much busier upon my return, the Porter and Stout were in superb form and very reasonably priced.
All too soon I received the call that the Old Lady had negotiated Tescos car park and was waiting outside. Shame. Kindred spirits, Pete and Robin were more than willing to lead me astray. Next time, I hope.
Stunning pub. Beautiful historic decor. Great relaxing atmosphere with very welcoming staff. Wonderful selection of guest ales and beers. This is a very highly recommended pub to visit. What more could you want :)

11/08/23 the two staff tending the bar were so polite and welcoming. Sometimes, I've felt unwelcome at the chequers, I do really like the pub regardless. But, the bar staff tonight have definitely made me feel more welcome than I did in the past.
Good selection of beers helpful staff plenty of seating & outside area.
Great place to have a sensible drink - a very friendly place with lovely staff! Highly recommended go see for yourselves ππΊπΊπΊ
Helpful and friendly bar staff. A relatively quiet and calm location away from the bustle of most of the Old Town. Beer was kept well. Will visit again.
Great range of ales, very dog friendly too, this place is often a stop mid dog walk π
Best "proper pub" in Stevenage. Dont be fooled by GK signage, very good selection of less well known brews including some dark ales
Blonde lady with short hair was very accomodating and kind, quick to collect empty glasses and plates and serving. Food not bad either. Thank you
Nice pub service good just had drinks
Typical working mens pub, good for beer and soft drink. Does not serve food, have limited bar snacks - crisps and on the day I visited coffee machine was out of order!
Excellent choice of beer which is kept very well.
Good beer, friendly faces. What else can I say?
Amazing food, great service.lovely atmosphere.
Lovely place. Nice friendly staff with a beautiful spaniel that I guess lives at the pub. Good selection of beers. No football, darts and pool if this is what you are looking for. Just a good solid pub.
Busy pub, good mix of young and old customers. Cute and friendly dog behind the bar- friendly bar staff. Would go again
Really good selection of ales, and Asahi on tap. Can be difficult to find seating when it's really busy, but a fair amount of seating outside too.
Just been there as start a new job round the corner. Loved it. Really chill, waitress was sound and passionate about her work and the pub. Plus had an ace dark beer on that was actually tasty. 5.5 Oakham porter, clearly it was kept well, she said they try to get a dark beer on all the time during winter. It was a real nice pub. Proper British decor and cozy. Would definitely recommend if ur an ale fan. Bless ππΌπ€πΌππΌ
