An amazing village pub full of character and history. The landlord is super friendly and happy to tell all about the pub and the village. The pub has a connection to the phrase "worth its weight in gold" due to the racehorse it's named after. One of only 3 pubs with that name in the UK and very much a key part of the village. Food was on offer, looked good but expect simple pub food not gourmet meals and that's not what this pub is about.
If you are up in the peaks visiting the dancing ladies and other great historic monuments, be sure to stop here for a well-earned rest and enjoy the atmosphere.
What a cracking pub - super food and great beer - wonderful to have such a good veggie choice without the standard 'token veggie options' - super dog friendly - top notch.
This place is amazing. The staff and owners are so friendly. I had the homemade homity pie which was wonderful. So much choice when it comes to alcohol free beers. I don't drink but was assured by those with me that the alcoholic offerings were very good too.
When someone asks me what it is about pubs and drinking, pubs such as The Flying Childers give me the perfect response:
Cosy, welcoming, intimate and full of character. Add to that, great beers and log fire.
A lovely experience.
A traditional, dog friendly, country pub within a beautiful Derbyshire village. Very friendly and courteous landlord & lady. A variety of real ales and ciders.
Good local live music on occasions.
Just a shame it is unable to provide evening meals, but there is a pop-up pizza on alternate Wednesdays
Had lunch here last week, lovely little pub which is dog friendly, serves good beer and has a fairly unusual menu. The fish finger sandwiches were lovely.
Only rom for 3 or 4 cars in park and road parking is tight.
I went lunchtime today just for a coffee, I haven't been in the pub for years and I was so impressed! The atmosphere was lovely and welcoming, and the coffee was well priced and clearly good quality. The menu looks great and I will definitely be be back for something to eat. The toilets were very clean and beautifully decorated with quality toiletries and tampons available if needed which I think is shows how considerate and thoughtful the owners must be!
Lovely quaint village pub. Very accommodating and friendly staff - couldn't do enough for us. Had a fantastic meal with lovely beer and the dog loved it too. Will definitely be back when we're in the area. Thanks so much.
Amazing pub with a brilliant landlord! We stopped in for a quick lunch and pint during a long dog walk and were so impressed. The food is excellent (particularly recommend the homemade curried pasty) and the ales were delicious, plus the kind landlord went over and above to make our visit memorable. Definitely recommend a visit.
Nice pub and outdoor seating area, quality cask beers but really dire toasties, two slices of thick bread with griddle marks on either side, cheese not fully melted, worst toasties I've had in a long time.
Response from the owner 2 days ago:-
Hiya Charles, I'm sorry to hear you didn't like our premium tiger bread grilled cheese toasties, but glad to hear you enjoyed our wonderful cask ales and outdoor seating areas. We'd love to have a sit down with you sometime to discuss how we can produce the best toastie you've ever had 🤩 Any way we can improve on our services we are always humble to constructive feedback 🥰 We look forward to welcoming you back soon and talking toasties 🤩
For the best toasties; plain thin sliced white bread, two slices, must be spread on each side with plenty of butter, any one of your superb fillings with plenty of cheese, squeeze together slices and squash in either a heated mould or a griddle, edges should seal, bread should crisp up slightly and turn golden. Enjoy in the Childers.
Awesome seitan and jackfruit burger with a delicious pint of Abbeydale Moonshine. Great menu with loads (a surprising amount) of veggie and vegan options! Great location! A Proper English Pub!!
Lovely little place. Very friendly staff. Bit pricey but I don’t think that’s greed, I imagine it’s difficult to maintain a pub like this in this economy.
Main menu food is generally vegetarian so we didn’t eat, but looked lovely and other customers seemed very happy.
What a great pub. A truly modern pub with a modern menu. Not fancy, no gimmicks, just great. Why can't all Peak pubs be like this rather than the stale old same routine?
Proper pub - tooked away but friendly and welcoming and good range of beers and lagers on tap - shame they aren't doing evening food (be warned) but a cozy place well worth stopping off at. (If you were wondering - it's named after a Duke of Devonshire race horse!)
What a great little pub this is! Head out to the Seven Sisters, Druids Caves or Robin Hood's Stride in the morning, then head here for a delicious lunch and a friendly welcome!
But get there early, as it is popular and busy!
My wife, daughter and I had a light lunch: ham & cheese toastie, ham sandwich and pea and ham soup. Finished up with brownie & ice cream and Bailey's Coffee. With refreshments, we paid £37 which we found very reasonable and went away very satisfied.
The small Christmas market which they were hosting was a pleasant surprise.
Our daughter had a great time with the hustle and bustle that comes with a cosy pub and had a great chat about her ice cream while she waited
Already planning our next visit, with family, later this month.
Fantastic pub, extremely friendly and welcoming and delicious food. Loads of great veggie/vegan options and a great range of drinks.
Lovely place to visit with a warm welcome and a great choice of vegan food available. Our meal of chickpea and curry pasty with salad and fries was really tasty and the vegan sticky toffee pudding and ice cream was delicious. Very friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere mean that we will definitely visit again!
Proper traditional pub with bags of character. It's like stepping back in time and the pub has won multiple awards. Good choice of real ales as you would expect, hikers, dogs & children all welcome.
Great vegetarian and vegan food and good cider and wine at a very fair price - what more could you want?
After many visits over the last few years, this place's food keeps getting better and better!
The Flying Childers really is one of our favourites!
