In a mood to party during my visit to London, few of my London-ites took me to George for a couple of drinks.
It was raining outside and we somehow managed to reach around 8:30pm there and were amazed to find the place almost full. Luckily we found a place near the bar at a high table and chair and ordered couple of J20 juices, Smirnoff white and WKD.
The ambiance and the decor of the place was quite an interesting one, with hip hop playing and people hanging out with their friends. The first floor was more for the folks who prefer to dine and drink.
It was very well conceptualised and they had made appropriate usage of the place.
Their menu was one of the craziest menu ever which had all the fusions of alcohol on it, so many varieties of beers, Cocktails, wines.. it was definitely a drinking place and I had a great time.
Frances Moulton hit the nail on the head with her review of The George: "simple, but getting it right." And The George does get it right, over and over again, which has led to it becoming the dependable go-to pub in Staines. It is also my own local, and I find myself in there more than any other pub, bar, or restaurant. The George is home.
Without wanting to sound too preachy, I'll sum up what makes the pub what it is: cheap pricing, typical of Wetherspoons, which means you can easily order a filling meal with a drink for under a tenner; short waiting times and swift service from friendly, laid-back staff; a recently-added beer garden to make the most of the sun (when it's there); and, actually, hearty and decent food.
The menu is broad for both food and drinks, and The George offers breakfasts, dinners, and desserts. There are also a range of deals available throughout the week that let you reduce the price of what you pay even further - for example, my friend managed to get her plate of ham, eggs, and chips for a minuscule £3 the other day. Be sure to try the sweet chili noodles, which are surprisingly fiery, and the chips, which are always lovely, and come with a lot of the dishes. The George also serves a massive mixed meat grill - the only thing lean about it is the price.
The George gets very busy on Friday and Saturday nights, which gives it a fantastic atmosphere. I always seem to be bumping into people I haven't seen in ages and having catch-ups at the bar, and everyone that goes to this pub seems to share and engage in this communal spirit. Cheers!
I feel I am rather biased when it comes to The George: it is my local.
I have spent birthdays, Christmas Eves and many a Friday night at The George and it is close to my heart.
No matter what time of the day you go in you will always find people in there. Their dishes are simple, but perfect comforting pub food. Their breakfasts always hit the right spot, the Eggs Benedict is my personal favorite. For dinner it has to be the "burger and a pint" deal. Simple, but getting it right.
Of course there is also the rather appealing Wetherspoon's pricing. The George is no exception. I still get a kick from being able to buy a round for under a tenner. The relaxing beer garden makes those cheap drinks even more enjoyable.
To get the real George experience, pop down at Christmas Eve. The whole pub is bursting, with a queue out the front. Everyone is in happy spirits and the countdown to Christmas is the best way to start the festivities. The bar staff are always welcoming and friendly, however they have a habit of employing cocky bouncers.
Friendly staff, super busy downstairs, upstairs is alot quieter and nicer. The only downside with upstairs is that they close the bar early which means everyone has to troop back downstairs, which ruins the night a bit. The food is quite nice too. The drinks menu needs to be more varied, and needs to introduce a cocktail menu as this would boost customers and sales. The furniture is comfy, but the chairs need to be re-upholstered as they are becoming a bit threadbare on places.
Good value for money.
The food is usually ok for the price, I recently had breakfast there and it was better than ever. The service also improved, more professional staff this time. I recommend the breakfast options, also the avocado muffin is absolutely yummy! Keep up the good work!
Great place for a breakfast and never ending coffee for around £6 all in. Their sausages have won awards, so it's not all generic low value food. Wetherspoons do what they do and they do it well. Their places are always clean and fresh and their food and drink are reasonably priced and pretty damn good for all of that. This particular Spoons is a pleasant enough place and with a reasonable sized upstairs. On this occasion we went for lunch on a Saturday and it was extremely busy. We found a table upstairs and used the app to order. Considering how busy they were, drinks were brought up fairly promptly and the food followed shortly afterwards and was very tasty.
Their decaf coffee is the tastiest and smoothest, I have had anywhere in the world. Enjoy your visit, fairly responsibly! We had a spicy meat feast pizza £11 which was lush, 2 tasty southern fried chicken with Chipotle mayo wraps £6.50 each with an alcoholic drink and a chicken strips burger £3. The staff were great and extremely helpful.
I had a fantastic time at The George - JD Wetherspoon with my friends. The atmosphere was lively, the service was friendly, and the selection of beer was excellent. The pub's cozy, typical English style ambiance made the experience even more enjoyable.
I have avoided this spoons for a while as have had heard people saying it was a bit rough. We came here in a Sunday afternoon and had a lovely meal. The staff were really friendly and there was plenty of seating. There was the normal great menu with loads of choice. The food was well cooked and came quickly.
Amazing food. Amazing staff. Spacious pub with lot of natural light.
Me and my friend came in for some drinks and we were approached by three men who were very un-welcomed and rude. They wouldn’t leave us alone even after asking if they could do so and they were very racist and rude. I went to the bar staff and said about ask Angela as we wanted to leave and we’re very unhappy and the staff were absolutely amazing. We felt much safer and well looked after and managed to get out safely. A huge thank you to everyone who helped tonight
It's cheap. You wouldn't take your wife/girlfriend there to impress her. But it's such good value you can tolerate the variable service: sometimes food or drink arrives almost before you order it, and sometimes it takes half an hour and turns up cold. The staff obviously work very hard but still are very friendly. I go mid-week once a month or so with a group of male friends.
Nice pub, good atmosphere, visited with a mate when we went to Thorpe Park. Had the fish and chips. Fish was a bit watery but ample chips. Hence the 4 star. If we visit again and I try something else, may push it to 5 stars.
I've been living in the area for about 5 years but had never visited until my friend asked me to go with him. We were in a group of six, with three children. The place was full being a weekend lunch time but luckily there was some additional seating upstairs.
I had the 5bean veggie rice. The taste was really good. Mates had burger, fries, nachos and drinks. They also loved the tasted. It did not cost much, the cost of one drink and a main is less than 6 pounds in the deal.
Place to go for a pint! The ambiance and the nice setting. Hidden Beer garden in the back , terrace in the street or the lounges downstairs or upstairs. The food is unfortunately disappointing
great pub with very nice prices, table service is available. Social hub for residents of Stines and beyond
Good value for food .The atmosphere is acceptable enough and the service is of quite poor standards sometimes but overall good it's always a clean and relaxing place to be .
Love this place, food always tastes good and prices are amazing. Friendly staff too!
