They serve coffee. And things to eat. I had cinnamon on top of mine. I find it's nicer than chocolate. The tables are close enough together so you can hear what your neighbours are talking about. It's great! Someone dropped a glass whilst I was there. It exploded into tiny pieces. But they cleared it up real quick.
I have had coffee from st Albans costs for many years. Always great service, and great coffee.

I find it less busy than the Costa in the main street. Quicker to get served and if the weather is good one can sit outside.
Standard branch of Costa, sited within The Maltings. Counter service of decent coffee, along with a fairly limited selection of pastries, sandwiches and snacks. There is some seating downstairs if the Ground Floor is busy. If you're lucky, you might find a vacant seat or two outside on a warm day. There are five or so small tables outside, including a couple under cover (often advisable in the UK!) Not an inspiring setting, but they have made an effort with pretty hanging baskets and shrubs.
