Really wonderful pub, one of the best historic establishments that makes St Albans the pub capital of the UK. Re: the hog roast thing - I'm vegan, and obviously not a fan of hog roasts. But these kind of cyber attacks backfire, clearly in this case! It's not like the Lower Red is the only pub in the world serving meat. Much love to the LRL (y)

I've stayed twice at the Lower Red Lion. And both stays were so relaxing, a superb breakfast too with tasty sausages and bacon. I'd definitely recommend it as a proper pub with rooms.

Cosy pub with the best chips and sticky toffee pudding in St Albans. Perfect inside with two fireplaces roaring on a cold day and a new beer garden for a beautiful day like this one.

Love this pub! Everything about it from its location in the quaintest street in St Albans, to the fantastic welcome Dave and his team always give, truly excellent food, friendly atmosphere, and superb beer garden. It's such a part of the community, just what a real pub should be.

The Lower Red is a family tradition for us, a lovely local pub, my dad has been a regular for over 30 years and now I'm continuing this. The setting, the food, the location, it's a win win, we love it.

My son took me to The Lower Red Lion for Sunday Roast. Being a nice traditional english pub, with excellent beers, it is the only one in St Albans that offers spanish beer Mahou. That is a must for the small community of spanish expats. I will come back for sure in my next visita to St Albans.

Great pub. The only place in St Alban's that does gluten free fish and chips as standard. Plus they have a no kids policy and are dog friendly so added bonus!

Came here December 2021 when the clowns were humming and !@! about another Christmas Lockdown. Madge is on her first visit. Excellent real ale pub, also doing great food. Deservedly in the 2023 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Great 3 room pub with large beer garden. Ticked off two new micro breweries..Burning Soul and Lakedown. Thus a big success for me.

I've been there at the Jubilee Weekend. I was very surprised by the beer festival in the garden and had the chance to taste a few very nice ales and milk stout. Very friendly staff! I can highly recommend this pub. Definitely going back there when I'm in St. Alban's.

Most. Delicious. Sunday roast. Ever We love a day out in St Albans (we live in North West London and its only a short drive) and really fancied a traditional Sunday Roast so ventured down to the Lower Red Lion. From the off the pub is cosy and traditional, with panelled walls and a fire place. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, so much so it kind of felt like we'd popped over to a friend of a friends place for lunch. We both ordered a Sunday lunch and it was terrific. The bar for a Sunday roast is high, not to mention they're pretty common and largely all the same. But all the ingredients were really well cooked and that gravy! We'll be back.

A former 17th century coaching inn and now a pub/B&B - so maybe a 21st century coaching inn! Having two bars, an open fire, real ales and traditional decor, this is a ‘proper’ pub. Dog but not children-friendly works well, given its size. The quality of the excellent food didn’t surprise me but the variety did; exceeding my expectations. A gem of a place - just tucked away far enough from the centre. So pleased that it hasn’t disappeared like the Blue Anchor and Black Lion - instead it seems to have thrived!

This is a very nice pub with two drinking and dining areas split and served by one bar. There are a really good choice of Ales and Beer, I went for the Shipyard IPA. The pub is very close to the Cathedral but despite this has never been very busy on the occasions I have visited, not that I'm complaining, more a gentile flow of customers. They are a dog friendly pub as well which appears to attract quite a few people given its proximity to Verulamium Park. I cant comment on food as it was just the Shipyard and some bar snacks for me, but a couple of regulars did tell me the food is good.
