Absolutely wonderful evening with Amy at this fabulous restaurant! I had a challenge with local parking which the restaurant mgt helped me out with even before our evening began... When it was time for me to take breath, we enjoyed fabulous bar and dining rooms. For me, the cuisine was exquisit , service exceptional (serving staff always wore a smile and went to great effort to explain the 'make up' / composition of every dish !!) If you want a special evening out with your partner at St Albans, you will find anywhere else hard to best Thompsons!!

Exquisite dishes cooked to perfection. I’m surprised this doesn’t have a Michelin Star already. It won’t be long I’m sure. Excellent service and wine choices with the 7 course tasting menu (although I would avoid the ‘orange’ wine - a current fad)

Came here for lunch to celebrate a special occasion with a friend. Great service and friendly staff. The food was nice but unsure if it’s worth the ££££ price tag - perhaps dinner would have been more appropriate? Overall a pleasant experience and would revisit for the full tasting menu!

Perfect service and a brilliant a la carte menu. Enjoyed the very rich prawn starter, delicious ox cheek main but the standout was a mind blowingly excellent pineapple desert! Will definitely be back for a special occasion. Only criticism is the dining rooms look quite drab - tired chairs and depressing paint, decor and lighting. ‘Food and service more than makes up for this!

Our first time at Thompson and it more than stood up to it's reviews; From stepping in the door the staff were excellent and welcoming, the food, accompanying wine and explanations of what we were eating great and all well presented - I'll be back for the 7 courses next! I wish you continued success.

It is one of our favorite local restaurant. Excellent food and service. We went this time to celebrate birthday and ordered 9 courses menu, to be honest, it was too much and too long service, too much mousses served in most of the courses (that's why only 4 stars this time). The chef's choice had truffles (...and mousse) which was very tasty (and adds £30 more per person, kind of expensive...). As conclusion, 7 courses should be more than enough.

Absolutely outstanding experience from start to finish. The service is excellent, the food an incredible journey of unexpected tastes and textures, and the overall atmosphere is both calm but warm and inviting. Highly highly highly recommend. When you eat food this good, you wonder why we should put up with ever eating badly.

Did the 7 course taster menu. It was excellent. Two of our party did the wine pairing and were very impressed. As the driver I tried the alcohol free cocktails and the No-ito was superb.

Amazing dinning experience, had a great birthday celebration there. I liked the fact the whole table didn't have to choose exactly the same tasting menu. We were also able to have our own cake! Highly recommend as a place for celebratory meals!

Wonderful meal, tried the vegetarian taster meal. Become a regular visit for a friend's birthday meal. Shame the a la carte didn't have non game meat on the menu. Very busy today and service a bit slow but waiter was great. The herbs gnocchi and chocolate marquis were real highlights. Excellent wine as it should be at the price. Really loved the meal.

This is a true occasion restaurant. You will get something special here unlike anywhere else in St Albans. Had the tasting menu. It was fabulous. The service was first class. Can’t fault the place. Yes it is expensive but you get what you pay for.

My partner and I visited Thompson's last Friday for their 'date night' special....4 courses and a glass of bubbles of £37.50 each. Yes really. I work in the restaurant sector and I can say, hands down, that if this restaurant was based in the centre of London, it would be giving the big boys a run for their money - and guess what? It's on our doorstep. The Mushroom veloute was one of the best dishes I've ever had. If you live within a driveable distance of St Albans, I would highly recommend you give Thompson's a go - and not just for a 'special occasion'. It absolutely comes in my top 3 of all time favourite restaurants. Go and sample the exquisite delights that Chef Phil and the team conjure up. I would be surprised if you left disappointed.

Thompson's h restaurant is well decorated and cosy, perfect for a date night with your loved one. We had the tasting menu which was very nice. The waiting staff were superb and the assistant manager was always around to check that everything was ok. We asked plenty of questions about the food which were all answered with out hesitation and the recommended wine choses were perfect. Would recommend this place and will also return myself.

This was a Sunday Lunch straight out of the top draw. I'd heard about this restaurant from seeing that friends we know had dined there a few times . With that in mind yesterday we decided to pay a visit ourselves and believe me the pleasure was all ours. Set on the edge of St Albans town centre and although the restaurant doesn't have its own car park there is ample lparking within a 5 minute walk. As you enter you are given a great friendly welcome and as you look around you see that the restaurant is set out with three dining areas which would be ideal for functions and a nice bar area. Our table was in the front dining area where we enjoyed a lovely glass of champagne while we looked at the menu. We then chose our starters which were the Tartare of Yellowfin Tuna & the Smoked Salmon with Crab Mayonnaise & I have to say both dishes were fabulous This took us to the main event that was the amazing roast dinners and very hearty they were to. We chose the Roast Duck & the amazing Roast Beef which was so succulent in fact perfect accompanied by fantastic roast potatoes delightful vegetables and a glorious Yorkshire Pudding After a nice rest which was required it was time for desserts and these turned out to be as heavenly as expected. We chose the Vanilla Rice Pudding a great Apple & Sultana Crumble & a fantastic Warm Chocolate Brownie This ended our fantastic Sunday Lunch and one that I'll remember for a long time. We will definitely be returning soon to try the Tasting Menu. It was also nice to have a chat with Head Chef / Owner Phil Thompson after dinner who is a really nice man & you can clearly see that his character shines through to all his staff. This is a restaurant that I would highly recommend as the food and service is excellentj

Had an amazing time at this lovely restaurant. Even the bread and butter was something else! Had a 7 course tasting menu with a wine flight. We had both vegetarian and non vegetarian menus. Everything was clearly explained and some very interesting facts with the wine flight about where the wines come from. The member of staff was really knowledgeable and was able to answer questions about them too. The food was amazing. One member of the group, who described themselves as a fussy eater, was surprised with the flavours and things he would eat and actually enjoyed. We would definitely go back.
