Reviews The Railway Hotel

Didn't think there were any remaining hidden gems in terms of Essex dining, but the Railway Hotel in Southend has proved me absolutely wrong! My girlfriend and I visit often for tattoo appointments and shopping from Brentwood and will now be making a stop here regularly. The most surprising aspect was not the delicious taste OR reasonable pricing. It was the tremendously humble, welcoming service and the immense variety of dishes that wins for me. This establishment is a vegan's paradise but carnivores feel welcome!

Amazing pub has lovely furniture and is run by great people. I attended the Soup micro fundraising event was a real positive place to be. The vegan breakfast was amazing as well

Great selection of Vegan food on the menu with some lovely crafty beers to go with it. The pizza's, best in town for less than a tenner & staff, pleased to inform, advise & suggest menu items. A really cool musical vibe in here. It's like a hip London pub, plonked into a town that needs a bit info about what people want. Ie, vodka revolution has just opened up... Come on Southend, this isn't 2003. The bartender was also more than happy to jump up on the bar to get a great photo of our gang that day. We'll be back!

This is one of my favorite places for a drink and the prices are very reasonable too. The food is great especially the pizzas and I'm not a vegan just for the record. Always something going on weather it's a comedy night a ska night or even jazz in the afternoon it all happens here. Overall a great pub with lots of quirks and charm too.

Love this place. Great music and awesome vegan food (even if you're a carnivore like me, especially the pizzas). They also have a 'pay it forward scheme' to help feed the homeless. Nice to see a local business with a social conscience.

I've given 4 stars for the friendly atmosphere of this place. Everyone is so welcoming. Perfect if you enjoy live bands & you're a smoker! If you can look past the fact that its an old pub with tired decor 😉 its definitely worth a visit.

This is a fantastic place to enjoy a drink and and some live music. The pub owns itself to a more alternative vibe. The food served is also 100% vegan. Now I am not a vegan nor a vegetarian myself but I must say there 100% vegan pizza is something that must be eaten. It's certainly 10 out of 10. Drinks can be a little pricey, but nothing that is going to ruin your pocket. Also has a beer garden with a stage for live music. 3 venues in one!

So, was talked into visiting here on an impromptu evening out; given my clubbing and pubbing days are well behind me I was a little anxious about what I'd be faced with. However, this place does lots of find raising nights (we were there for Roots) and comes with all kinds of people, all ages and attire. Well enjoyed evening, and pizza good also!

EDIT: Unfortunatly, they no longer serve food apart from the ocassional pizza. Still welcoming and comfortable with a great vibe and live music. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Rather shabby but comfortable and friendly with a great atmosphere. There is a good selection of really tasty vegetarian and vegan food. Drinks are expensive though. They regularly have live music and have had some amazing bands and musicians.

Ordered food from here whilst staying at a hotel near by. We had struggled to find decent vegan options the few days prior to this we were so exited to find this place. The food didn't disappoint, we had pasta, pizza and fried chicken and all of it was so good, I would definitely recommend this place.

Best atmosphere, live music, art and people to be found in town - if not much of the UK. Visit for the great food. Stay as you come to appreciate what a gem this pub is. Shabby? Sometimes. Random? Definitely. But in these things it is the definition of what the UK is at its often overlooked heart. The best pub in the universe...

Great ale, Amazing Vegan menus - the absolute best in Southend!!!! Plus and live music. This place is a bit ragged around the edges (plastic glasses etc), and full of character and characters which is fun but it could do with a good scrub if you know what I mean! I will be back.

Went to a fundraiser here. Lovely old place filled with history. James the owner a lovely guy willing to educate on historical old building. Brilliant live music, it's a shame the middle class pretend snobs cannot see it's worthiness.

Not polished, but a real fire and a charm of a real local music venue. Not many left, too many have been turned into bland chains. Vegan pizza is amazing. Definitely coming back.
