I managed to wangle a table at 9pm on a Saturday evening after making many a phone call during the week. The restaurant is clearly in high demand and I can certainly see why! We arrived at 8pm and had a drink in the downstair's bar, which is relaxed and contains a mismatch of good quality antique furniture, it works very well. After ordering a bottle of prosecco and having a seat, the very friendly and professional barman came over and let us know that our table was ready and waiting for us should we wish but there was no rush. This was a nice touch. He even ran upstairs to get us a menu to browse over while we relaxed with a drink. The menu is inspiring and there is no set cuisine, which is refreshing. It ranges from an oriental element of chilli cocunut prawns right through to roasted lamb with colcannon. There is something for everyone. Most dishes are served with vegetables and potatoes but sides can be added at a very reasonable price. We were seated upsatirs at our own leisure and were led to a table by a very friendly and professional lady. We were given attention, were offered water but again, felt under no pressure to rush ourselves. We were advised that there were very few scallops left, this caused me to immediately order the pork belly and scallops. The waitress excused herself to ensure I was guaranteed my starter, a little touch that went a long way. We were also advised that the chateaubriand sauce was to be replaced by the redcurrant sauce on the fillet steak. We ordered and were advised that there were many orders into the kitchen and there may be a wait, as we were seated at our 9pm table at 8:30 and being served, this was not an issue. However, the staff managed our expectations which is very professional. Our starters arrived and were extremely well presented. My pork belly and scallops was plentiful but the real event was the chilli cocunut prawns which looked and smelt amazing. They tasted even better, I was fortunate enough to be allowed a taste and I have to say that even with my high end, incredibly tasty starter.I had serious food envy. It was a thai dish in essence and was cooked to perfection, a real treat! The main course of Slow roasted Lamb shank and colcannon and the sirloin with a beautiful redcurrant sauce were well executed, plentiful and very tasty. My physillis cheesecake washed down with double espresso was delicious. It was served with Rossi's ice cream as well I believe, well when in Rome! I have only good things to say about this restaurant, I have been many times and it gets better each and every time I go. The staff are a credit to the restaurant and the whole evening was pretty much perfect. Thank you to the staff and chef's at this lovely restaurant, keep up the good work!

A great menu, friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere, this place has it all, though sometimes it can get rather busy, and I feel they could perhaps get in extra staff members for these periods. Despite this though, it's never overly noisy, and you can hold a conversation accross a table without having to shout. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of service, as well as the food and drink reflect this well.

I've visted both the bar and the restaurant and I have to say I was rather impressed. The bar is low key and grown up. Comfy chairs are littered amongst the tables, and one can clearly hold a conversation with friends. Good bar staff. The restaurant upstairs provided good service, nice wine choice and huge portions! Recommended.

The last time I dined in The Mews the food and ambience were superb. The Sun was setting and shining through the Church which is situated in front of the restaurant and streaming in. It reminded me of being back in France.Especially decor wise inside. You were spoilt for choice picking something to eat from the menu.Overall a lovely relaxed experience.I'd heard Helen Mirren had dined there a few days after me so if it's good enough for the Queen you can't go wrong!

I have been her on two occasions (one last Christmas!) and due to go again twice in the next month. Service is great the menu is even better. What I like is the extensive menu. If you go during the festive season there isn't 'turkey' in sight. Instead very different dishes which are served piping hot and well presented. The portions are large and the desserts are scrummy. Highly recommended!

The food is really good. The vast majority of it is probably home made / made by one of the chefs they have. All the staff are friendly and helpful and very accommodating for dogs in the downstairs area. Had the Friday “curry and a pint” offer and it was excellent all round. Would definitely go again, thanks very much.

Hidden away very shabby chic..floorboards and big mirrors. Seating upstairs or down. We booked our table for a Sat Lunch. Staff are friendly and service with a smile. Had the Veggie Burger and school Jam Sponge with pink custard for desert delicious. Friends food was equally fab. Washed down with a Bottle of wine and a Cocktail. Great tunes playing in the background.

The food was really good, good different takes on well known dishes and a very good choice. Service was prompt, professional and attentive. The only negative was the music downstairs, on a Saturday evening in central Southend I suppose it’s to be expected but gentle crooning or decent piped music is one thing but this was like heavy thumping club music in the early evening and out of place and intruded on conversation in our family gathering, it’s the only thing that would make me wary of coming again at least on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was done up very nicely.

A great find. The staff are all friendly and helpful. The restaurant is nicely decorated. The food is cooked fresh and served hot. Absolutely delicious!! There is a 12.5% service charge which I prefer to tip as I feel fit

This was our first time at The Mews, and I was excited that we were going somewhere different. The staff were under a little pressure, but they did have two other tables to serve. We both had the roast dinner, and it was delicious. My husband had roast beef & I had the chicken. There was plenty of vegetables. The staff were very friendly.

Best roast in Southend!! My favourite place to go for dinner/lunch, little bit pricey if you like having drinks and starters so a treat every now and then but it’s well worth the price. Cocktails & deserts are lovely too!! Nice attention to detail & friendly staff 10/10 :)

My daughter and I had lunch at the Mews today. All I can say is that the service and food was absolutely fabulous. Front of house, bar, was a lovely lady who could not of been more helpful and kind. She not only served our drinks but also our food, so very efficient. My daughter and I mixed up our lunch, prawn crackers, dip, duck spring rolls, Bilbao buns etc, we could not fault it. We then decided on desert, I had the passion fruit Eton mess, my daughter the jam sponge, it was all very delicious. As we were leaving we met the Chef, what a delightful, happy chap he is. Full of smiles and so very very likeable, great chef too. I say to the Mews, well done to you for having such wonderful staff and a fabulous chef… long may you reside in Southend.. a little hidden jewel.

Sunday late afternoon - looked a bit empty downstairs, asked on the off chance of a table for 4. They checked with the kitchen and within 10 minutes had us a table upstairs. It was full upstairs, nice buzzy atmosphere. lots of happy faces chatting and eating. A couple of well behaved kids, getting on well with the friendly staff. Had a Thai and 3 roasts (2 duck and beef), absolutely great, full of flavour. Plenty of side vegetables, roast and roasted new potatoes were excellent. Go for the food, the value, the atmosphere, and the friendly staff.

We had already eaten. Called for 1 drink but stayed hours. Had such a good laugh with staff and customers. One of the best pubs you should visit. Querky and wonderful. Cant wait to go back. Was one of the best highlights of Southend on Sea.
