I only wanted a small portion of chips. But I have to say those were some of the best chips I have ever! Super crispy on the outside still soft inside, absolutely perfect balance of salt on them. Very generous portion too. You do have to pay extra if you want sauces on them though.

St. James Fish Bar: Top Marks All Across The Board Had a fantastic experience at St. James Fish Bar last night (February 10th, 2024)! The premises are clean, spacious and really invite you to try the food within. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which always made the experience even better. Onto the food! Their menu is impressively broad for a chip shop which is great if, like me, you like trying new foods. This time, I kept it simple and went for the classic combo of chips and fish, and let me tell you, it was *excellent*. The fish was perfectly cooked – crispy batter, fresh and flaky white fish inside. The chips were just right – golden, fluffy, and not greasy at all. Portion sizes were very generous, too, leaving me feeling happily satisfied. I also bought a double cheeseburger which was very good quality. The vegetables were fresh and the onions were plentiful, whilst the beef was good quality. Feeling a bit adventurous, I also tried their deep-fried Mars bar. The combination may sound unusual but the result was, without a doubt, delicious! The warm, gooey chocolate with the crispy coating was a delightful treat without being sickly or over-indulgent. Honestly, there wasn't a single thing I could fault about my visit to St. James Fish Bar. The food was top-notch, the atmosphere was great, and the service was friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for a delicious and enjoyable meal. I'll definitely be back for more fish and chips (and probably another Mars bar, too!). **Overall rating:** 5 out of 5 stars **Pros:** * Clean, spacious, and inviting atmosphere * Friendly and welcoming staff * Excellent quality food with generous portions * Particularly impressed with the fish and chips, and the deep-fried Mars bar was a tasty treat! **Cons:** * None **Additional notes:** * Would definitely revisit * Would highly recommend to others

I ordered a kebab with chips as takeaway, and it was cold on the inside, although the outside looked cooked. Tasted more jello and had to throw it away. Had better. The chips, on the other hand, were awesome.

Great size pea fritters and burger in batter, all freshly cooked including their chips. Could really teach a fee other chippies a lesson in how to do it right

Come here quite regularly, never been disappointed. Rarely a long wait, food is usually cooked to order and portion sizes are generous. Service with a smile, always aim to go here if I fancy chips.

Highly recommend this chippy. Catered for our quiz night (37 people) on Saturday. Food was ready on time, hot and I had so many comments about how good the fish and chips were! Big thank you to the team at St James Fish Bar.

Great place to go and get fish and chips. Good quality, didn't find it too greasy. Staff very friendly and chatty. Good portion sizes. The wait can be a little long as it's very popular. Definitely would recommend!

Went there about 2 weeks ago, last time it was under the previous owner and really liked the service and food. New owners are very friendly, plus give an excellent service. Also the food was also as good as last time. The chips were as good and the fish was also good. Batter was crunchy not soggy and the fish not wet or too dry. I can understand the revamp, however it seams to have lost a little of its charm, unfortunately it looks the same as any fast food place, a bit clinical. Will definitely use it again, as the food was good.

They do a gluten free menu! We are so happy about this and our coeliac son happily had fish and chips without any ill effect. All chips are cooked in a gluten free fryer and there is a gluten free menu for other items too. Well done St James Fish Bar! We’ll definitely be back!

It was the 1st time I've purchased Fish and Chips from this chippy and I have to say I was very impressed. I did read all the reviews 1st and they were right. Clean, masks worn, fresh fish and chips, they give you large portions and chips lovely and yellow not oily or black bits. Highly recommend, will definitely go back 🙂

One of the best fish and chips (and saveloy) that we've ever had, lovely tasty batter on the fish, great chips and a perfect saveloy (not dry or sat in salt water for hours as we've had at other places). Also great value for money. No other fish and chips place in Soton even comes close. We've found a new favourite takeaway.

This is my local fish and chip shop and I've been coming here for years, and I would always tell people it was the best chippy in town. Since the refurbishment and new ownership I hoped they would live up to their previous quality and they have, and more. The fish is even better, the chips are just as generous, the menu is larger, and the service is quicker. There is no reason to go to another fish and chip shop. This is the best in Southampton.
