I first visited Charlestons 2 years ago while visiting family locally. My Mam and I both had the hot pork rolls with sides of chips and onion rings. All was really enjoyable. My Mam has been again and enjoyed it. On another trip to South Shields today there was only one place I wanted to have lunch at... Charlestons. Mam had a hot beef roll and I went for the chicken one this time... again with chips and onion rings. A pot of tea and a pot of excellent Earl Grey. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient as before. Yes, you wait for your food as it is all freshly cooked and is definitely worth the wait. The buns are soft and a good size, filled with a generous portion of meat and topped with fabulous gravy... all of which was wiped from the plates with the gorgeous chips! Proper fat chips, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside and piping hot. The onion rings are just perfect, thickly cut and coated in thin crisp batter. A nice, bright café where you can sit and watch the world go by. My Mam said it's one of the few places where she's comfortable to eat alone. Only one loo, but it is clean, has a changing area and caters for wheelchairs too. I'm a chef and it is a treat to sit and have proper home cooked tasty food. Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely. Would I go back.... definitely! (posted this on Trip Advisor too)

Nice Sunday lunch , but not much on your plate for the money, lady who served me was ok but not overly welcoming, the atmosphere was a little dull no background music which might be something you might look into

Really good home cooked food. Had the beef dinner and mince and dumplings. Lovely soft beef and a whopper of a dumpling. Reasonably priced too!

Really good homely food, with lots of delicious, traditional options and wonderful service by friendly attentive staff. A little cramped and old fashioned for my taste though, which is the only negative.

No-one seemed to take any notice whilst we "waited to be seated" - no warm greeting, just asked what we wanted and how paying. There was more interest taken in questioning us as to whether we had altered our seating arrangements (which we had not!). Venue/food/drink/cost make it worth a visit, tho' a more friendly and welcoming visit would improve matters greatly.

I'm a regular at Charlestons, staff always warm & welcoming, safety during the pandemic has been exemplary, this diner is always cleaned to a high standard, food is fantastic hence the regularity visits, staff take their roles seriously, ive noticed this cafe does have many rugular customers. Lovely place. It was busy, but food was served promptly and was all hot and delicious. Everything was fresh and price was great too. Located right off the King St/Ocean Rd square, it is very easy to get to. I've passed this place many times, I wish I'd tried here sooner, breakfast was lovely!
