Reviews The Walter Arms

I've seen quite a few changes at the Walters over the last 2 years and the main is that the food menu has changed to cater more towards the restaurant crowd rather than pub food. Prices have gone up quite a lot since I've been coming here but if it keeps the doors open and the staff employed then that's fine. Staff are generally very friendly and accommodating. Great beer garden(s) and lovely open fires in the winter.

This used to be one of my favourite pubs when I lived in Wokingham, some 10 years ago now. Good car parking, outside seating, bar and dining room inside. The pub, for me has lost some of it's charm and is in need of some refurbishment, although comfortable and with a varied menu, I am sure that most dietary needs would be catered for. Stopped in for early evening dinner midweek.

The Walter Arms is in two buildings, the barn and the restaurant. We firstly we went Into the barn and then directed to the restaurant. It was not too busy and we where directed to a table, the table had a big stand and it was awkward to place your feet on the floor. Our waitress straight over and gave us a bottle of water then left us for a few minutes before coming back and taking our drinks order. We asked what the specials were but they did not have any so we opted for the pie of the day and there was steak and ale and chicken ham mushroom so we had one of each and they where very good plenty of fillings. The downside of the evening was the speed of the service after getting our meals we had to ask for the desert menu that came quickly but they never came back to take to ask if we wanted our order we then asked for the bill and it came to us very quickly as if they wanted us to leave as they want to close but it was only about 8.45. But all of the staff where very pleasent

I had the Thai Crispy Pork salad. It’s was really good apart from the chef drizzled balsamic glaze all over it which really spoiled the whole dish. Balsamic vinegar isn’t an ingredient that is used in Thai cooking. A spicy sweet chill sauce would have been sooo much better.

Very pleased with Sunday lunch as a carvery and the usual menu was offered and we like varied dishes. First class service, easy free parking around the back and a nice walk along the adjacent lane made it a lovely experience. We will be back. We did come back and had the fajitas. They were too hot taste-wise which spoilt the flavours. Please ask if cool, medium or very hot needed thanks. WARNING -------- >>> I guess we did not notice on our first visit but the menu prices did NOT include VAT. This was added at the end of the whole bill including drinks etc and bumped up the bill by 20%. In view of this I was unable to afford a decent tip. This is the first time I have had a menu not including VAT. I cannot recommend this pub on that basis as it is totally underhand to to charge that way and gives a feeling of being ripped-off to your customers. It may affect repeat business. Please include VAT in the menu prices and we might comeback.

Found this on a local cycle ride. Lovely pub with an excellent outside area. Perfect for summer. Nice range of beers on tap. Excellent food. Wife went for Katsu burger, which was stunningly good and I went for the old faithful fish and chips. Really good. Very impressed and will definitely return again.

Welcomed in although they were fully booked - shown to Emergency table! Very good food and service and reasonably priced. Recommend the soft boiled Scotch Egg!

Very friendly staff. Good selection of items on menu. Our group had the ribs, bangers and mash, lamb shank and chicken rivatoli(?) The ribs and bangers were very good. Ribs fell off the bone. The chicken and lamb were good, not great. Caramel apple pie was also good.

A nice gastropub. Food is good and varied, though avoid the calamari, which is battered in something resembling extruded polystyrene. Service on this day was unfortunately unreliable.

Maybe when the order is taken the customer should be asked what condiments are required, they can then be brought to the table with cutlery ect. Instead of waiting 10 mins for apple sauce, after the food was served. And told the s&p was over there

Lovely reception for my mum’s wedding! We had our own little space and the place was laid out beautifully. Great food too. Thank you so much to all the staff who helped make this day special.

Good roast dinner but not amazing. The beef was quite fatty, not enough roast potatoes. Veg was nothing special.

Food was perfectly nice for pub grub. Not amazing but good. Would have liked more salad / sandwich choice. May just not have been given that menu.
