wow the Balfour has recently changed their menu and I have to say the food was amazing. and there were lots of new faces among the staff who were all lovely, especially the waitress who served us. it was my birthday and the lovely landlord came over with a free bottle of bubbly. it was so good we returned the next day for Sunday carvery which also didn't disappoint. they have upped their game, and it's definitely worth giving another shot if you were disappointed previously.
We went for lunch here today and it's a pub that I have known all of my life! (Lol) The decor is very fresh and modern but with a homely feel and the landlord was very welcoming! We were staggered at the price (just under £20 for two including a pint of beer and an excellent New Zealand wine) so we went back in the pub to tell them that we had been undercharged only to be told that the lunch "deal" was two meals for £12!!!
We will be going back without doubt!

Just had a delicious meal for two adults (vegetable lasagne) and 2 children ( tricolor penne ) all fully vegan with homemade vegan cheese and flat bread and chips, all really well cooked and Angi the head chef was so helpful when I booked. Great bar staff too, thanks Liam!
Food and drink was absolutely amazing. Staff were really friendly.. deffo worth a visit.
Excellent food, excellent service, great value food, good music and a very relaxed friendly atmosphere.
Great food, great service, new owners & staff very friendly 👍 Will visit often as aunt lives close by and they have live music events 👍
Great friendly welcome by owner and staff. Spacious, clean and a brilliant selection of gins. Will definitely go back.
We stayed at the Balfour Arm for a couple of days. The owner and staff we amazing.
They made us and our two Springer dog’s extremely welcome.
The bedroom were nice with a good en-suite loads of hot water.
The location to Sidmouth was perfect an easy walk either through the street or as one of the staff told up along the river Byes
We had a family meal on Friday 4th August at the start of folk week. 4 adults and 3 children. The food was great value for money. The steak is less than £15 per meal and was cooked beautifully. The service was very good and the band in the garden were great. A fantastic night out, would highly recommend!
Staying in the area, we were struggling last minute to find a place to eat, then we saw good reviews for this place.
On arriving, I wasn't that confident, it is not your usual well polished, everything perfect style of chain pub. Nothing wrong with it, just a touch more down to earth with imperfections, as such I was intrigued to see what the experience was like.
Well, talk about focusing on the right things! For us, with a four legged friend, it was imperative that the pub was dog friendly ... and boy was it ... when I asked if I could bring our lively pup in I was told "of course" and it really felt like everyone was pleased to see him (and us).
We ordered food. Staff were super friendly. They had a baby shower going on, but still, super attentive. Food didn't take long, and it was just good! We both opted for the hunters chicken and it was lovely. We left for the evening and headed off to our camp site.
We talked about this place and realised it was a little gem, and focused on heading back there on Sunday for a roast. The same again if not even better, super attentive staff, and a bloody lovely (good portion) roast. Not long after the chef walked through and after back tracking, brought out a some meat for the dog, treating him like a king.
In reflection this evening, we realised why we liked this place so much, it isn't pretentious, it isn't super polished, it is just relaxed and makes you feel at home, yet they focus on the important bits ... Great service and damn good food.
If you guys read this review, please pass my thanks to the team, but especially to the chef, who I probably didn't thank well enough for serving us decent meals and treating our pup in the way he did. Looking forward to coming back, and a definite recommendation from us!
Staying at The Balfour Arms, a pub with rooms. We had a great time. Both the owners and the team made us feel very comfortable. The food was great too.
I would definitely recommend and i will definitely be going back. X
Back after first visit in November. Food quality remains good and still very good desserts. Servings are less than the last time, so that they are not overwhelming and wasteful. Came away feeling good about the food. However, there's much to be desired with respect to service: rather slow.
Lovely place , great atmosphere and food with lovely friendly staff nothing is too much trouble
Excellent Sunday roast. Plenty of fresh veg. Dessert was fabulous. Staff were lovely. X
Lovely food and lovely staff. Large sized garden which was perfect to let the dog roam around in. Definitely recommend visiting
Brilliant Sunday roast beef dinner and excellent service. Highly recommended
Struggled to find a place to eat as visitors to area and came across this gem. Food was super tasty- homemade steak and ale pie best I have tasted - all at a really reasonable price. Daughter had mushroom pie as a vegetarian- cleared the plate. Very traditional local pub with new publicans who were really hospitable and welcoming. Staff friendly and helpful. I trust this
Place will just go from strength to strength. Give it a try!
Great folk club. I’d personally prefer a still cider but wa hat they had was palatable.
Quick service, new owners' the food has seriously improved. Definitely recommend 👌
Great food and a fantastic live music. Friendly service
