Found this place by accident and what a gem...absolutely excellent, authentic food and a really warm welcome.Would definitely recommend! The takoyaki were amazing!
Firstly the decor is beautiful, you turn down the alley off the square and your greeted this quaint little restaurant with lanterns and tables outside, we were greeted by the staff and taken to a lovely table for two overlooking the church. I've tried a lot of Japanese cuisine in the past and by this was the best I've ever had, from the presentation to the taste the food was incredible and the service was great, highly recommended.
Amazing freshly prepared food, friendly and helpful service and just such a nice relaxed place for dinner. We will definitely be back very soon!
Fantastic visited many times and always been great service and great food ! Love it and recommend to everyone !
Absolutely fabulous food, a must if you are in Shrewsbury. Definitely will be visiting here again!
Excellent food, friendly and efficient service and overall a great meal out. One of my favourite restaurants in Shrewsbury.
Fantastic, authentic Japanese food. Everything is prepared fresh in an open kitchen and the staff will offer guidance if requested. A great addition to the Shrewsbury restaurant scene,
Had a lovely lunch yesterday, staff were very friendly and the food was so tasty and fresh!
It's my favourite restaurant in Shrewbury, the food never dissapoints it's always consistently delicious. We love the takoyaki octopus fritters and King lion sushi roll with mango is our favourite!
The best food iv ever had!! 10/10 to the chefs thank you for having us we will be back!!!
Best sushi I've ever had. Very authentic and Lovely surroundings.
absolute superb evening of excellent food and drinks, really enjoyable
Finally we got to go to Umai. Have been hearing good reviews and we couldn't agree more. Food, service and atmosphere all amazing and gives good positive vibe. And food was really good and authentic. One of the best Japanese restaurant in UK for sure. We had Sake (warm), gyoza chicken, edamame, sushi platter, calamari for starters katsu Don for main course and mochi balls for dessert. We didn't explore much on main course this time, but will be definitely coming back again to try main course. Recommend to book table before going as restaurant was full.
Hard to find combination of great quality and great value - we ordered quite a few plates, all of which were delicious, as well as drinks, and were pleasantly surprised when the bill came back that it wasn’t higher. Fantastic atmosphere, would recommend!
Food and service were 10/10. Unfortunately upon departure there seemed to be a customer acting extremely rude & inconsiderate towards a member of staff - I’d like to say that you were completely undeserving of this and all other customers seemed to be enjoying their night entirely. Thank you for a lovely evening, we shall return😊
It was my first time visiting here tonight. The service is very efficient and friendly. Its a small tucked away restaurant with an intimate dining experience. The food was gorgeous and great value too. Better than a Wagamama I would say. Highly recommended.
The quality of the fish in the Salmon Don was excellent! The prawn tempura had the best tempura batter we have ever had. My friend had the chicken teriyaki box which was apparently delicious
Our first time at Umai and certainly won't be our last. Divine food, wonderfully presented , fresh with lovely tasty ingredients.
The starters/sides/small plates are superb! There was 4 of us and we got 5 of these which was plenty. The main dishes were incredible and good sizes.
The staff are great , friendly and attentive.
Really can't and don't want to find any fault or negative for Umai, it is fantastic!
There are not many places I go to eat and I think "Wow!" at the end of the meal.
Whilst staying overnight for work, I visited on recommendation of a local friend and certainly wasn't disappointed.
I'd not booked a table and despite being quite busy, I was found a table. Service was efficient and very pleasant.
The food is prepared freshly in an open kitchen. There is a large selection on the menu and you may struggle to choose, mainly because there is a great selection. I had miso soup, gyoza and prawn udon noodles, with a side of kimchi. All the food was beautifully presented and very tasty.
I'd definitely visit there again next time I'm in the area. A hidden gem in the town.
Absolutely love this place. I have been coming here for s few years now ad the service is always good. The food is always fresh and tastes fantastic. Its a fairly small place and can get quite bussy durring lunch and in the evenings, reserving a table is advisable but you can always try your luck.
Authentic Sushi in Shrewsbury 🍣🍱
Where do I start with Umai, what a lovely little place! We booked a table for the evening, and we throughly enjoyed our night. Lots to choose from on the menu and everything tasted amazing!
Favourite dish - Takoyaki 🫶🏼
Will most definitely be recommending and returning!
The food is beautiful. Freshly cooked, served at the right temperature. Their sushi is outstanding. For mains, I recommend the Katsu Curry – it's to die for. It has a bit of heat, but nothing noticeable or uncomfortable. Service is friendly and mighty fast. You must try this place.
Love this little restaurant. Really makes you feel you might be in Japan. The location helps with the ambiance. The food was delicious and big portions ❤️
Stumbled upon this place for lunch and we absolutely loved it - a family of four with two smallish children, it was perfect. We will definitely return!
Our first time visiting tonight, and it was wonderful! There is a fast pace and turnover - I'd defintely advise booking a table - but you're not rushed out, and the food is incredible! Can't wait to go back already!!
With so many good restaurants in Shrewsbury it could be difficult choosing a favourite. This amazing hidden gem is simply fantastic! If you're only visiting for a short while, make sure you make it here!
Overall: Excellent place to enjoy a Japanese meal. Nice. Clean. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.
Atmosphere: Nice, feels oriental. Not the most spacious place, but it is big enough.
Cleanliness: Very clean.
Food: Extraordinary. Looks fresh and tastes fresh. One of the best Sushi places I have been to.
Staff: Polite and Professional.
Price: On the high side, but reasonable for a Sushi restaurant.
Only downside is that there is no delivery service available.
Continuing our "Argyle on tour" and celebrating our win over Shrewsbury we eventually made it to this super Japanese restaurant. Hidden away amongst the cobbled streets, it is small and bustling with a good atmosphere. We ordered a couple of starters and a bottle of rose' and settled down to enjoy the atmosphere. Unfortunately, we were continually hassled literally every 2 or 3 minutes by different waitresses asking us to order our main course. It's not pleasant and not good manners and it spoilt our enjoyment and experience. It got so bad we relented and ordered !! And they were delicious. Its just such a shame that they have to pressurise customers that way. The waitresses people skills were not good and they were not courteous. Captive audience I suppose. They didn't even ask if our food was ok. But it was!!.....really delicious
