I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Saracens bar and restaurant in Shirley, and I must say that Candice provided exceptional service throughout the entire experience. From the moment I walked in, she greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel welcome.
Candice was attentive and efficient, ensuring that all my needs were met throughout the meal. She took the time to explain the menu and even made excellent recommendations based on my preferences. It was clear that she had a strong knowledge of the dishes and was passionate about the food being served.
Not only was Candice attentive to me, but she also demonstrated excellent teamwork with her colleagues. She seamlessly coordinated with the kitchen staff and other servers to ensure that all orders were prepared correctly and delivered promptly. Despite being busy, she managed to provide each customer with personalized attention.
What impressed me most about Candice was her genuine friendliness and willingness to go the extra mile. She engaged in pleasant conversation and made me feel like a valued guest. She consistently checked on me to make sure I was satisfied with my meal and offered additional assistance when needed.
Overall, Candice's service at the Saracens bar and restaurant was top-notch. Her attention to detail, knowledge of the menu, and friendly demeanor made the dining experience one of a kind.
Just had Sunday lunch. Plenty of everything so you will need a good appetite. Pleasant service and excellent value. Would highly recommend.
Absolutely beutiful location. Really great staff, friendly and welcoming. We only popped in for a drink, but would reccomend it if you're in the area. It's a bit pricey compared to most pubs in the area, but what price do you put on great memories. Well done guys 👍
Called in for a drink after a walk dog friendly pub, was greeted with a friendly warm welcome by a lovely lady who was the owners mum,we hope to return for a meal in the future would recommend visiting 😊

Black pudding and celeriac remoulade, fish and prawn curry. Both of these were top notch. Washed down with a Tribute, you cannot go wrong. Very impressed, I will most definitely be back.
Had a lovely meal with friends Saturday night, delicious food, and great service, friendly and welcoming pub, will definitely be back
Roast Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious. Chicken supreme was beautiful
Amazing, attentive service. Dog friendly. A hidden luxury. The deli is also fab
The food was very nice just a little on the expensive side the beer was very good but the wine again was a little expensive
Visited the little Village Shop in the Saracens Head car park. What can I say, a hidden little gem with some of the best artisan food I have tried! Had an absolutely delicious bakewell tart and a chunky meaty steak pie! Didn't get chance to visit the pub but I'll definitely be back to try it!
Visited here for the first time, for lunch, today, & was very impressed.
All the food looked to be cooked from scratch, and the ingredients were fresh- it was clearly made with care & attention.
For a starter, I had the smoked mackerel on horseradish waldorf, which was fantastic.
I also snuck a taste of the asparagus soup, which was delicious.
More fish for my main- sea-bass with prawns & garlic butter. The sea-bass, fillet, like the mackerel, was much larger than you get in chain pubs, & it was cooked perfectly. That is, it wasn't overdone.
No room in my belly for dessert, but the pavlova looked very impressive.
The staff were very courteous & attentive.
My only niggles are there was background music playing, not loudly or overly intrusive, but it's there.
Also, it's not brilliant for wheelchair access. It can be done, but you need to open a large wooden gate in the car park, & navigate a short, but steep, slope. Otherwise, there are a few steps at the front & rear.
There's a good range of wine & artisan gin, & a few different ales, & there is a constant real fire on the go.
The atmosphere is smart, yet relaxed.
Decor is a very pleasant mix of modern & traditional.
Will I go back? (2 hour round trip) Definitely.
Highly recommended.
Visited Thursday lunchtime 17.11.2022, enjoyed the set menu. Homemade soup to start, very tasty with homemade poppy seed bread and butter. Fish, chips and peas for the main course with tartar sauce. The fish was beautifully cooked, the batter lovely and crisp and I really enjoyed this. Pudding was creme brulee with a peanut biscuit, very delicious. The service was excellent, very courteous and checked our satisfaction with the food. The value was amazing and I highly recommend the set menu. The meal cost £18 each, very well worth a trip to this little gem of a restaurant just off the A52 between Derby and Ashbourne.
The set menu is not available every day, so your meal could cost more.
Went for my birthday with the hubby. The food was amazing!!! My favourite place would highly recommend !!!
I like the crispy duck, and dessert, and the first dish of king prawns, they are very delicious! The decoration is very tasteful, very good, I like it.
Cosy gastropub in a village five miles outside Ashbourne. Excellent menu and surprisingly generous portions.
Friendly service.
Tables somewhat close together, so not a place for an intimate date. Mostly families and older couples on Friday evening. Book ahead.
Had a wonderful Sunday lunch here at The Saracens today. Went into the deli first and had a browse, great selection of local produce.
Walked into the pub past the kitchen pass, had a chat with Anthony the chef, and were seated near the bar on a great table next to what would be a roaring log burner later in the year. (It was lit inside with a candle which really added to the cosy feel of the place)
After ordering drinks and chatting for a while, we ordered starters and mains and the food was delivered to us within 15 minutes.
All four of us were hugely impressed with our starters, but the Monkfish and King prawn tempura deserves special mention. Light, superb tastes with the guacamole and lime, and perfectly cooked. Roast beef, slightly pink as we love it, (but can be further cooked if you prefer) with all the trimmings, was a perfect September Sunday main. Mediterranean vegetable gnocchi was highly praised as veggie option too.
Great beer, lovely wine selections and the staff were attentive and friendly without being overly hovering.
A lovely meal, and would recommend highly.
Well done the whole team, Anthony, Sally, Olivia, Chris and Stan. Keep it up! We’ll be back 😊😊
