Shropshire Star Review (5Star's). Reviewer's rating:***** Emma Kasprzak enjoys a selection of Indian dishes which were expertly cooked and served
The balti is often considered the UK's national dish, so it was with that in mind that my boyfriend and I set off on a trip to Shifnal.
The Shifnal Balti has been a mainstay of the town's eating out options for many years with both dining in and takeaway meaning it is popular with those wanting a night out as much as with those on their way back from one.
The venue, in Broadway, is easily accessible with on street parking outside and it is neatly divided into two restaurant sections and a takeaway area so that diners can enjoy their food away from people picking up a meal.
The restaurant has been modernised in recent years and the contemporary feel fits in with the new-look menu.
For a Tuesday night the place was fairly busy with a good atmosphere which was helped with Indian music and trendy lighting panels on the wall that change colour.
To whet our appetites we both had a papadom to start with a selection of chutneys and pickles.
Shifnal Balti
The papadoms were light and crispy while the dips were really fresh tasting so with our taste buds tempted we both ordered starters.
I chose the sheek kebab and Andy went for the bahar tandoori - a selection of marinated meats. The portions were just the right size and both came served with a fresh salad.
There was a little wait for our main course but we enjoyed sampling the Indian beer which perfectly complemented the meal while we waited.
For the main course I had the tandoori murghi massala - boneless chicken cooked in minced meat sauce with a tandoori spiced egg served with pilau rice.
Andy opted for the meat shatkora - a balti cooked with citrus fruit which gives a unique sour flavour. The dish originates from Sylhet in Bangladesh.
Murghi massala is my favourite Indian meal and I can easily say the Shifnal balti does the best version I have ever tried.
The sauce is sweet and delicately spiced while the chicken is tender and the egg perfectly complements the meal.
The rice was fragrant and cooked faultlessly and despite feeling full I had to finish as it was so delicious.
Andy said he really enjoyed the main course, which he had with pilau rice. We both tried a bit of each other's meal to see what we thought and I thought his was very tasty with a fresh lemon flavour which was very unusual and morish.
To accompany our meal we shared a garlic nan bread.
The bread was lightly toasted and the garlic was well cooked meaning it was not too overpowering.
Throughout the meal the staff were friendly and attentive and very quick to clear the table and check we were OK for drinks.
Filling
After the meal hot towels were brought out so we could freshen up before having a look at the tempting dessert list.
As the food was so filling we both decided we couldn't manage a whole dessert so opted instead to share one.
We chose pistachio kulfi - an Indian ice-cream. The kulfi was a bit like frozen yoghurt. It had a subtle flavour and was a good way to freshen our palates.
We also had a filter coffee each which was served with cream - a very indulgent end to the meal!
The bill was presented with chocolates and I was given a rose by our waiter. It's these extra touches that makes visiting the restaurant feel like a special occasion.
It would be an ideal venue for a birthday or anniversary celebration.
I am sure we will visit again and I look forward to trying out some of the other tempting dishes on the new menu.

Great Food & Best in Area By Far. Hi there i just wanted to say do not take any notice of Alison on her last review about Shifnal Balti. I am a regular customer of Shifnal Balti over last 10years their food is fantastic infact A+ best in Telford region by far. I have never ever had any problems with the service, i do not now why Alison has been so rude towards them maybe because people are jeolus of their sucess and go other ways putting them down.
Take a look at these reviewshttp://www.shropshirestar.com/tag/shifnal/page/2/

Please judge for yourself why other people reccommend other restaurants on shifnal balti site, come on people its not rocket science.
EXCELLENT. Atmosphere good, Service good.
The food is mouthwatering and excellent
Went for a meal with friends. Good menu with pleanty of choice. Service was friendly and helpful. There is a bar with a nice choice, prices are average for a restaurant.
Service was good, not a long wait at all.
Portion size was OK.
Happy with decor and seating
Food was great and the decor of the restaurant is very nice. Staff was a bit disorganised on numerous occasions. It did take about an hour for the food to come out when the restaurant wasn't really that busy. It is all forgivable as the food was a redeeming feature 4 stars
First time back here since before the pandemic, but still as good as ever. Chicken Tawa was excellent and I've always really liked the lighting and ambience in the restaurant. Hopefully we won't leave it too long before coming back next time.
Good food, however, the service is very slow. Dont think they can cope with capacity. Waited over an hour for main course.
Very busy restaurant, not recommended if you want a quiet meal! Feel is is too cramped personally.
Also check your bill, I had to point out two errors, £5 difference in the total! Could do with air conditioning too on hot days!
A fantastic take away meal from Shifnal Balti. Made the mouths just how my daughter liked it and as a new customer my experience was pleasant and the welcome I revived was second to none.
A new happy customer who will definately return to the "best curry restaurant in Shifnal!"
Turned up late last week but still got served with a smile. Staff were very attentive even at the end of their shift. Food was lovely, highly recommended.
Fist visit to this restaurant last night and the food was really delicious I had the butter chicken main and my husband had the tikka main we could tell lots of time and effort was put into preparing the food as to how fresh it was.
Not too long of a wait time either
Friendly staff and prices are average to most other balti restaurants Will definitely visit again in the future.
Come here fairly regularly, with friends and family - always guarenteed attentive service, fabulous food and a great meal experience!
Amazing food and atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and helpful. I can't recommend a restaurant more, it really was that good. The kids enjoyed their prawn cocktail and we both enjoyed our main meals, the Naan bread was the best we've ever had. Thank you ❣️
The food was very tasty but took a lot longer to get to me, partly because of where I live but had no communication until I rang the 2nd time. Other than that it was good
Very friendly, happy to cater for kids, good service, and enthusiastic. would definitely return for more.
Great food and atmosphere with friendly staff. Top place to eat curry.
Just had a great takeaway
Food was really enjoyable and hot
Delivered on time
