I ate here last weekend and it was very busy with a queue on the stairs. Quite a few people in the queue were upset by this, but I didn't mind.
I'm Coeliac which means I can't have gluten in my food. This means that even the smallest crumb could make me ill - fortunately Mother Hubbards can provide gluten free batter which is cooked in a separate fryer so that there are no cross contamination risks. They even provide gluten free vinegar (without having to ask)! Awesome stuff!
I ordered gluten free fish and chips and it was delicious! The gluten free batter is obviously different to the 'normal' batter but it is one of the best ones I have tried in my several years of eating gluten free food. Unfortunately we didn't stay for starters or pudding so I can't comment on those :(
One thing I will mention for the coeliac/gluten allergy community is that the coke is on tap and they could not confirm if it was safe or not. There person I ate out with had the coke and he guessed at it being a cheaper brand to coca cola so it probably has barley in it. (not confirmed). They do have bottled J20's for safety though :)
I will visit again.
Always consistent, excellent quality, best fish n chips in the country as far as I'm concerned. I always recommend this place to friends etc and they're never disappointed! . I live 60 miles away and make the trip just for these - well worth it.
Best fish and chip restaurant in the world...been several times..every time good service good staff..can’t recommend highly enough..
Lovely gluten free fish and chips, a good portion size, with not too many chips. Prompt and friendly service.

Food gorgeous mam had cod and chips I had steamed fish and salad and my partner had the salmon.it was really busy food wasn't long staff couldn't do enough for you definitely will be back

Beautiful cod & chips, but far too big a serving for us, so unfortunately a lot left on our plates. We always have our fish & chips here, & always leave a lot on the plate, don't know if they would be willing for us to share a plate, & can't pluck up the courage to ask �
Very quick service very clean surroundings excellent food we had the cod and chips and a pot of tea for 2
The fish was cooked perfectly and the batter was very light at tasty

Lucky enough to stumble upon Mother Hubbards while on short holiday break in Scarborough and what a lovely place. It is set upstairs and laid out really nice and clean. Nice relaxed atmosphere and

Food was served freshly done and hot as expected.
Nice crispy batter and chips done in dripping.
I had the haddock done with gluten free flour and wife had the haddock non gluten free, both were the best we have had in Scarborough and I have tried most that do gluten free and to be honest they are nothing special (no flavour).
Mother Hubbards do fish and chips you want to go back again for, this is as nice as what you can find in a Whitby top named chippy.
I now know where to go for my craving when in Scarborough.

Really great to find a place in Scarborough doing gluten free. Others seem to think there don't get asked enough to do it but they don't seem to realise that they would not just miss out on my meal but the other six members of the family too.
Loved the place which was nicely traditional. The fish & chips were excellent and the service first class. On my experience would definitely recommend.

The food makes or breaks a chippy. Here, it was amazing, and plenty of it too. I had a large fish and chips with gravy on the side, and they weren't kidding about the "large" part! The restaurant was busy but the service was swift (yet it did not feel rushed). I asked for tap water which was served in a bottle, free of charge. Being Yorkshire water, it was lovely.
The fish was massive, the batter was crispy but not too thick, and the chips were done to perfection. I barely managed to finish my meal. Throughout, the staff were all smiling and chatting with each other, adding to the friendly atmosphere, but it was clear they were not being distracted. They were at stations such that at least two of them could see every part of the restaurant and respond immediately, an extremely professional operation.
And for all this, my bill came to well under £15. I feel it is an understatement to say that I would recommend this restaurant and I'll definitely be back the next time I come to Scarborough!
SPOTLESS, if this place was on the front you wouldn't get in for the queues.Fish and chips were lovely,service is on the button and they have a lift if you don't like stairs,like chip cafes used to be,definitely going again.Gluten free options as well.
Amazing fish and chips! First class chips and light fluffy batter. No stodgey feeling after. Highly recommend.
Great staff great fish and chips. I live in Europe and we don't get this.... first visit back to UK in 8 years and it was worth the wait.
I spent ages researching Fish and Chip restaurants in Scarborough because last time I visited the town my experience of F&C hadn't been great. I'm glad I did the research this time as Mother Hubbard's was perfect. I can echo the excellent reviews: the food is great, service is prompt and prices are very reasonable. Forget the rest, visit Mother Hubbard's!
Been here twice in as many weeks. Attractive fish and chips served by equally attractive waitress 👍. Definitely worth a visit next time ur in Scarborough. Would recommend.
Possibly the best fish and chips. Prices are keen and portion sizes are generous. Staff are friendly and the place is clean.
