Very cute pub. My husband took me here as a surprise date. We arrived a bit early and there was a mix-up about our reservation but we got that sorted and then they sat us early. We did not get offered water or a drink and had to ask for them to take our order. The menu said that you had to order a 2 or 3 course lunch. We both opted for 2 course and I had the calamari and we both had the nut roast. The calamari was very good, but the roast wasn’t my favorite nut roast I’ve ever had. It was very dense and full of large chunks of nut, which isn’t my personal preference but my husband loved his! My husband decided he did not want dessert because he was too full and if you don’t get the full 2 course, then they just overcharge you for the 1 course. It was fine for us, but just be aware! The amount of food received however was generous, and you won’t be left hungry. Definitely recommend a stop if you’re in the area. It’s a very large pub but still had cute touches. The service was underwhelming but that would be only negative.
Lovely family Sunday lunch had here. There were 10 of us altogether, so we had a separate area with a long table seating us all. The service was very good. The waiter was cheerful, helpful, and friendly. Most had a roast beef lunch, I had the pork loin. The children had the burgers. My mother is a small eater so they allowed her to choose from the kids menu. Everyone said their food was delicious and the meat cooked to how they had ordered it.
Had a lovely Sunday roast with the family.
Food could have been a touch faster and the roast a touch more tender. But overall a solid 4.3.
I wouldn't travel all the way there for the roast alone, however if you're in the area visiting Saffron Walden or Audley End Housr, you can't go wrong.
I'd order fish and chips if I'd do it again.
We had dinner for two. It was quite excellent. A friendly welcome and taken straight to the table with a bottle of water. We shared some pickled anchovies to start and they were very good. For mains we had one venison and one pork cutlet. Both were superbly tasty and cooked to perfection. Service was just right - attentive when wanted but not intrusive. There is a good and interesting wine list, with a large number of choices by the glass. We ate in an old great hall - very atmospheric. Plenty of space between tables too.
So often one is disappointed eating out, but not here. If you want a meal that is a cut above the normal gastropub offer, but still reasonably priced you will not go wrong here. Thoroughly recommended.
Excellent meal, really friendly and helpful staff. 4 of us all had roast dinners and deserts and everything was amazing. Couldn’t fault a single thing! Plus they are dog friendly
What an amazing experience. I don't write reviews, ever! But I felt I had to write this. The venue itself was stunning, the service was faultless. The food however simply stole the show. The love and care that had been taken to create the menu, source the food and prepare such subtle beautifully balanced dishes was greatly appreciated. I don't know who the chief was, but don't ever doubt yourself or your profession, you are a genius. I felt like the food critic at the end of the Pixar movie, Ratatouille. Every mouthful was magical, every dish a revelation. I was incredibly moved. Thank you
We had an incredible time at The Eight Bells. The food was delicious and they were very accommodating to gluten free guests. Our server was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere in the old barn area was comfortable and inspired. Highly recommend a visit.
Very nice charming place with lots of character. Tasty food. We chosen this place randomly but we enjoyed it.
Went today after a lovely day out in the town. I had the fish and chips and they were so light and crisp. They have some fantastic local offerings on tap that are worth travelling for if your into your real ale. Staff are very pleasant and a particular shout out to Jack who gave us excellent customer service with really good local beer knowledge. If your in the area, definitely give them a try 5 🌟
Super Sunday lunch for 4 of us. Roasts and desserts were delicious. Nut roast was the best I've ever had. Chilled water provided as soon as we arrived which was very welcome on such a hot day. Staff and manager were friendly and helpful. Thank you all.
Great experience at Eight Bells for lunch. Food was delicious and very generous portions. Service was friendly and attentive. Would recommend and look forward to returning.
Beautiful pub, brilliant GM, amazing staff. Thank you guys 👌
Took my mum here for her 80th birthday as was about an hours drive for everyone to meet up. We were looking for somewhere a little bit more special and The Eight Bells ticked all the boxes. The restaurant is amazing and so is the food. Service was great and the staff really friendly. Also dog friendly except the restaurant which is handy to know
Lovely old pub which has been morrrnised nicely to the fromt and has the 16th century beamed restaurant area to the rear. It also has a nice enclosed courtyard beer garden to the side which is accessed via the dining room.
There is a large car park to the side as well.
Loved the vintage ambience. The customer service is brilliant. Food is good but not great if you've got an Indian tastebud!! Loved the dessert though!!
