A decent place for both dim sum and dinner. Expecting 30 mins+ waiting time during weekend. Fairly clean and good service. Came as a group of 10 and food came really fast in a expected portion.
My favorite restaurant for Dim Sum and Chinese dinner. They have a large variety of dim sum - I especially like the deep fried triple crab claws, fried sticky rice dumpling with minced meat fillings (the sticky rice is still soft and tender on the inside, not dried like some restaurants), steamed prawn ball on top of fried egg tofu, and fried calamari.
As for dinner, I'd highly recommend their seafood dishes, e.g. crab and fish maw soup, fried oysters in hotpot, Portuguese seafood baked on rice - shrimps, scallops in a delicious curry sauce (no longer on menu but you can request it), lobster in creamy butter sauce, and steamed King Crab with minced garlic!
The customer service is absolutely top notch. The servers periodically come by to check on the food, replace dirty plates and refill teas. Always offers a very pleasant dining experience.

Once a year, a couple of my friends and I meet up with our high school Math tutor for some dim sum at her favourite dim sum restaurant in Richmond, Sun Sui Wah. If you’re not an early bird, reservations after 11:30AM is highly recommended.
We dined here for dinner one evening and I was very impressed - really good quality, reasonably priced and delicious. Canada is quite famous for geoducks and so we wanted to try it out. We were given the option of sashimi or cooked and we chose sauteed with vegetables just to be on the safe side. It was delicious and the geoduck was done to perfection. We also ordered the roasted squab and deep fried sparerib with preserved red bean curd sauce - couldn't fault both dishes. Though it was a weekday night it was really busy and I can now understand why.
Note: The address for Sun Sui Wah is a bit misleading, when standing on Number 3 Road it appears to not exist as all you can see is Aji Toro Japanese Restaurant which is now closed. The entrance is actually on Alexandra Road.
Based on this mornings visit I rate this place 4.5
When we first arrived it was a couple mins before open and there was already a line.
Exactly at opening everyone went inside and were quickly seated. The restaurant was clean, quite nice inside and well lit.
We ordered quite a few things and I was so full and waiting on the durian dumplings. We asked one of the employees walking by if it was still coming and he was so friendly and said he would check right away and have it sent right away and he apologized for it being late (it wasn't even that late, I was just wondering if it was forgotten). He said we could cancel it if we wanted but I said I still wanted it.
I was kinda shocked - most Chinese restaurants like this are never friendly and don't really care about customer service. The service we received here today - was such a nice change. Even during our meal, there were enough staff and if we wanted something like hot sauce - we didn't have to wait forever to flag someone down to get it. There was always servers walking around doing quality checks and seeing if anyone needed anything.
The food: was super yummy! I enjoyed everything I ate (I'll post pics) and the durian dumpling was SO GOOD. Like way too delicious.
I will definitely come back again.
I have never had a chance to try steamed custard buns and was excited when I got to sample them here. I love eggy desserts so I really liked the slightly sweet and salty rich filling. Fish Paste Rice Roll. Fish paste rice rolls are my favourite version of rice rolls to get and I really enjoyed these
Best dimsum place hands down. Great service and wonderful food... definitely recommend this place if you want some good quality dimsum! All fresh dimsum unlike those cheaper restaurants that re-steam all their dimsum
I was pretty surprised myself that I had not been to Sun Sui Wah’s Richmond location, although I was a frequent visitor to their Vancouver location when I was living in the city years ago. I am certainly aware of their reputation of being one of the best fine dining Chinese restaurants in the lower mainland, but just never thought of going there until this Sunday morning, when I tried to think of a different place from our usual dim sum joints. And the dim sum dishes we received at here were nicely prepared and quite delicious.
This is dim sum for beginners, what I would order for non Asians trying the food for the first time. As a food blogger, I enjoy sharing my love of food and all its varieties with others. I especially enjoying being the culinary tour guide to anyone new to any given cuisine. Even more so if the cuisine is one that I am most familiar with, and can actually take the ordering process by the reins. Such was the case with today’s brunch. I would be having dim sum with Caucasians who would be trying Chinese small plates for the first time.
I've always preferred the Richmond location of Sun Sui Wah compared to the other locations. Had another pleasant experience at the Richmond location where most of the dishes were quite well prepared. Loved the crispy chicken and of course the squab! However, the cold cut platter was very weak.
Deep Fried Eggplant with Chill and Garlic. Delicious! Closest I've had to those in Beijing
Excellent Dim Sum. Dim sum is a bit of an informal lunch for me but the servers here are very formal, prompt, professional and courteous. In fact, the curtest person is the "captain." Dishes clear away quickly, tea replenishes quickly and they even refill your cup while they're around. This is more comprehensive for dim sum service than I've seen in a long time.
The beef balls taste smooth even though they're course-ground. the pork dumplings taste equally smooth but there's a little bit more pork fat than I like to see.
The deep fried dumplings don't have a lot of fat but they don't have a lot of meat either. It's a nice taste but I would like to see more meat here.
The shrimp dumplings are absolutely perfect. I love seeing whole shrimp with a combination of shrimp mush as a binder. The wrapper has a nice consistency as well and if I have a complaint, it's that they're too big. Traditionally, you're supposed to eat one dim sum item per bite, but now they're so big, you'd look like a disarticulated snake eating them this way.
I'm normally not a big fan of the bean curd roll; most of them have too much bean curd and not enough stuffing. Sun's rendition is fantastic as there's only enough curd to hold it together, and there's enough bamboo shoot to give each bite a great crunch. The barbecue sauce adds a wonderful dimension.
Rice rolls often taste too greasy but this version has velvety beef and not too much grease to make it smooth. Little chunks of ginger are present but not too overwhelming.
Finally, the Sun makes their pot stickers perfectly, with just enough browning to give a crispy skin. The stuffing tastes wonderful, with or without the vinegar accompaniment.
The only weak dish here comes in the form of the pan fried daikon cake. The cake tastes old and a bit smelly, although it's well fried with just a bit of crispness on the outside.
Good service and great food makes for a great experience. I can't understand why the Captain is so short and miffed that I wanted a copy of the cheque?!
Best Quail in the City!. If you love quail (which any chinese food connoisseur should), try it here, it is by far the best in the city!
Yum dim sum. Good dim sum! a bit more expensive but you get almost everything in dim sum! great variety and delicious food! quite large portions too!
A step above average. One of the better menus ive seen in a chinese restaurant, the food was good and the service was good as well. when inside its your typical large chinese place, check it out if u live in richmond, not going to exactly say its worth the drive if you live in another city
Awesome seafood. King crab, shrimps, fish... yummy!!!
Yum yum dimsum. I have dimsum here and i like this place. i just recently found out that they no longer have the tripe here which makes me sad since i love it. and the wait is never really long and they are super efficient. a way a chinese restaurant should be.
Solid Chinese food. One of my favorite places to go to for Chinese food!
Wait staff is a hit or miss. Highly recommend the yummy roasted squab/small pigeon & 3 way alaskan king crab. It can get expensive especially if you order the king crab (when its in season). They also have these HUGE scallops in the half shell the size of my mobile phone! The ambiance/interior is above average, your typical high end restaurant. with banquet round tables and a busy and
noisy atmosphere.
Will definitely come back!
High quality food all around. Emphasis on fresh ingredients, especially their seafood. They do a great job of bringing the full flavour out. The king crab is must web they are in season, get it steame with garlic sauce. Excellent service as well, you are guaranteed to have a good time their even when they are busy.
Treat us equally. As a non Chinese asian, I always feel myself as a second citizen at a Chinese restaurant, but at Sun Sui Wah, they remember me there and they treat me fair and square. Their shark fin dumpling soup, shrimp chive dumplings, BBQ pork buns are the must. Fast and efficient service, great dim sum deserve the best reviews, however finding a parking space in the prime hour is a bit tricky.
Sun Sui Wah is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in Central Richmond serving Dim Sum and Seafood. They're most known for their Alaska Crab and Roasted Squab. Wanting to avoid the crowds, we decided to go on a Monday morning, which proved to be a wise decision, since the restaurant was only a quarter full! Roasted Squab 3/5 stars Being that this was their signature dish, I was expecting it to be a little more impressive. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, the squab was flavourful, fragrant, and the skin was crispy. However, it lacked punch. Fried Halibut w/Ginger & Green Onion 4/5 stars This was one of the best dishes of our meal! The exterior was nicely fried, without being too heavily battered. The interior was moist and didn't have too many bones. They even included some of the skin, which were super crispy and flavourful! Pan Fried Daikon Cake w/ XO Sauce 4/5 stars I wasn't expecting this to be very good, but I was very impressed with Sun Sui Wah's interpretation! I'm
Both Sun Sui Wah locations are usually busy during Sunday dim sum service and this visit was no different. However, since we were just a party of two, they managed to squeeze us in immediately, bypassing the parties that were waiting for large tables.
The origins of Sun Sui Wah dates decades back in Hong Kong, where their famous squab and business practices succeeded its competitors. With their first location in the lower mainland over twenty years ago, Sun Sui Wah is known for being a higher class Chinese restaurant. I've been here every now and then literally through out my life for weddings, dim sum, or just squab, and have ran into a handful of Asian celebrities. I had been craving Peking Duck for quite some time, and so my boyfriend took me here to satisfy them. But no, no duck today they told me, the same thing they told me months back. Sigh. We settled for some Chinese New Years dishes which included duck lettuce wrap and smoked salmon with jelly fish. We also ordered a squab for my boyfriend's virgin-squab stomach. It was a pretty decent unintended no carb meal. The jelly fish and smoked salmon looked a little old, and came with too generous amounts of greens to eat with it. The squab was a bit cold to me and unimpressive to
A couple of my LA homies were in town for a weekend, they have requested to get dim sum for brunch, so we ended up at Sun Sui Wah in Richmond. We ordered the usual suspects of dim sum, shrimp dumpling, Sui Mai , rice rolls lots of other shrimp based dumplings. My favorite of the day was rice rolls with chinese donuts. The chinese donuts were crispy but soft on the inside, it had a nice chewy texture. I was happy with their version of my favorite dim sum dish. My other favorite of the day was fish maw with shrimp paste. The broth at the bottom of this dish was really nice. My friend ordered a steamed rice ball dish. It was meatball, rolled with rice and steamed. The meatball filling was a lot like the filling in a sui mai. I've never had this dish before, and it liked it a lot. One of the desserts we ordered was tapioca pudding with red bean. I was a disappointed with this dessert actually. It came out luke warm, and the crust was rather soft. The food in general was good but it w
Jenkins and I went to Sun Sui Wah in Richmond the other day with my family for a dim sum brunch. I am a total sucker for dim sum and almost never turn down an invite to dim sum. Sun Sui Wah is pretty popular for dim sum so we went at 11am to avoid the lun
Words that come from the heart stay warm three winters long. ~ Chinese Proverb Panos slept over last night at our place and since we planned to go out for dim sum on this Saturday morning, we brought him along too. Panos has never been to a dim sum place before. We told him stories about eggs dunked in horse urine, chicken feet, beef tendon and all - he took it in good stride and told us he'll try it all! :-) We went to the Sun Sui Wah Restaurant in Richmond just across from the Lansdowne Mall. It's a very busy restaurant, especially in the weekend. We went early just as it opened before the weekend crowds starts streaming in. Dim Sum is a Chinese light meal or brunch, eaten sometime from morning-to-early afternoon with family or friends. Dim sum consists of a wide spectrum of choices, from sweet to salty. It has combination of meat, vegetables, and seafood. It is usually served in a small basket or on a small dish, depending on the type of dim sum. Dim Sum is a Cantonese term, literal
Wow, full flavor dim sum experience. Came early on Sunday and watched the tables fill to capacity. I took a picture of the dishes we ordered if interested. The squab is a specialty item they made fresh today and was just a bit salty with an option for sweet soy or spiced salt dipping. The outer wrap of the dumplings and the rice rolls were tender fresh and complemented the amazing seafood. The service here is stunning, we ordered 8 items but we were visited over 20 times with our plates replaced, tea pot exchanged, the empties cleared and assurances given for properly timed squab. Well done!
So thanks to Netflix and Seth Rogen and David Chang I found this place ! I always wanted to visit Canada and when going to Vancouver was possible I already had this place in mind! It’s in an shopping lot in Richmond area. Plenty of parking but be aware it is busy so chances are you even with a large lot it’ll be packed.
The restaurant is big! Way bigger than I had imagined. It was clean and also had a tv panels against one wall to make a jumbo screen! I was pretty impressed by that. Something I’m not use too at an dim sum spot. The restrooms were also decently sized too to match the restaurant Volume.
It was quite busy for a Thursday afternoon. Nonetheless, we got to ordering a TON of food. Like enough to where you knock out the first round or two or orders and you are left with a table that looks like no one ate off of it. Wow it was good and fresh and the sizes of the dim sum were larger than what I was use to. Quality wise I think the Asian community that lives here can be proud of this place ! I highly recommend it since it’s set up family style for a good time with the family or friends.
The shrimp dumplings and shrimp egg rolls were amongst my favorites ! Make sure to ask for extra soy sauce and condiments !
Service was good! But since they were so busy it was difficult to get the attention of our waiter. It’s probably a good idea to have a laundry list of things for your waiter or waitress to do every time you see them. It’ll make your life easier.
I would recommend if you are able to try this place !
A lot of friends have recommended SSW to me for dim sum, so I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to try it out. We went on the Mother's Day weekend, but we were seated relatively quickly (within 10-20 minutes). The inside is very spacious with lots of tables that are nicely spaced out. However parts of it are also dated (especially the washroom) and look like they could use some reno. There is an expansive menu of different dim sum items, with pricing being on the premium end. Overall the dim sum was good, but I feel it was overhyped as it wasn't as amazing as people made it sound and there were definitely some items that fell short. For instance, the custard lava buns had very little filling. Service was relatively friendly and attentive for a dim sum place.
Great dimsum spot with reasonable prices. You order off a sheet and the food comes out quickly. Service was decent and everything was delicious.
Food wise has some of the best Chinese food in Vancouver. Parking here is a little bit better than some of the other Richmond Chinese food restaurants because the parking lot they have allows for more cars and doesn't have a 1 hour time limit in their parking lot. The restaurant is fairly large and we had to wait 20 minutes for a table which was fine cuz it was busy on a Sunday afternoon at around 12:30 p.m. The actual restaurant was very loud so if you need to want to have a quiet dim some lunch or brunch with the tile floor we found that it accentuated the talking noise very much so and it was fairly difficult to hear each other talk during the time we had as dishes pretty much standard dim sum fair.
We had to eat har Gow, sui Mai, mushroom & green pea shoots, egg custard tarts, vegetable bean curd, beef noodles, and deep fried milk. The deep fried Mil is a dessert with liquid milk on the inside and battered exterior. It tasted exactly how it sounds, not overly sweet while the egg tarts were also some of the best I've had from a dim sum in some time.
We'll come again here as the food is good and we could get a table in Richmond. I'd rate this a 4.5 stars.
Food was decent. I just wish they knew how to fry stuff to make it crispy. The squid was soggy along with the “nest” of the Peking duck. But otherwise the food was tasty. Price is about the same as before. Only real downside is the huge friggin TVs that is super distracting. Service is great though. Ambience is typical of a Chinese restaurant
Good quality dim sum. The menu is a bit small compared to other restaurants I've been to but it sure was delicious. Service was very fast. It can get busy so making reservations is probably a good idea. I really enjoyed the beef tripe. It was different from the typical ginger beef tripe I order at dim sum restaurants. The bean curd rolls and the fried squid were my favourite.
Delicious Yum Cha (Dim Sum). Service was fast and dishes came out hot. The pieces were good size and full of ingredients. Highly recommend going with a couple of foodie friends to be able to try multiple dishes.
Overall, it is a good place to come for dim sum. I tried quite a few dishes and they’re all pretty good. My least favorite is the turnip cake. Turnip cake was not good at all, very disappointed….
Best dim sum experience I've had in a long time. Every dish we ordered was served hot and fresh, presented nicely and of course tasted delicious. Love the sauce trio of hot oil, hot sauce and hot mustard, more dim sum places need to have this. It's a game changer! Sun Sui Wah is a must visit when in Richmond.
Steamed prawn dumplings, steamed pork and shrimp shumai, steamed BBQ pork buns, steamed rice with preserved pork and Chinese sausage, pan fried shrimp and chive cakes, pan fried daikon cakes, deep fried prawn rolls with seaweed, pan fried eggplant stuffed with shrimp paste, and durian glutinous dumplings were delicious. I didn't like the Chinese donut rice rolls. It gets pretty busy here, so I recommend making a reservation.
A popular dim sum place.
It is much more expensive than some other dimsum places. A reservation is recommended since this place gets busy.
service is typical of a dim sum restaurant.
Ate here in early July. Wonderful service. Really really good food. Nice and bright environment. Clean toilet. And not expensive. What else can I say? Go try it.
