Outstanding Mexican Dining Experience. I had an amazing experience at La Carretera. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was tasty with generous portions and reasonable prices. The atmosphere was excellent, and the outdoor seating was wonderful. Perfect for business lunches or family dinners. Highly recommended!
A nice Mexican themed restaurant in downtown Portsmouth. Fresh interior and friendly staff make you feel welcome when you step in.
The enchiladas Mexicano were tasty. Fresh tasting, lightly sauced. My companion enjoyed their vegetarian fajitas.
Took my 11 year old daughter there for dinner. I had the enchiladas super rancheras and an el diablo margarita. My daughter had beef tacos. She really enjoyed her meal. My drink was great, and my enchiladas were okay. The service was prompt and friendly, and as a former food service industry guy, this goes a long way with me.
This place was so good. Waiter was very friendly. Food was served fast and drink were good. 1000% recommend. The outside atmosphere was nice too!
If you can handle the spice, definitely try there Jalapeรฑo margarita, it was awesome. Service was great, food was good. Will visit again.
I have been here numerous times and have always found their food to be good, plentiful, and the service friendly. The lunch fajitas were good and we enjoyed the tacos. The shredded chicken was nice and moist, not dry like we have had at other establishments. The salsa that comes with the complementary chips is also good.
Had the Steak Colorado Burrito. Great sized portion with the rice and beans. Red sauce was quite mild yet still plenty flavorful. Beans had a nice kick to them. We ate outside; such a casual and relaxing atmosphere.
10/10 would recommend! ๐

Came in on a Friday evening- were brought to a table immediately and within a minute had chips and salsa. Our server was very nice and had our drink orders in right away. (A blessing and a curse only in that the margarita was so delicious I had finished one before the food arrived!) The food was delicious- I'll always recommend the chicken chimichangas - you're in for a good time!
June 2022 Update
Much better experience than my earlier review. Drinks were excellent service was excellent and the waitstaff kept us going with chips and salsa! Nice outdoor seating great vibe. Much better this time so I've updated my rating. Things seem to be improving, although in fairness, just went for drinks and snacks this time, not a meal.
Cute Mexican restaurant. Food was very good. Stopped on our way to Maine. Some of the waitstaff were hard to understand and the menu was too extensive. These are small complaints though.

Great service and good food ๐! They take cleaning very seriously with a sanitation station and cleaning a table as soon as customers leave. I got a taste of the disinfectant when a breeze blew in my face while eating:). Umbrellas over the tables and Wifi available.
I ordered the 6 piece chicken wings with the hot sauce. My sinuses paid the price! I had the Steak Mexicana as my main course, but, they forgot the guacamole for my salad. For dessert I had the Xango, with cheesecake filling. Fresh unsweetened tea with lemon, with free refill, was my drink. I enjoyed my meal. Complimentary nachos and salsa were offered.
Though service was friendly and my wait time for my food was reasonable, service was a little slow. But, I definitely didn't feel rushed, but, they forgot to process my Coutopia certificate correctly and took awhile to process my bill.
I enjoyed my view ๐ because I kept marveling at how Portsmouth has changed for the better over the decades. A dog was allowed to sit with its owner at the table and was very popular with fellow patrons. The ๐ was well behaved.
I recommend a visit.
Update: Saturday afternoon, January 2021; I was seated at the bar and service was good. I had the lunch special#5, taco ๐ฎ and a burrito ๐ฏ, both with chicken ๐, with Mexican rice. It tasted good.
At the shift change, both bartenders checked on the customers around the bar. They had a little trouble processing my coupon from the Hippo ๐ฆ Press newspaper ๐ฐ.
Update: Saturday afternoon, May 2021; Outdoor dining has reopened. I ate at the bar. Lunch Special#8, burrito, tostada and Mexican rice ๐พ. A lot of lettuce ๐ฅฌ on the tostada but I enjoyed my lunch. I couldn't finish. Large portion. Wifi was working. Friendly service from the bartender. Refill on drink was offered and accepted. No trouble processing my Hippo ๐ฆ Press coupon.
Really nice bathroom.
Update: Saturday afternoon, August 2021; Lunch Special #3, Taco ๐ฎ, enchilada and Mexican rice. A good lunch. Taco ๐ฎ could use tomato ๐
and lettuce ๐ฅฌ. Service is still good!

I had the tacos Al pastor and the jalapeno margarita. They were good.
The winner was the guac. And the salsa was good too.
Our server was not so great. We asked multiple times for water and even more times for more salsa. There was another waitress that ended up waiting on us more than our guy.
Not the best Mexican I've had but it was pretty good.
The menu is much like most Mexican restaurants I've been to. Even though they were busy our server was attentive and friendly. The outdoor eating area is spacious.
Stopped for a drink as we were working around downtown Portsmouth. Had the spicy margarita which was awesome. Sat outside on the patio and service was great. The fajitas smelled and looked delicious. We will definitely be trying them as it seemed every table order them.
