There really is something quintessentially British about pubs, and whilst the Bellini drinking, city loving part of me absolutely adores a nice trendy bar with a buzzing atmosphere, I do rather have a soft spot for pubs (especially ones with country settings).
The Sportsman pub in Peterston, is a lovely pretty little pub bin an idyllic country village (the drive down really is beautiful). Even better (in my opinion) is that's rather upmarket, so you never have to worry about it getting rowdy, plus kids are most welcome. They also serve some really nice food; the main courses cost between £8-10 and a lot of care is put into preparing the food (unlike many pubs).
I'd highly recommend this place!
Centrally located in the cosy village of Peterstone-super-Ely, about 10 miles from Cardiff city centre, The Sportsmans is both a locals' pub and a destination for countryside lovers. Fields, woods, a river and streams surround the pub, which has its own gardens and terrace seating, where you can eat and drink al fresco.
The pub is Family-run and the main personality is the landlady, Sue, whose enthusiasm and high service ethic has rubbed off on all her young staff. A good menu offers local produce, supplemented by 3 or 4 daily specials; chef will endeavour to cook your special requirements where possible. There is a sensibly-priced wine list with many wines available by the glass.
An altogether most agreeable and recommended destination.
This is the best pub in the area!!
The food is excellent alongside the exemplary service from both waiting and bar staff.
At weekends there are also some Shetland ponies that visit whose owners allow the children to ride.
The pub caters for all and you will not be disappointed!
Beautiful food. Lovely atmosphere and plenty of places to sit inside and out. I would recommend booking. We went on a Sunday afternoon. Sunday lunch was lovely. Starters were amazing!
Stopped off for a bite and pint on the way back from Swansea. Great choice of beers, nice menu with reasonable prices, our food was fresh and very tasty. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The place had recently been painted and looked smart and comfortable. I'd definitely go back again.
Lovely pub great food and selection of drinks
We were greeted warmly - the food was good and the place looks good after its refurbishment after the flood of a year or so ago. Two of us had steaks, done as we'd asked and one had the small portion fish and chips.
Only popped in for a soft drink, until recently I didn't even know it was there. Definitely one to pop back to and try the food. Very nicely decorated and a lovely outdoor seating area.
Our weekday lunch was all freshly prepared and the three of us were happy. I enjoyed my Ciabatta steak sandwich, with the steak cooked medium-rare as requested, and served with salad (substituted for the regular coleslaw) and chips at, I think £8.99. We all agreed the chips were excellent.
It’s good to see the pub operating again, and I would visit again if we were in the area.
I will mention a few points which stop me from giving 5 stars overall.
We spent quite a while studying the extensive menu, so it was a frustrating when the manager (I presume) came to take our orders and we found that all of our first choices were unavailable. I could have put it better when I then suggested that “it might be an idea to tell customers if half the menu is unavailable”, but I got a rather defensive response, when surely the point is correct. No one likes to waste their time choosing and anticipating something that is then unavailable.
I would like to be acknowledged rather more quickly when we entered the pub and stood at the empty bar, even if the person behind the bar is busy doing something for a few minutes.
It would be good if one or two of the draft or keg drinks were produced locally, or in Wales. We have some very decent brewers and cider makers in Cardiff, Glamorgan and RCT.
As someone who no longer drinks alcohol, I hope for at least one low or zero alcohol ale/beer and one apple cider. Guinness zero is pretty good as well. I think there was only one lager and one of those very sweet red fruit ciders available in low alcohol. I mentioned this to the manager who said she was happy to get a few in for next time, which was good to hear, but I said we don’t live near enough to be regulars.
I’d prefer quieter music or preferably none, but others might not agree.
A work in progress, but I wish them well.
Had steak with chips and mushrooms which was fantastic. Found room for the home made dessert (rhubarb and ginger cheesecake) with pistachio ice cream which was amazing. Definitely recommended, thanks guys xx
Very lovely food. Was told of a wait time for a table, which was fine, staff kept us informed all the way through. Waiting staff couldn't have been more helpful, it was nice to see staff that wanted to work (for younger generation especially). Only down side was no mention of alcohol in a sauce but that was quickly rectified with out any issues to the staff. However that being said all food was cooked to order and home cooked. Can not recommend this pub enough will definitely be arranging another visit.
Best Sunday lunch in Cardiff area by far, quality all fresh vegetables pork was great with some delicious crackling, big well done to the staff. Really enjoyed.
A brief visit for a drink and wind down after a 9 miles ramble in the area. The staff are really friendly and on the ball in terms of customer service. A plentiful selection of real ales available straight from the barrel all at £4.10p a pint. A really pleasant pub.
If you like onion rings, amazing food and great staff then this is the place for you. Massive onion rings in the lightest crispy batter are a definite must when you come here. Leave enough room for a pudding as they're pretty darn good too. We will definitely be going again
Lovely Sunday lunch here, but so sorry to be told that they were closing down later that day, having only re-opened under new management a few months ago.
A wonderfully memorable evening here. Staff were hugely welcoming. It was myself, my husband and our little ones (3 and 4 year old). Service was faultless. Good menu range, reasonably priced and delicious food. Their nachos were amazing! Our first visit and certainly won't be our last.
Lovely pub and friendly staff, food was tasty and excellent quality, will return again soon.
Been twice in last 5weeks each time we ad roast dinner lamb or beef Been fantastic everything was cooked lovely both times definitely be going again
Lovely country pub pleasant staff food was great and good value for money as well.
Only off putting thing was one of the locals leaving the bar to go across the road and urinate in one of the houses hedges when he was only feet away from the pubs toilets not nice at all and really no need either. But this is not the pub or staffs problem really.
Lovely pub with great staff and good service provided, lovely big beer garden with tent area also to protect from the sun. Also dog friendly! Food is good quality, well cooked and presented
