What a lovely, dog friendly find on our way passing through Penrith. Set in a sleepy village, this isn't your average pub grub! The food is delicious, the staff are accommodating and very nice. Large car park, nice outdoor area as well as interior decor & loos. Not only did the food taste amazing but looks gorgeous. It did take quite a while but well worth the wait. Also while the garden is beautiful just be wary of wasps in the summer!
Melanie and the other staff were very welcoming and friendly the food was absolutely delightful best Christmas Dinner every, only slight issue was out side to the car park very dark hard to see but overall the place is outstanding, ps best chips ever ๐๐๐๐๐๐

Well worth a visit after a morning walking in Ulllswater area - delicious high quality food and I thought 2 courses at ยฃ20 was excellent value given that we are talking high end restaurant equivalent food here.
Relaxed and friendly atmosphere - dog was made very welcome.give it a visit you will not be disappointed.

Brilliant pub. We popped in expecting to just have a drink but after seeing the menu we could not resist staying for food.
I had the beef and my partner had the halibut. The beef was cooked to perfection and beautifully rich, all parts of the dish worked so well together. The halibut was also packed with flavour and the surprise star of the show was the fried greens which were phenomenal.
The drinks were also much cheaper than I would have expected with such high quality food.
We were sat in the lounge and it was just what you want from a country pub. Nice low lighting making it feel cosy and welcoming.
The staff were all very welcoming and could not have been more helpful considering we had no booking and they were super busy during their opening week.
We are already making plans to come back and try more of the menu.
Wow! What a find! The Gate has recently re-opened and we were absolutely blown away by the food. Much better than any food offered in our hotel (Another Place). Reasonably priced. Lovely service from the bar staff. The food was outstanding and something I would expect at a much fancier restaurant. The Gate delivers this, but maintains its Pub atmosphere - a must visit.
Generally we had a very nice time. Staff friendly and helpful. Meal was mostly very good but they should remember that not everyone likes beef rare! An option for otherwise would have been appreciated.
The food was great, some oddities, wine by the glass is delivered in a small carafe that you pour into your glass I didn't get the point. (bread that came with the cheese board was burnt) however I really recommend you get a great lunch ยฃ20 two courses or ยฃ25 for three Fantastic value try it you won't be disappointed ๐โค๏ธ
This pub has high ambitions for its food. Dishes are complicated and presentation is excellent. The โpork scratchingsโ nibble was spectacular. My wifeโs venison dish was excellent but my beef dish was poor with beef which was rare but dry (probably kept warm too long) and sides which lacked the advertised truffle and which did not seem to have any connection with either the beef or each other.
The wine list was uninteresting.
But hugely better than a normal pub.
Wonderful pub. Great, friendly and chatty staff who know their stuff.
Food was gorgeous, has Sunday dinner and the beef was lovely.
Nice drinks, good pints and gins.

Very cosy gastropub. Good service and food. Not cheap but not too expensive either. Menu is limited in range but what they offer they can cook. Do not forget to order a side of their triple fried chips! They are among the best you will ever eat. Lovely and friendly waiting staff too. Recommended.
Came in for a drink on Thursday night, its been closed for a long while but so glad it's reopened, Tom made us feel so welcome we ended up getting food. Would recommend to anyone. Food was excellent, service was amazing and made a lovely change that the manager took the time to make us feel welcome
Came a couple of weeks ago and the food was delicious.The staff are lovely and accommodating.We are going back this evening and I know none of us will be disappointed..

Went for Sunday dinner with the family. Great choice for kids food also. Staff were amazing with my little girl made the experience worth while. Will be back again asap!
Myself and my partner stopped by this pub over the weekend.. new management is fantastic, staff very welcoming and polite ... food was delicious .. would highly recommend and definately going back again. Credit to Tom the manager too hes turned this pub into a great pub to visit! Sam And Shaun x
Just had an excellent, late meal here (red pepper and tomato soup, then lasagne). The food my hotel had been serving us was poor, especially for the price charged and I needed to get out to have some good food at sensible prices. This fitted the bill perfectly.
