Absolutely first class meal. Good range of options on the menu and specials board. Given the excellence of the food, we felt the prices were reasonable. I had prawns in garlic butter to start followed by braised ox cheeks and both courses were delicious. The cheesecake dessert was a lovely homemade affair. My wife had the cod goujons, lamb curry and chocolate brownie and thought all three as excellent.
Delicious food and delectable ambience. This was our first family visit to this pub and I was extremely impressed. Very family friendly the staff are courteous Freindly and dependable. Food was excellent and arrived on time. Simply an excellent find on our travels.
Fabulous place, delicious food. Our server was a young girl, forget her name but she was brilliant. We had a toddler and a small dog. They have a dog friendly pub and a dog friendly place to dine. Highly recommended. We were camping in lazonby so 5 mn drive away. Food nice and hot.
Lovely food and friendly staff
Had a lovely evening meal with my hubby. Both meals was great. I'm gluten and dairy free. I had fish chips and peas. They're where the best, I've ever had. The batter was light crispy and home made chips the best. Steak with all trimming chip was lovely to. The presentation was spot on. The staff where friendly. Totally recommended to family and friends.
This is my favourite restaurant and I wish we lived closer as I would be eating there several times a week. Fantastic large menu and have tried many dishes from it and never been disappointed. Just a fantastic chef!!! The steaks are to die for. Delicious. As are the pizzas. Excellent kids menu too. Nothing is too expensive.
Very good, just a slightly odd atmosphere but loads of tourists and locals all having a good meal so probably just me and the Mrs being stuck in the cold corner. Food all very tasty, hot and what you would expect. Pricing, quality and prep all perfect. Would recommend
The food was very, very tasty. I had calamari & chorizo starter from the specials board and I loved it. I then had the chicken, bacon & black pudding hash, it was delicious. The staff were great, really friendly. Can't wait to visit again.
Lovely food served here by lovely staff who made us feel very welcome..a very nice atmosphere we went more than once
Friendly staff.
Varied menu.
As we have a dog we weren't allowed to eat inside so had to sit on a side table.
This was a shame as would have stayed and had desserts and more drinks but the bench wasn't that comfortable.
Amazing food. Cassoulet is gigantic and so tasty .Staff are lovely ..thank you !
Had a lovely meal, with great service. The chef even came out to speak to my mum, who is celiac, to discuss her requirements. She really enjoyed her pizza

Utterly amazing, world class food in a quaint pub, at an affordable price.
It’s rare in the UK to find world class food, and I mean top notch, 5 star hotel standard dinning in a beautiful, quaint and friendly pub.
The food would not be out of place in some of the best restaurants in London, Paris, New York or anywhere you care to mention. Every mouthful of every dish we shared made hairs on the back of our neck stand-up. Throughout all our travels- this is the best food we have ever tasted. It has to be the UK’s best culinary secret. The staff were amazing as well and so was the wine and beer. I recommend everyone to visit this pub if you are ever visiting the Lake District - in fact it is an excuse to visit the Lake District!
Even though we only stepped in for a pint, the atmosphere of the place is typical "village English". Cask and refrigerated ales on tap, the ubiquitous old fireplace with oak mantel, and laid back attitude.
Co-beer drinker, who has been here and eaten on numerous occasions, said that the chef/cook really knows his stuff and provides an excellent repast. I hope to experience that the next time I'm by!
The pub is located in the village of Kirkoswald and is easy to get to by car. I'm not sure of there's a bus service but wouldn't be surprised if there is as it's a fairly large town by northern England standards. I'd estimate maybe 700-1000 people. I'm including a snap of the menu that was offered that day. Definitely worth a look!
