Visited the Boot and shoe twice during my week staying at nearby Whitbarow village. The first visit was a busy Sunday afternoon when they have live music on.. Lovely couple of hours chatting with other holiday makers, enjoying the music and the Rhubarb Gin! Returned to partake of the food early Friday evening (booked a table which is advisable as its a small, very popular pub) having seen the food on our first visit. The menu is not massive choice but the food is good quality and home cooked.. The Lasagne portion is huge and so tasty and the steak burger took some beating! Thoroughly enjoyed the food but sadly had no room for dessert.. Which also looked amazing! The staff are very friendly and welcoming and I would definitely recommend a visit (including food) to anyone visiting the area!
Had a lovely meal here last night, family, dog and just generally a people friendly place. We were staying in a cabin nearby so read the great reviews on here and TripAdvisor so booked a table in the bar area, good job as all tables were booked for an 18.00 and then a 19.30 sitting. Fantastic olde world pub that's been around since 1500s, cosy bar area that's dog friendly and some of the most customer friendly bar and waiting staff I've ever come across, really made us feel welcome, as did the locals, really friendly.
Food was cooked fresh, only waited 20mins though and came hot and tasted excellent, great choice for all tastes including meat-eaters, fussy eaters, vegetarian, Grill Menu and specials, even the kids menu looked appealing. Deserts were to die for, tiramisu Creme brûlée was as good as I've eaten anywhere and I mean that. Out the back is a superb beer garden with huge barbecue area, it must be brilliant on a hot summers day, they also have live music most weekends and they do B&B. Can't fault this place and its worth a detour off the M6 as only 10mins from jct 40.
THANK YOU we will be back next time we are in the area.
Fantastic food in a lovely setting. Quirky Tarzan memorabilia lined the walls, lovely beer garden out the back where the kids played giant Jenga. Helpful friendly staff that sorted a space for our party of 16 at short notice on a bank holiday Monday. I can thoroughly recommend the sandwiches and chips, but everyone's food looked lovely.
A hidden gem.
Couldn't recommend this place enough!! Visited earlier with my parter, not from the area but due to the high ratings this place got we decided to have a look. Lovely homely pub, great food and great atmosphere. Woman behind the bar maggie couldnt have been more attentive she was absolutely lovely! Helped us get a local taxi driver to drive us back to our lodge for nearly half the price of the penrith taxi. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area
Lovely friendly pub with a good mix of locals and holidaymakers. The food was VERY good and I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. Look out for a regular, Merk (I think that was his name ) The Border Terrier, I was very slightly besotted with him
We booked up for our anniversary , the staff we great and the food fantastic. The atmosphere is so welcoming. Will definitely be visiting again and recommend to family and friends
11 of us ate here for my mums 70th whilst on holiday, also with our dog. All 11 of us loved our meals and were so impressed with the service and food and drink.
Lovely village pub.
Great place very homely n Cosy pub with lots of character lovely open fire, fabulous home cooked food reasonable priced, friendly staff with great service and atmosphere loved the live band. Well worth a visit .
Beautiful old pub in a picture postcard village. Great food, fine beer, lovely people, and top live music on Sundays.
What's not to like?!
The Boot and Shoe was a 200 meter from my B&B at Stanford house and was well worth the effort. Epic treks deserve epic food. I chose the Lamb Henry. It was epic! I then had sticky toffee pudding. All washed down with two Lancashire Blondes. I would definitely go back. I just wouldn't have lunch before going, and probably wouldn't worry too much about breakfast the next morning either.
The Boot and Shoe is fantastic. Great food and drink. Excellent service and very friendly staff. Have eaten here many times and the food is always wonderful. Wish it was my local.
Great food, staff and atmosphere. After a long day in the saddle this is the place to visit.
Eaten here the last 2 days .the food is first class. Warm and friendly staff highly recommend to anyone to call in here
Spent a lovely afternoon here on Sunday 26th Feb 17 . Although this is a little place the custom and atmospher is massive 😀Live music and the food was amazing . Will defiantly visit again when in area
Lovely quaint pub with a mixture of holiday makers and locals. Everyone is very friendly and the food was gorgeous. Would definitely come back if I'm ever back this way xxx
Friendly staff (family run), very good food (evening meals and breakfast) & well looked after beer.
We were on holiday and booked in for Sunday lunch, really beautiful meal and the pudding was delicious. We went back for an evening meal on the last day of our holiday and had the haddock chips and mushy peas, again the standard was really high, another scrumpy meal.
I cant rate this pub highly enough, it's in a very pretty village, the food is amazing, the staff are friendly, it's dog friendly and got a lovely atmosphere, if you're close to Greystoke pop in!!
Thanks to all the staff for 2 lovely visits.
Lovely, welcoming staff in this cosy pub. Traditional pub food which was very tasty. The bedrooms were nice but we would have preferred a bedside table and lamp on both sides of the beds and plenty more plug sockets. There was also some conflicting information about the WiFi connection. The beer garden was lovely. Dog-friendly and separate kids' play area.
Brilliant food, I had the fish and chips and it was honestly probably my favourite I've had.
Mrs had Cumberland sausage and mash. And even that wasn't boring
Only issue would probably be space as it's such a tight pub. But definitely worth the visit as the size can't be helped. Lovely inside
Had dinner Friday night steak was beautiful. As we had just arrived in Cumbria from Durham, We weren't booked in but they squeezed us in last minute also had lemon meringue cheesecake, gorgeous. Staff were friendly and we booked to go back on the Sunday for lunch. We stayed around for the afternoon entertainment which was great.
Good friendly atmosphere.
Lovely food, nice and friendly staff, great atmosphere. Just a really nice country pub. Watched a band on Sunday, live music too so what else do you want? Will definitely come back.
Proper cosy and tasty Sunday lunch. Staff were really friendly and attentive. Glad we dodged the tourists around Ullswater and went here.
Great pub and food with a great atmosphere.
Only gave the rooms three stars because of the showers in a couple of the rooms but if you prefer a bath it makes no difference
Visited the Boot and Shoe on Burns night Had a brilliant night there , the food was first class , staff were very welcoming and professional.
Ben and Jan , our hosts are 2 of the nicest people you could wish to meet .
Compliments must go to the Chef who produced a beautiful 3 course meal for the occasion.
To everyone who had a hand in making the evening a success, thank you , hope to see you again in the not too far distant future .
Roland & Anne.
Fantastic Sunday lunch, choice of 2 meats plus veggie option plus starters, puddings and other menu items. Traditional interior, not a modern designer gastro pub. Plenty of locals and visitors. Busy on a Sunday, pretty much have to book. Live music Sunday late afternoon.
Visited for food whilst on holiday and definitely recommend 👌
Food was delicious 😋 big portions and well presented. Staff/owners were really welcoming and friendly. We stayed for quiz which was great fun. Thanks for a great evening!!
