Outstanding experience from start to finish. I took my son for his 16th birthday to the cookery demonstration as he is an aspiring chef. Each dish was expertly explained to us and you could clearly see the demonstration from where you were sat in the restaurant.
The food was incredible and the service was brilliant! Each course was better than the next and paired with the perfect wine.
The staff ensured our water glasses were never empty.
Had the pleasure of meeting chef James Sommerin who took the time to talk with us and give my son some insight into life as a chef. Highly recommended. Will be returning!
Don't be fooled by the understated ambience of this little gem of a restaurant as what you will experience once sat down is nothing short of the most exceptional gastronomic journey you could ever imagine.
On arrival we were warmly greeted by the waiting staff and shown to our table. The restaurant is small but wonderfully intimate - further enhanced by the close proximity to the open-plan kitchen where you can watch every plate of food being prepared. The service throughout our meal was spot on - attentive without being stuffy and overly formal.
We ordered the surprise 8 course tasting menu - both of us are vegetarian and James was more than happy to cater for this. Each course was immaculately presented without being pretentious and beautifully described to us. More importantly every dish was exquisitely flavoured. James managed to balance richness and depth of flavour whilst still achieving an incredible lightness to his food. The produce (seasonal of course) was treated with respect and techniques were applied intelligently to achieve the optimum flavour. It's hard to pick a favourite dish as every one was a stand-out in its own right but if I was forced to pick I would say these three were highlights: carrot and tarragon; pumpkin and goats cheese; parsnip and beetroot. The quality of the wine was also superb.
Perhaps what made this eating experience truly special was the fact that James and daughter Georgia serve much of the food themselves and it was such a privilege to talk to them about their passion for what they do. This is not a cheap meal out by any stretch but if you are looking for a truly unforgettable restaurant experience that will be the highlight of your year then this most definitely will tick that box!
Was unsure what to make of the restaurant when we arrived outside, withthe black curtains shielding the inside from prying eyes. Once inside we were taken back to what could be described as a theatre style inside, with the cosy 8 tables all facing the small open plan kitchen.
We had the 8 course tasting menu, but expect to have a few other surprises. We also had the wine flight, which complemented the food amazingly well.
The tastes within each meal were amazing and how he can not have 2 stars is beyond me.
If you go be prepared to have an outstanding experience and taste sensation with James himself coming to your table with dishes.
Just one word overall from us, spectacular.
Exceptional fine dining experience. Every dish was beautifully presented. The wine pairings were smooth and delicious. I strongly recommend having the optional cheese board. Staff were all friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
We had a fantastic evening.
Faultless. Delicious, innovative. Theatre.
They even had the best products - Goodwash - in the bathroom!
Came to ‘Home’ for Weekday lunch and it did not disappoint. I had the suprise vegetarian menu and every course was delicious and inventive, the chef obviously cares that vegetarians/vegans dont miss out on the same experience as meat eaters as the food was beautifully presented. The restaurant is small with around 10 tables and features an open plan kitchen. Watching the small team of chefs was an experience in itself, it was so chilled, they made everything seem effortless and the service was faultless. A very special experience, worth every penny.
Sadly I am nowhere near eloquent enough to do this fine dinning establishment any justice. Suffice it to say that we are already looking forward to our next visit. Chefs James and Georgina run a tight ship that serves up the most exquisitely delicious food that is both appealing to the eye and taste buds. They were also warm and engaging and the whole night felt world class. My faith in the culinary scene in Cardiff has been restored.
Such an amazing evening at Home. The food was sensational, the atmosphere was brilliant and the staff were insanely good! The whole evening felt so intimate and personal, especially when James came over to our table for a chat at the end of the meal. Out of the Michelin star restaurants I’ve visited, this is by far the best. We can’t wait to visit again!
Home is more than fine dining, it is an experience. The only way I can adequately describe it is disappearing into the rabbit hole for a three to four hour delve into a twist on comfort food.
From the road home looks very unassuming, and to be honest we almost missed the entrance from the pavement. A "go home" button push later and we were guided into the elegantly designed modern interior, purposefully crafted to feel like you are walking into a friends (extremely well designed) dining room.
The carpet was fluffy, curtains obscure the road and outside noise, a small platform for tonight's performance sits in front of you, where you can see James and his family working together on preparing the appetisers. The atmosphere is only what u could describe as comfy, personable and calm.
The appetisers were delicious and laid the groundwork for the expected quality of the night ahead. Flavours and ingredients that complement eachother are purposefully arranged in a chorus of taste. Following that was course after course of the finest that Wales offers, and did not disappointed. Fresh lava bread perfectly baked so that it's still warm in the middle, beetroot salad with feta balancing the taste to a sweet and tart, salty and creamy flavour combination.
I won't mention all of the dishes as its up to the reader to truly experience what I can't put into words, but of specific highlights were the potato dish, a decadent 2 hour confit of a potato in thyme butter, topped with beautifully Crispy chicken skin and a smooth rich jous. James described it as Sunday dinner in a bowl and I couldn't agree more.
The second dish that stood out for me was the pea ravioli, an amazing mix of fresh peas with a perfectly cooked ravioli. It was an excellent breakoff point for the rich dishes surrounding it. I have never had such a fresh tasting pasta in my life.
The service throughout was incredible, attentive in all the right ways, subtle things such as refolding your napkin when you have stood up go a long way to making the overall experience feel premium. The communication from James and Georgia on the courses and even the informal chats inbetween truly make this a personal experience.
I can see why home has been awarded a mitchelin star. I hope they continue to ascend in stars in the future.
An incredible experience. 100% recommend. Was blown away by both quality of food and service. We did the 4 course tasting menu but with canapes and bread etc it felt like you got so much! We upgraded and added a cheese course also as it looked too good to decline! Look forward to coming back for the next menu!
