It might be easy to miss Paddyfields as it looks a bit inconspicuous on the outside and is not as widely lauded as some of the other Chinese restaurants in Oxford but if you are looking for an economical yet filling meal that will leave you thinking about it for days this restaurant is a must -try!
Their menu can be a bit disorienting as there are so many options but the staff are very helpful and will give you recommendations and answer any questions. If you are going as a group it’s a good idea if everyone orders what they find appealing and you then share as then everyone will get a chance to try out more menu items.
We went as a group of four and ordered a shredded crispy duck, pork belly hot pot, a beef in oyster sauce sizzle, black bean beef noodles, mixed meat dumplings, glutinous rice and a spicy sour soup. There was literally not a single dish that we disliked from the ones we ordered, everything was astonishingly delicious, it was prepared super quickly and the staff served it with a lot of care and attention to detail.
The price in the end was £24 per person but considering we definitely ordered more than we could eat, I’d say you can get an amazing meal here for about £20 a head.
Again I would like to emphasise that the staff was really kind and quick with the service and even patiently waited for us to finish our meal even as they were starting to close the restaurant.
Overall brilliant food and excellent service for a very reasonable price, 5⭐️ from me
You wouldn’t notice it from the outside but it’s a secret gem! Good atmosphere - the quiet music and decorations. Most importantly food served hot, generous portions and very delicious. My personal favourite - crispy lamb hot and spicy vermicelli soup (on the photo) Other recommendations - sizzling beef, mapo tofu, milk tea and hot pot. If you like Chinese food, spicy food or just want to try something different - visit this place
August 2018
At that time I was so hungry, confused what to eat. Found a chinese food restaurant, without thinking long, entered the resto.
+ big portion with autentic szechuan taste, worth to try in Oxford. Close with Said Business School, Oxford Uni.
- No parking area for a car. You must park in somewhere.
Safest place to eat in Oxford! I was amazed with COVID safety measures!! Ultra fast temperature check at the entrance and each table is separated by safety screen. All staff wearing masks and gloves and steam stabilized cutlery!! Amazing food as well!!
Quite good services but a bit disappointing on shrimp dishes personally.
Overall is a great dinning place.
Enjoyed a lovely meal with a few friends last night. The service was excellent, staff were friendly and helpful.
With the exception on one unidentified dish the food was fantastic.
As a real bonus my friends bet me £50 that i wouldn't eat the entire unidentified dish of onion and hot salty snot. I'm pleased to report that I'm now £50 richer.
The table has a spinning center, thought that was a nice touch.
Absolutely the Best Chinese restaurant we have ever eaten at. Their covid preparations are excellent, possibly the best in the city. Attentive staff, huge menu and comfortable atmosphere. We're sad we only found this restaurant on our last night in Oxford.
This place is wonderful! Some really delicious and hard-to-find traditional Chinese dishes.
The staff is fantastic and friendly, very courteous. They clearly put a huge amount of work into making the place Covid safe.
I will definitely be back! Thanks Paddyfields!!
I visited the place on 20/92020. I'm delighted by their excellent service and their measures taken on COVID-19 protection is the best I've seen in a restaurant. The menu offers great varieties in Cantonese cuisine. We have ordered the Lamb & bean curd skin hot pot, Cantonese roast pork, Fujian fired rice are all excellent !! And their Cantonese Dim Sum is absolutely their trump card. We ordered steam shrimp rice rolls, shrimp dumpling and xiao mi, they are even better than I can find in Hong Kong. Finally, hospitality of the Manager (boss) is also heart warming. Highly recommend!
Genuinely cannot praise this place enough.
Before I sat down, I was met with an automatic temperature checker and a full walk-through sanitiser, followed by hand-sanitiser. All tables are surrounded by transparent plexiglass and all staff were constantly wearing masks, being very cautious with distance and ensuring all tables were thoroughly cleaned (not just wiped) between customers. As far as Covid protection goes, Paddyfields has done the most that I've seen a restaurant do, which is very reassuring.
I went for hotpot, which was excellent. The dishes were diverse, the portions were plentiful the meat was high quality, especially for the given price! The seafood in particular was lovely, so I'd definitely recommend. I was able to enjoy a range of differing dishes which were thoroughly enjoyed.
My host made me feel incredibly welcome, having conversations where possible, but made sure not to be intrusive of the meal.
Overall, a great experience and I'll be back very soon.
Brilliant food - fast and the taste is amazing! The service is also fast and friendly. Overall atmosphere is lovely. Definitely recommend. Do not be put off by the appearance out front, this does not reflect the quality you find inside!
If you are looking for authentic Cantonese food come here.
If you have had trouble finding proper Dimsum in the UK come here
I ate delicious Dimsum but it was a bit pricier than I am used to spending on Dimsum.
Service was super friendly and helpful.
10/10 experience!
As soon as you go in, there is an automatic temperature checker and full body sanitiser booth/gateway to step into, then hand sanitiser. The staff showed us to our table which felt like it’s own personal booth with clear screens all sides. All the staff were consistently wearing masks properly. Any extra utensils which were bought over were visibly cleaned before being handed over and once other tables were vacated, staff took great measures in disinfecting (not just cleaning!) the tables and chairs. Going above and beyond in terms of Covid security.
I went for hotpot which was super. Big portions of fresh food. I was surprised by the quality of the food for the price charged (~£23pp on a weekend). Unlike most places, you can also reorder more plates of food if required. For extra money, can order fancier seafood for the hotpot like crab and sea bass. Freshly fried yaotiu too. Also a big array of dipping sauce items which most places charge extra for.
Staff were very attentive and friendly. They speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
Also had a really nice iced lemon tea - not like a normal lemon tea, was much much nicer!
Overall would definitely come again. Thank you 🥰
