Reviews The Grand Cafe

The Grand Cafe is the oldest coffee shop in England established in 1650 and situated in the heart of Oxford city. I have been there for late morning breakfast during my Oxford tour and had sandwiches with friends. This is a very small cafe but well decorated.

Good

The cakes are all excellent coffee and others are very well chosen and the service very pro.
Only downside is very noisy perhaps there are too many tables in a limited space.
Unlike a French tea room, the doors are open to the person without a tie

Aside from being a historic venue, as it claims to be the oldest coffee house in England, The Grand Cafe is an opulent destination with a variety of teas, desserts and regular meals as well.

The mille feuille I tasted at the cafe was not very impressive, especially since the filling was had more cheese than egg in it. It feels as if this is an unorthodox recipe.

The teas did, however, impress me. I had a go at Darjeeling, Gunpowder Green Tea (very smoky aroma), and Earl Grey. These are the only reason for which I'll return.

English breakfast, Afternoon tea, salmon and eggs, and a flat white. Not together of course! These are some of the reasons to visit the Grand Cafe.

I am a sucker for scones and clotted cream and despite being intolerant I managed to sneak a bite from my brother in laws plate. Divine warm scones without being too "dry", cold cream and jam to balance it out.. Heaven in one bite!

I ordered a flat white and they made the cutest design of a flower for me.. Seems like they're big on latte art.

I'm no tourist in Oxford so let's not mention the prices of tea and scones😲. A lovely atmosphere full of quiet talking and music. The welcome was OK. I really enjoyed my scones with cream dripping in gold and diamonds to make the price fit. Lol. Kidding. Sunday relaxing tea and scones.. lovely. Bring your grannies or mum, girlfriend or boyfriend. Or just solo like me. The young lady who served me was great. Well done to her. Down to earth with a smile.

Positive experience overall. The interior design is cute. The vegan cake I ordered wasn’t really impressive but the tea was pretty good. Staff members were nice and attentive.

It was a beautiful high tea experience. The service team were friendly and helpful and the food were delicious. My favourite was the lemon posset, it was sharp and delicious at the same time.

Interesting to see how come this place has got such a bad review - but I suppose this place might be overpriced for Oxford locals. I am writing this as a tourist who visited from London, and I got to be honest, there was nothing to complain about. Although there was quite a bit of review complaining about awful service, my experience there was just as pleasant as one of the really expensive tea rooms in London. I was served by a kind waitress. We had Cream tea sets ( a pot of tea of your choice with two scones) and the scones were decent, made me a scone addict after the visit. Also the decor is just magical that it makes you immerse in to a fantasy of Oxford even more. Again, price might not be as friendly as other places, but I was absolutely happy for the price. Definitely I would like to visit again!

Best coffee shop in Oxford. Impeccable staff. Superb Columbian coffee. Nice deserts. Retro stylish ambiance. Big glass front. Clean toilets. Good space between tables. The best place for a restful time away from the hustle and bustle of the main street.

A much looked forward to revisit did not disappoint. The java coffee is excellent. However the croissant was neither spectacular or boring, but the knob of butter was very cold and hard.

They claim to be the oldest cafe in Oxford It’s very pretty but very small. They don’t take tables larger than 5. The desserts and coffee were very good. I thought that the best thing was the Belgian waffle with ice cream and syrup. It is fairly pricey so be expected to more than usual for desserts. The hostess was very friendly and service was quick. I would recommend.

Even though it is a little pricey, it is nice to treat yourself now and then. I come to this cafe each time I come to Oxford. This time arriving around 10:30am for an early “elevenses” before much of the Oxford stores opened up, therefore pretty much had the pick of the tables. It is a smaller cozier cafe so one would understand, come summer months with all the tourists, you might have to wait a bit to get a table. However, my experience once seated the waitresses have always been prompt and are helpful in their service. As far as the teas, I have only once had a question, flagged my waitress down who was only too happy to take care of the situation once explained. Good service thank you.

Beautifully atmosphere and very friendly servers. I really enjoyed the afternoon tea as well, the scones and clotted cream were perfect, the desserts weren’t to my taste but by no means were they unpleasant. Overall, I would recommend.
