This is my first trip to the UK so I really l just wanted a typical dish... Fish & Chips and a pint. I was walking through Oxford Square and came across this establishment. From the outside, it just seemed to epitomize what I had imagined a traditional English restaurant. Inside, there are multiple dining areas, some with screens to watch the latest match. And they have a few bar areas where you can enjoy a pint and a meal.
The first pint I had, was just okay, but then was given a different pint which I found to be amazing! And finally... I was able to get a traditional Fish & Chips and it was everything I had expected. Of course, I have had fish & chips before and at many places throughout the world that claim to be traditional but this was simply epic! The fish was a generous portion of haddock and in a delicious batter. Not too heavy or greasy. It came with a tartar sauce and some malt vinegar. The chips were thick and cooked to a golden brown on the outside and still crispy on the side. Maybe everywhere in England serves great fish & chips, but in my experienced having dined in over 90 countries, nothing compares to what I have had here.
The atmosphere is fun, the people who work there are very nice and friendly. Great food and atmosphere. I'm sure I'll be back at least one more time before I leave.
Had their fish n chips and pork and leek sausages with mash and gravy. Great quality ingredients made into delicate flavours. Fish and batter had great textures. Personally thought the service could’ve been more attentive for the service charge.
9/10.
Another fine pub at the heart of Oxford's city centre. If it's warm and sunny then enjoying food and drinks on the streetside tables is a must. People watching, taking in the sites, enjoying a pint with total strangers or taking the weight off your feet following some shopping or tourist activities can all be enjoyed comfortably. Inside there are amble choices of comfortably seating and a spacious and well stocked bar.
Not had a scotch egg before? Try one of their home made ones or perhaps a pork pie. Definitely made better with a freshly poured pint of ale or lager beer, of which there is a varied selection.
Amazing! I ordered their chicken, ham, and leek pie with cabbage. I also got an ordered of mull-spiced rum and spiked cider as well. The food was DELICIOUS! The service was incredible as well. We had trouble accessing their mobile ordering at our table, and crew were happy to aid us in placing an order. You have to place orders for drinks at the bar yourself, but there was no trouble there at all. The pub itself is very old, and the interior lends itself to the feeling that you are an extra in some medieval movie. The prices are reasonable considering the portions and quality of the food. The drinks were a bit pricey, but well worth it. The mull-spiced rum was delicious! Great food, great service, great structure of the building. All in all, one to visit!
Great 12th century pub,with a fantastic atmosphere.
I visited on a sunny Saturday the pub was busy, but the bar staff had it under control and made short service of a big queue.
The staff were friendly and professional, the beer was kept well and not to pricey.
This pub is well worth a visit when in Oxford.
Cracking pub and great choice of cask and keg ales
Bar snacks scotch eggs an pies available
Nice and cozy but quite a large pub so plenty of room
Seating outside
Toilets could do with a refresher
We had roast pork, fish and chips and a burger. All very good. Staff were very pleasant. We were full up so we didn’t have room for pudding.
Just had a quick pint and a real tasty pork pie. On the pork pie scale it gets an 8. Bot lacking on the jelly.😆.Delicious.
Lively place to stop and soak up the old oxford vibe
It was quite busy , but I found a quiet table in the corner. The food was a little bit pricier than I was expecting. But the waldorf salad was amazing, and the steak and ale pie was equally great, perhaps the best i've had during my journey here
Excellent food, including vegetarian options. All of the mayonaise bottles were close to empty, but they did have a good selection of condiments. The noise level is on the high side but not unpleasant. Good location.
Youngs pub. Fish & chips and a Cheese burger for Dinner. Busy pub with a good atmosphere & no need for music. Speedy service & Food hot & tasty. Would return to try the pork pie that every one was ordering with their pint.
Nice place, but not much offer though.
The food was delivered very quickly and was tasty. Beer was good as well.
The staff was very friendly. The price is a bit high, I guess it is because its location.
The place accepts dog and which is good.
You need to order in the bar, or from the table using the app.
Liked it.
Nice place with good atmosphere and delicious food that I would be happy to share with friends.
But they forgot that today is my birthday, so I gladly ate everything myself
Classic old pub with cosy rooms and a great student atmosphere. Lots of history written and depicted on its walls, including photos from the visit of Secretary of State John Kerry.
Guinness was good! The pub is well situated and nearby to the centre of town and a bunch of colleges.
The toilets are a bit out of touch with the rest of the place, but toilets are toilets: maybe just a good clean is needed!
Great pub. Has a nice warm friendly old style pub feeling and lots of space inside.
Toilets are down a long flight of stairs so be careful.
Cheesy chips and coffee were fantastic.
Great service and brought the food out to the outside table for us.
Really lovely afternoon at an amazing spot. Portion of hot chips seemed a bit small, but then I am used to NZ large portions.
A friendly, warm atmosphere. Staff were all welcoming and efficient and we got chatting to the manager - Alister. The pub was lovely and clean and Alister let us know the pub is actually dog friendly so we will be back in July with our pup. Can't recommend the food and drinks enough. Thank you for the hospitality.
