Used to be my favourite pub back in the 80's and 90's. Pop back in occasionally and still a great place, bar staff great, food great. One of Oxford's best pubs.

Best fish and chips I've had in Oxford, and that is high praise seeing as every pub in that blessed city makes excellent fish and chips. Great atmosphere, and great history. Also had an excellent boar's meat hamburger there.

The Chequers is a good place to know about when in Oxford. It is hidden down a narrow alley slightly off the main tourist route and away from the crowds haunting the most popular tourist eating spots. But not to worry about losing history as Chequers is housed in a many centuries old building which you can read about from the plaques on the walls. And it serves up a tasty variety of British pub food. Their fish & chips is justifiably well-known (and a huge portion) but I opted for a combination of smaller dishes this time. I especially wanted to try the Potted Devonshire Crab which is not on a lot of menus. It should be as it is delicious. The Scotch Egg made from Gloucester Old Spot sausage was excellent - especially with some Colman's English Mustard added. And my Pork Pie with a Golden Beetroot Picalilli became my main course. A Nicholson's IPA accompanied all this. The Chequers is a perfect lunch spot in Oxford! Tips - There is outdoor and bi-level indoor dining. You order and pay at the bar first and then a wait person brings the food to you. Don't worry .... they will find you!

Traditional Oxford pub tucked down an alley off the High Street. Serves a good variety of well kept beer along with all the usual drinks. Lots of seating in various rooms, dining area upstairs and an outside/yard seating area too. Relatively pricey but for central Oxford it's a good choice. Nice pub ambience. Nothing fancy or annoying.

Cool place to hang, beers are reasonably priced, usually under 3 pounds for a pint. There is music that is not too loud, depending on the night and time. Last time I was there I had to stand outside in the alley because all the seats were gone.

Old pub in the middle of Oxford. The pub grub style food was very tasty and reasonable value. The pub has a few different rooms and space outside. Sports screens every where. This is the third time here and it is a very popular pub and rightly so. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Lovely old laneway pub, keeps with bones of original building being one room deep. Provides a great atmosphere with plenty of seating options. A must if you are looking for a pint!

Plenty of choice for ale fans, a recent refurbishment has enhanced the venue, interior is dark on the ground floor, the upper floors are predominantly for dining, the courtyard is well used and offers a nice backdrop to the pub

Great historical pub. Went for the steak and ale pie with mash and vegetables with a pint of Nicholsons Pale Ale which didn't disappoint. Large atmospheric rooms and outside courtyards, well worth a visit. Service could not be faulted top marks.

A lovely little pub / bar which is hidden down an alley off the High Street. Serves food but we arrived a little late so the kitchen was closed. Loads of space in the bar area and the upstairs bar too. TVs so you can watch the sports news all weekend! Any bar with Jaipur on cask is a yes from me - and the Pinot Grigio wasn’t bad either!

Nice average pub in Oxford, clean and various seats. Good location. The drinks are good. The staff have a bit of an attitude, hence why I wouldn’t give it five stars.

Beautiful place with absolutely lovely staff and a wonderful historic atmosphere. However, the cobbles make it a little difficult to navigate, and it's incredibly expensive for a non-local (drinks average around £10.) This being said, though, both the food and drinks are good quality and taste incredible. I can see why they're so pricey.

First pint, always a good sign. London Pride, very nice . Dinner was excellent, I had a mixed grill, Mrs Ellis had the chicken schnitzel, both meals were spot on. 2nd pint, Dark star Hoppy beer, lovely pint too. Coukdnt fit a pudding in but really wanted one. Good place friendly staff, Yorkshire lass was very pleasant. Looked after us well. Thank you.

Atmosphere and mood was good - Chequers has always been a favourite. The food and service were generally very good, however, one of the brisket burger eaters were concerned by it being a little 'sloppy' and the bun getting wet. Chicken pie was excellent. I would say that the tables were a little sticky (not dirty, but when varnish gets wet). Overall, we enjoyed our food and visit.

Well above average roast beef Sunday lunch on offer here. Makes a nice change from all the mediocrity on offer in Oxford. We'll be back! They don't let you run a tab without leaving your card behind the bar which is an unpleasant practice. Being a city centre venue I can understand this policy for walkins but we had booked for lunch. Makes it tricky to leave a tip for the serving staff.

Nice out of the way Oxford pub, not as busy as the Turf Tavern so easy to get a seat. Small courtyard nice in the sun. Can't comment on food as we only had a couple of beers.
