Took my dad and brother for dad’s 70th in same night as Oktoberfest was running this weekend. The place was heaving but it was a lovely atmosphere, the service was t fast but it didn’t matter, the starter of olives and bread was delicious and the steak platter was amazing ( as was the first time I went). Definitely recommend this place, food, wine and staff and pub are super. :)
Visited this amazing place tonight. We didn't book, but we were more than happy to have a drink until a table became available. The staff were so friendly and the busy atmosphere was a joy to experience. The food was amazing. Seriously everyone must try the steak platter. It's most definitely a place we will return to on our next visit to Oxford. Absolutely loved it. Thank you to the chef and all the staff for making it a night to remember!
I seriously have to recommend the full English breakfast at the Chester. Yum yum, my breakfast I just had there was amazing. The homemade baked beans make you never want to eat Heinz beans again, the nutty black pudding, buttery sliced potatoes, crusty toasted bread, fat sausage and bacon are all included for a tummy filling tenner. You get tea/coffee and orange juice thrown in too. So relaxing to happily sit on my own with friendly staff waiting on your breakfast needs. I am in a lovely food coma right now!! Go try, it's really worth it.
We've visited twice now to devour the steak platter and we plan to visit again soon!! The atmosphere, food and friendly staff make it a really nice evening. Top tip though - my other half loves a pint of lager and was a bit confused by the beers on offer... He tried a few but we've now decided sharing a bottle of red (the Malbec in particular) is a better option. Would highly recommend it!
Great little place looks fab on the inside. Had steak platter it was cooked perfectly, highly recommend it. Sensible prices. Staff were friendly and attentive.
I love the steak platter at the Chester, a real treat! We tried the roast dinner for the first time this Sunday and it was SO good!! Lovely laid back vibe, friendly staff and fun atmosphere. Often busy but usually fairly easy to wait and get a table. Great for a special occasion too. Celebrated my mums 60th and she loved it. Hope to try the wine tasting next.

Very funny and sweet crew, great people and atmosphere, the best food I ever had and the best beer selection in town. Their "much talked about" stake platter is amazing and there is no word for how good it is! Will definately give this pub my highest recommendations.

Best food in Oxford any quite frankly anywhere else I’ve been. You just know the chef takes great pride in his food. Awesome drinks selection too. Love it!

This place is amazing, parking is tricky as it's situated in the back streets off the Iffley Road, Oxford. Service was great and the food was just amazing. If you can't manage all of it ask for a takeaway box and it makes a good lunch the following day. You need to book as this place gets very busy every day.
Returning to UK we were looking forward to an English, Sunday, roast beef dinner at last. So the first point to note is that they don't do roast beef on the last Sunday in the month, they do lamb instead. However that being said, it was still delicious. We had quite a long wait for the food but it was worth the wait. Regarded by some as the best roast in Oxford. 🙂
Loved, loved, loved this place ❤️. Out of the way of most tourists (except us...lol) so a pretty relaxed atmosphere for a Friday lunch. We'd read the reviews, and we were craving a good steak. The shared steak platter didn't disappoint. Cooked perfectly to order, we could not fault it. Also, a thumbs up to the friendly staff. It's also great to see NZ Sauv available. A little taste of home. Keep up the great work 👍
Wanted to try the sharing steak platter . Steak was a little chewy but there was a good amount of steak chips and cabbage, we couldn't finish. Beer selection was great atmosphere and service good too. Very limited menu , not a bad thing , not sure I would eat here again but definitely go again for a drink.
I never have medium rare steak, but this was cooked almost perfectly. I absolutely enjoyed it as well as a lovely host who made the wait time seem like a piece of cake. Potatoes were a bit much, but certainly not a problem as the meal was totally worth the price.

Easily one of the best pubs in Oxford.
Came here as a group of 3 on a Sunday late afternoon after reading the reviews about the roast dinner.
This pub is tucked away on a quiet street and evidently very popular for good reason. It has table service but looks like a pub which I think was quite nice.
Unfortunately we discovered that they finish serving this at 3pm which was a little disappointing! However our waiter was very good at suggesting other dishes and recommended the steak. He was very complimentary of the food and boy was he right!
Everything is made at this pub. The steak was cooked from fresh, the bread arrived hot, and the food was extremely tasty. The steak platter for 3 people was a perfect portion size and a very reasonable price. The eclairs (specials that night) were also lovely.
The service was quick and our waiter did all he could to ensure we got our food quickly as we were quite hungry. He was also very friendly and talkative which was lovely.
The pub is also dog friendly for all those with pets!
Would definitely visit again, and recommend!
Having seen a few people share the awesome steak platter and other food options via social media as well as a friend recommending the Chester Arms, we were keen to get booked and made aware to book with good notice. The atmosphere and service was great as we came in, quick service with great recommendations from Ross the waiter who said the bread was amazing (it was), and also suggested good drinks options which were spot on. Steak platter for 2 was more than enough but we did just finish it as it was so tasty. You could certainly give steak platter for 3 a go with 2 people eating big portions and some to take home. One of the best spent dinners for the overall evening and already looking at returning within the next few weeks.

Food is delicious. I particularly enjoyed the salad that is served alongside fish and chips. It made me feel a little less guilty about eating fried food. The salad worked really well with the fish and chips really. Big portions. I ordered a small plate and it was the perfect amount for me.
Good ambience. Located on a quiet, peaceful street away from the crowd in city centre. Indoor and outdoor seating.
Would love to visit again.
Small little pub in Oxford. They do the most amazing steak platter to share. The food was cooked perfectly and plenty to go around. They have a lovely photograph wall for all the dogs who go with their owners. Highly recommended.
Steak platter was phenomenal. Really tasty, perfectly good and a massive portion!
There were 10 of us and it tool 2 hours for our food to come which was a bit ridiculous but when it arrived, the taste more than made up for it.
My word… the steak platter was incredible! The staff were super friendly and although it seems expensive, you 100% pay for what you get! So much food and every bite is so tasty. Cannot recommend enough. The whole vibe of the place was warm and welcoming, if you’re in Oxford definitely make sure you go.
It’s a little walk from the centre but you’ll need it to walk off all the food 😊

Visited the Chester arms earlier this evening with a friend, With expectations very high - We went for the Bread Basket, Lamb Koftas & The Signature Hamzahs Steak Platter for two and to top it off we had the Crème Brûlée as well as the Tiramisu….The meal broke all expectations and went above and beyond, Everything to the very last minute detail was perfect….perfect! It is easily the best Steak I have had to date!!

Nice atmosphere, Good service and the sharing steak platters are amazing - a carnivores dream! Limited choice when we went for specials, but there is always something on the menu even if you don’t like/want steak.
Parking is a bit tricky in the area, as a lot is residents permit only.
Best stake plattet ever!!!!!!!! Definetely recommended.
We ordered the whole roast chicken which is suitable for 2/3 - but I think it could serve 4 easily. We had lots of chicken left over and asked for a doggie bag. Very tasty chicken in herbs, and very good veggies. Served with gravy and bread sauce.
Very friendly staff and very attentive. Highly recommended. Glad I found this hidden gem- it’s down a back street.
Get there early if you want a table and roast - they sell out early. Get in the queue at 1145 to get your table.
Really good food (have the salted caramel brownie for desert!!), nice atmosphere (we sat outside) and our two waitresses were amazing.

Really enjoyed it! Very dog friendly and you might get a pick of yours posted along in its doggy wall! Went in on a Sunday we had the fish and Chips and the Pork Belly, spot on! Great selection of beer also! Will return during the week to try the menu!
Absolutely sublime food. The steak platter was fantastic - we asked for medium rare and in my opinion was perfectly done, juice and moist. Incredibly enjoyable food. Highly recommend and will be going back!
