I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Axe & Compass for the first time, and let me tell you, it was an absolute treat. We made a reservation, which I'd recommend, and our table was all set up and snug in a cozy corner when we arrived.
The service was top-notch, thanks to our waiter, who was a genuinely nice bloke. He was super attentive, polite, and even went out of his way to be friendly with my little daughter, giving her crayons to keep her entertained.
Now, let's talk about the food. It was delicious! The presentation was on point, and every bite was bursting with flavor. I've got to give a special shout-out to the rack of ribs - hands down, the best I've ever had in a pub restaurant! I can't recommend it enough.
In short, The Axe & Compass was a fantastic experience. The service and food were nothing short of brilliant, and we'll definitely be coming back for more. If you're planning a visit, I'd say make sure to book a table - you won't regret it! Overall, a well-deserved 5 stars.
I've heard so many good things about this place prior to visiting.
It's such a picturesque pub, overlooking fields and beautifully lit up at night. All the staff are so welcoming and helpful. The food is elegantly placed and tastes delicious. I was very happy with my food and the service and will be back at some stage in the future 😋
Visited this lovely pub today after going to a local pumpkin farm. Pub had lovely atmosphere, food was delicious and staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.
First time visiting with daughter in law and granddaughters. We were welcomed by friendly staff. The place has a lovely warm feel to it. So well decorated to give this feel of home. The staff are polite and very helpful. Our food looked and was delicious. We will be returning with other members of our large family for Sunday lunch.
Delicious food, we had the roast , pork and turkey with a side of cauliflower cheese. Could have done with being a bit hotter, maybe heat the plates.
Dessert was pineapple and rum upside down cake and Eton mess.
The Eton mess was made with blackberry and blackcurrant and it was fantastic. The berries were a nice sharp contrast to the meringue and cream.
Long wait for dessert but it was worth the wait
A really big thank you to the super staff who accommodated our request for a table full of sides and starters. Nothing was too much trouble . The food was absolutely delicious, really very tasty. Big thank you too, to the chef who managed to prep and deliver our selection all at once. Super evening to compliment our girls weekend x
Axe and Compass is in the middle of the Rodings so little drive but worth the visit.
Has a new Manager this year who is very nice.
The food is good quility and good value especially 241 days Monday to Wednesday, Monday is Roast, Tuesday is Burgers and Wednesday fish. We went on a Wednesday and both meals were excellent.
They have three real ales, which they rotate, none to my taste this time, see picture but normally have London Pride on.
I would recommend booking to ensure a table as popular.
They advertise quiz night and I been to singers nights so check if that interest you.
Large outside area, garden and covered area.
Lovely meal. We had the roasts, turkey and pork for me with the cauliflower cheese side.
Very tasty but it could have been a tad hotter, maybe heat the plates.
Dessert was worth the rather long wait. I had the Eton mess with mixed berries which was fantastic just a bit of sharpness from the berries complementing the cream and meringue.
Husband said the pineapple and rum upside down cake was delicious.
A lucky mistake for us as we meant to go to the axe and compasses in arkesden but that will wait for another day
Loved this place. Great food. Waiting time was a bit long but that's ok as all food was cooked from scratch. Excellent quality. Loved it.
Unexpected find after having visited Cammas Hall Farm. Inviting interior with great decorative touches and a beautiful fireplace. Food was delicious.
Quite a nice place with ample parking, spotlessly clean bathrooms. All of staff that we met on our visit was perlite, welcoming, friendly and helpful with a good knowledge of the menu. As all of our questions we asked about the food was answered on the spot. Now for the important part the food. We had a starter to share as we was trying to have 3 coreses. It turned up quite quickly looking well presented and full of flavour. There was just the right amount of time between courses, not rushed nor excessive. The mains came out piping hot, and once again well presented. All of us enjoyed the mains, but alas I didn't have the room left to continue with dessert, but others did. And they all said that they injoyed it. We all agreed that we would be happy to return for another go.
Out on an Observed ride on my motorcycle purring along, went passed and see this out in the middle of nowhere place and remembered the name. Checked out on line and decided to go back and try it out. Rolled up on my Bike and parked up, went in and there were a few tables taken, but it was 12:30 on a Saturday. Approached the bar and was met with a smile and good customer service from the young lady behind serving. She politely asked me what my Poison was and I had Half a Timothy Taylors with a Bag of crisps. Went to one of the tables and grabbed a perch. sitting there just watching the place work was a pleasure and the food from the kitchens that was being taken to the tables now filling up looked well worth the prices listed on the menu. So I had one of the bar snacks of whitebait, didn't take long from order to table and it was really nicely cooked and presented. This sold it to me and I booked a Table for 4 for the following Saturday at 13:30.
We met up and sat at one of the tables, ordered some drinks and our Main Courses, they arrived and we eat with our eyes first and the food was as good as it looked, Pork Belly, Scampi n chips, Haddock n chips and a Steak Burger along with 2 sides of Onion rings. Tucked in and it was all soon demolished. Service was polite n quick and the Dessert menu turned up, Oh Dear! Cheese Cake 2 of, a Creme Brulee and a Black Forest Ice cream Sundae, all were well received and munched, but alas the Sundae was a let down as the Glass was at least 40% air, scrimped on the portion control on this one and tried to hide it. But that was the only let down.
All in all just Book, go, eat, drink, be merry and make some memories at this wonderful little place.
To the Staff and the owner, keep up the good work and keep the passion, you have a little Gem here and Thank you.
My wife and stepson and I were the first to try the new afternoon tea and it was out of this world. The cakes were moist and delicious and the sandwiches were full and tasty. But it was the unique crispy flakey cronuts that replaced the scones that really excelled this experience. Really Really lovely
Two for one fish and chip night. We all had lovely food and drinks.
The staff were great and attentive.
Definitely worth a visit we will be back. Thanks
First time visiting for Sunday lunch. Lovely little pub. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Me and my partner were both very pleased with our roasts, although she was a little jealous of another tables bigger piece of crackling 🤣🤣. Will definitely be returning
I've got to admit we are a fussy family! It was Tuesday Evening, loads of walk ins, great atmosphere and a waiter who single handedly made our visit one to remember!
The chef produced lovely food and our drinks were always full! I am looking forward to coming back.
Thank-you!
Dropped in on the way home and pleased to get a free table. 2 for 1 steak night was a bonus. Everything was very good, although the steaks were a bit overdone for our taste.
Nice pub. The food looked good. Next time
