The Alice Hawthorne was recommended to us by friends who have been there a few times and have always had a wonderful meal. The village surrounding the pub has a lovely duck pond and is chocolate box beautiful. We had a three course Sunday lunch and the food was excellent. My husband & daughter said the roast beef just melted in their mouth, my roast pork was beautiful and the crackling was crispy & delicious. We all commented that the roast potatoes were the best we've ever had. The staff were lovely, very welcoming & friendly, the service was good, the decor is superb, it was everything we expected and more, we will definitely recommend this pub to our friends and we will definitely be back.
Divine food and place! Our group of 6 needs included gluten free, egg free and veggie and certainly put the waiting staff through their paces.. the only suggestion would be to add allergy-info to the menu. Staff were knowledgable, handling questions and offering alternatives well. We had a great evening with great food.
I’ve known the Alice Hawthorne for over 40 years and have enjoyed its atmosphere character and food We were most impressed with its newest incarnation the food is exceptional 👍🏻
Amazing pub food. The best I've had in a long time. Such a beautiful pub and setting.
Beautiful setting, building and atmosphere. Stacks of character, rustic charm and amazing food and drink. Staff are very attentive, friendly and can't do enough for you. Prices reflect the food which is outstanding.
This was our second visit and will definitely come back again ! Beautiful decor , cosy log fire where we were seated . Staff polite and friendly and the food is amazing ! . Plenty of choice on the menu , we had 3 courses and everything was delicious . I had the Hendricks desert which was unusual but brilliant . Everything presented beautifully , fantastic evening thank you .
Whilst Harrogate & Leeds provide a huge choice of eateries, I think most of us can count on one hand the ones we love to go back to time & time again.
Despite years of driving through Green Hammerton on the A59, I'd never ventured down the side road to Nun Monkton - why would you?!
Seriously 'blown away' by this place. Clare and Will Topham and their team are doing something awesome at the Alice Hawthorn at the end of the lane in Nun Monkton.
Soooo worth the detour
Fantastic, great food great location and we will certainly be going back to do a walk then go in for lunch. Couldn’t fault it one bit. Truly wonderful.
Our visit was absolutely faultless! I couldn't recommend it highly enough. It's brilliant to finally have this famous pub back on the map after such a tedious number of false starts. The refurbishments have been worthwhile and the new dining room is stunning!

My first visit to The Alice. As you drive into the village of Nun Monkton, you absorb your beautiful surroundings of this quaint little village and look in awe at the green and the very tall may pole. This small village boasts the largest may pole and green in the whole of the UK. Upon arriving at the pub, I could see the chickens and vegatables growing in their gardens, this, always a pleasing sight to be had. The Alice boasts an array of outdoor seating at the front and in the secluded, manicured gardens to the rear too. The pub is beautifully decorated with a small, intimate dining room, a bar area for more casual dining and drinks and a large room, perfect for larger parties.
Rebecca, the Assistant manager chats to me about their up and coming plans for the premises and the option to have drinks receptions in the barn for larger parties, served around a warming fire pit in the colder months.
I order a gin and tonic, served with rosemary and cucumber, a delightful and refreshing special and begin choosing food to order. I view the creative menu and opt for goats cheese croquettes, walnut, apple and beetroot to start. The flavours blend delightfully and offer an explosion of taste jointly, for main the Chicken tagliatelle which is served in a rich, creamy sauce and made with fresh paster, seasoned perfectly.
Next time, I will save space for dessert, but this time, there was simply no room left! Beautiful food at reasonable prices and with something for everyone.
Beautiful pub in a lovely village. Staff very friendly. Food was delicious. Will definitely go again.
Gorgeous food at The Alice for Sunday lunch yesterday. Enjoyed roast pork with the works including nicely done roast potatoes. Dessert - beautifully presented - rhubarb in 3 guises! Sitting in the bar area was a bit chilly next to the window even though we were alao next to the fireside. Would probably go again but would ask to be kept warmer.
Lovely place, amazing food and ace staff 😊
Lovely village pub restaurant. Just had great Sunday lunch - nothing too much trouble. If I had a comment (not criticism) it would be to include a lighter starter option (eg melon or salad ) on the menu.
Nice people nice place lovely food! What's not to like?
We had such a wonderful meal, the ambiance is amazing and the staff are so lovely! We really appreciated how friendly and welcoming everyone was. The food was some of the best in york, the crab lasagne left a bit to be desired but everything else was absolutely incredible (I can’t fault it!). We will be back soon for another special meal and will be staying over as the rooms looked gorgeous. Thank you for such a special evening! P.s. make sure you don’t miss out on the desserts… heavenly
Beautifully converted barn with modern European Cuisine and warm service. Food is locally sourced, seasonal and very fresh.
Great steak selection and vast seafood options, too.
Indoor as well as outdoor seating available with some BBQ events in the summer.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Thumbs up will return 👍
Beautiful 3 course lunch with excellent service. Good selection of seafood.
We were recommended this restaurant as a good place to go for a meal and it certainly didn't fail to meet the expectations, fantastic service from arrival and throughout the whole evening, the food was excellent too with very attentive staff
We had an amazing meal here - all three courses were delicious! The starter of king prawns was delicate, buttery and a nice hit of garlic. The waygu beef steak was cooked to perfection, tender and super flavourful. And their take on tiramisu stole the show, such lovely flavours of coffee and cream all came together. I’d highly recommend it!
This is my mother’s favourite place to eat because it’s so consistently brilliant. Punchy flavours cooked to perfection.
The staff are attentive but not overbearing and kind enough to squeeze us in last minute too.
We stayed the night and enjoyed dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Firstly, the architecture of the garden rooms is exquisite. The use of Douglas Fir throughout and the beautiful interiors are a magnificent example of modern architecture mixed with traditional building techniques. We had a large spacious room with a generous bathroom.
The food was exquisite too, we enjoyed a starter main and dessert and enjoyed every one. Breakfast was delicious too.
The staff are helpful and friendly and we are very happy to recommend The Alice Hawthorn as one of the Norths best places to stay and eat.
Lovely upscale pub style food in a pretty village. Not too expensive, all dishes were good. I guess the only fault I could find was that the affogato had a much smaller ice cream scoop than other places.
Went for Sunday lunch today. The venue is stunning and the service was relaxed but attentive. We had goats cheese croquettes and king scallops as starters, followed by duck breast and roast beef for main course. All 4 dishes were outstanding. We'll be returning very shortly.
I enjoyed a wonderful evening as a guest at a birthday dinner and celebration. About 25 guests were present. An evening enhanced by very much by the atmosphere and staff
Food was really good for the most part - lamb, duck, pig cheek, gochujang chicken. Tiramisu was a bit of a letdown - with a twist but not sure the twist worked. Beautiful place in a beautiful village.
Absolutely delicious lunch at The Alice Hawthorn! Such a great pub in the middle of the cutest yorkshire village. The cows were just happily grazing on the green as we drove in. Great service from the staff, we were greeted with smiles and sat outside in the courtyard on the grass. My kids were happy to see there was a kids menu which suited them just right. The desserts are heavenly so you need to leave room to try one! Everything about their menu is delicious. We will definitely be back at some point. Five stars well earned! - E.C
Lovely old pub recently modernised and only completed in August. Accommodation consists of pub rooms and garden rooms. We took the smallest room, the Cosy Pub Room which, at £150 Friday rate, was quite expensive. The weekday rate is £120, still expensive but lovely decor and furnishings. Since we have missed a holiday this year we splashed out.
The restaurant was excellent. Starters included Tempura prawns, Iberico pork cheek, scallops. Mains included local lamb, Iberico pork again, halibut, roast cod, roast celeriac etc. Prices were reasonable. Ok
A wide choice of desserts completed a delicious meal. Wine prices were not over expensive but there was also a selection of Timothy Taylor draught beers.
Breakfast was yummy. I had a delicious' yogurt with damsons and granola, full English breakfast again w local produce, followed by warm croissants and honey.
My wife had porridge with banana and honey, smoked salmon w poached eggs.
Again all excellent.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The village is a wonderful old English village green complete w the tallest maypole in the country.
Well worth a mid week or, if you want to splash out, a weekend break.
Fantastic food. Friendly service. Did I mention that the food is really, really good? Also a very good, if a little pricey, wine list
Spent an amazing afternoon and evening here for my wife's birthday. The location is amazing, the building is beautiful and the staff couldn't be more professional. The food was exquisite and we rounded the evening off with a wonderful cheese board and some vintage port.
The whole experience was everything we hoped for and more.
Definitely on my list of favourites! Thanks
Stunning little place excellent rooms, superb food and service by the team. Breakfast was great nice little touch with the amuse before choosing the menu
We were looking for somewhere to eat on our way to York and ended up finding ourselves here.
The place is very picturesque from the outside, the lights on the buildings really look the part. It's a massive venue, much bigger than we expected from our first impression.
Once inside we made our way to the bar and asked if it was possible to get some food, the bartender showed us the specials menu on a blackboard above the fireplace and said there was a table 'through there' we could have. We ordered drinks and set about going to the table when a customer suggested we stay in the bar area as it was going to be cold where the server had suggested. We redirected ourselves to a table that had just been vacated, got sat down and were moved within minutes to the proper restaurant area as where we were sat had been booked for half seven. There was a sign indicating this though we hadn't planned on being there that long anyway.
Once seated we were asked if we wanted some water for the table to which we replied yes, the water however never arrived.
I wouldn't say the menu was overly big but it was very high end in terms of price, we settled for a few sides and couldn't complain about the quality of the food but would think for the pricing the service would have been slightly better than it was.
Phenomenal food, something for everyone , exceptional service and food. Literally faultless. Found by chance and would highly recommend, can’t wait to go back. Ample parking out back and easy to get to, just five minutes off the A59. Stunning place.
Spent Christmas here. Magical. From the fabulous personal service of the team, the stunningly well crafted and delicious food to the sparklingly clean and architecturally designed new rooms. Everything id hoped for and 100% more. Absolutely would recommend.
