The Moorcock is one of a kind, a unique dining experience where the chef creates dishes from his own imagination. He uses ingredients grown in his own kitchen garden, foraged locally or supplied by very local farmers; and there's a lot of pickling, preserving, smoking and BBQ. The bar has a wide range of craft beers (again mostly local but some from further afield including Belgium), a selection of sake, and a very interesting wine list. Everything we ordered with delicious in its own way, and we just have to come back several times to taste the rest of the menu. Very highly recommended!

We stopped by for lunch after a rainy walk. We were warmly welcomed, dogs got a blanket and a water bowl. Service was friendly and attentive, food was absolutely delicious. Stunning flavour combinations and textures. The atmosphere was cozy with a nice buzz. Would definitely recommend.

A one of a kind evening! Delicious food with an excellent choice of wines to go with. An ever changing menu with amazing flavours. Such a shame it is closing in January 2023. If you can get a table before then, highly recommended. Last but not least, friendly and helpful staff. A real pleasure to visit.

Sen. Say. Shon. Nal!!!!!! Every mouthful was a delight, and every mouthful was a connection to the earth. The menu has something for everyone with great meat, pesce, veggie and vegan options. The wood fires give the god an incredible rich and deep flavour. Very very dog friendly (it seemed like most tables had a dog, and they provided blankets and dog bowls for all). The tableware was also stunning and the staff friendly and attentive. This is the kind of place you dream to go back to.

So glad we were able to visit the Moorcock before it closes permanently in January. Beautiful spot with a small and perfectly formed garden with views out to the Moors. The food was beautiful and perfectly matched the stunning wine list with a focus on natural wines. It's been a while since I've seen a drinks list so extensive. They had a selection of champagne by the glass and we also enjoyed a Gruner Vertliner and delicate Orange wine by the carafe. The food was outstanding, we could have ordered everything on thr menu. Standout dishes were beautiful huge Colchester oysters with mergez sausage, halloumi topped with courgettes, beef tartare with eggs bread and mushrooms and thr famous smoked potatoes. A really enjoyable afternoon in the sun at The Moorcock Inn.

If you want to eat in the restaurant you’ll most likely need to book in advance - Jay Rayner’s more than complementary article in the Guardian has definitely put this place on the map. The tasting menu is amazing - imaginative use of often local, foraged ingredients with a menu that changes regularly to match what’s seasonal. Great wine selection with a focus on ‘natural’ wine, many available by the glass.

Visited today on the back of Jay Rayner's recent review. Facing beautiful moorland at the front, the car park and entrance are at the rear of the building. Inside the pub has been tastefully decorated with flagstone floors and a wood burner, which will make it cozy come winter. We arrived at opening time and received a warm welcome from the staff who set up a tab for us. They have a great selection of Belgian bottled beers, gins and selection of beers from local brewery Magic Rock on the pumps. We ordered drinks and food (Whitebait, BBQ chicken and potato wedges). The chicken is barbequed to order, so we were advised that there would be a wait, which we were happy to do, particularly because the beer was good and we were enjoying listening to the eclectic playlist. However, the staff felt that the wait was too long, so they very kindly provided some complimentary charcuterie and some freshly baked sourdough bread to try while we waited. It was very thoughtful of them and a really nice touch to the already excellent service we'd already received. The chicken and potato wedges were both served with a delicious homemade pesto. The chicken was tender and moist, the potatoes fluffy and slightly sweet in taste. An amazing first visit. No doubt we'll be frequent visitors. Thank you for your wonderful food and hospitality 😁

Had the restaurant set menu (7 courses) and 1 extra cheese course. I'm piscetarian so they adapted the menu to suit ( I mentioned this when I booked). The food and wine were delicious, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the pub is really cosy. I ate lots of things I have never tasted before and really enjoyed the 'fresh forraged' style of the menu. For the standard of food etc, the price is great. Our bill came to just over £100 for 2 people. I can't wait to come back and try some of the bar snacks. Highly recommended! :) x

Really lovely place. Up in the hills set in some beautiful countryside. The restaurant and pub are rustic and full of charm, stone and wood decor suits nicely. The staff were wonderful, very cheerful and helpful. Food wise we had the taster menu and wine pairing. I have to say at £35 the taster menu is a bargain for food of this calibre. The bread and butter was possibly the best I have had and we were happily offered more when we had finished it. There was a deep smokey flavour and delicious crunch in the crust. Each course came was a delight with excellent full rounded flavours that married together well. My personal favourite was the onion tart, it almost brought tears to my eyes with delight. It had a rich creamy sauce that was plate lickingly good. My wife's favourite was the hogget which was soft smokey and succulent. The drinks pairings were very good, my favourite being the Belgian sour beer that packed a punch. Overall we had a great night, we never felt rushed and stayed for over 3 hours. Will be back

First of what will be many trips here no doubt! Couldn't fault any of the food in the slightest - easily the best trout I've ever eaten, somehow beating out the best steak pie I've had! Thoughtful service and excellent wine selection to boot

(Feb 2022) Booking a table was easy. First time here. Plenty parking and lovely venue in the moorland. The menu and dishes are phenomenal. Wide variety of beers and wine. Superb service and very attentive staff. The price was reasonable too. My only reason for not scoring 5 stars was that there was no menu for children; however, I accept that it is a gastropub and that it wants to serve fine cuisine, which is a fabulous vision for the local area, as I think the quality of food and style served here is really lacking in the area. Will go again in the future - with no kids - and update my review. It’s a must visit…

The quality of food on offer at the Moorcock is absolutely fantastic for the price, and any price for that matter. Saturday lunch tasting menu was served by excellent waiting staff and the main course of roast chicken cooked in salt dough was presented to us with an introduction on how the cooking takes places, the results when it came were fantastic. The menu changes daily with everything sourced locally from seasonal choices, we could not recommend this place enough, a perfect way to get away from the awful weather experienced on the day, we will definitely return, again and again. 10/10. Look out Tommy Banks, the Moorcock is rising.

If you walk in and there is a free table, grab it, don't stand on ceremony. We went to the pub side. Its busy, crowded, you've got to push yourself forward, dont be a wall flower, there is one blackboard with the menue, take a photo get your drinks and go back to your table. Once you've ordered, food arrives in a haphazard way, but, that's fine, gives you time to discuss it, leave it all in the middle and share. Empty plates are taken away as new ones arrive. That's how it works. The food is excellent we had; mussels, octopus, egg and bacon, puff ball mushroom, crispy potatoes, broad beans, cod in mash, with lots of bread for wiping up and finished with icecream and berries. It was all excellent, flavours, textures the lot. Star of the evening was the breaded puffball mushroom a bit like a fungus schnitzel, but, it was all excellent. The staff are polite and helpful, the beer and prosecco are excellent. We will be back.

Arguably the best food offering in Calderdale, The Moorcock specialises in fine ingredients, often foraged, perhaps fermented, maybe raised on a small holding... likely cooked on their immense woodfired outdoor grill Your thought provoking scran will be served to you on in-house fired crockery - all available to buy in the little shop area upstairs (ask) The superb menu is lubricated by a plethora of local ales, Belgian classics, natural wines, proper wines (ha!) and the best selection of alcohol free I've seen Elevate your experience by walking up here from Sowerby, there are other routes to take back to keep it interesting
