One absolute gem of a place in Newcastle. I have been here so many times that I have lost the count now and I have recommended this place to a lot of my friends in NCL. I absolutely love their Chinese food and the ambience is so peaceful and amazing. All Chinese food lovers, please visit this place for the love of food
Stumbled across this place on a hungover Sunday afternoon. I’m not local so I didn’t know where to eat. But my god was it a good choice. Hands down the best Chinese I’ve ever eaten. Once I walked in and was offered a Chinese or English menu and the place full of Asian families enjoying Sunday dinner i knew I was onto a winner. Super clean open kitchen too. We stuffed ourselves and didn’t feel overly full or thirsty like you do after a Chinese. All the meat was fall off the bone tender and fresh. Duck was amazing.
I am looking for "authentic" Cantonese style food in Newcastle. The 1 other "recommended" restaurant inside Chinatown was booked for a wedding. A local Chinese told me to visit this restaurant a short walk from Chinatown.
I ordered exclusively 3 seafood dishes: scallops, Rock crab, and shrimps. The scallops are cooked as good as anywhere else (if not better). The rock crab is only OK and spicy for a Cantonese person. It stayed in the oil fryer too long and meat is very dry and it took away from the crab flavors. I asked the shrimps peeled (otherwise they come with shells). The shrimps are so salty that I only ate a few.
Being over-critical and a bit unfair to the restaurant, I do believe the food is "authentic" Chinese. If I ordered careful and communicate my preference better, I do believe that I can have a better experience.
One side note. When paying the bill, the waiter told me that they only accepted cash or debit. I rebutted either credit card or not paying; he reluctantly agreed to let me tap with my credit card. He did add a surcharge to my bill which isn't a big deal to me. I believe what the restaurant did is totally against Visa/MC policy.
The Happiness Inn is always a lovely place to go for a Chinese meal. Fair prices with a ton of options to choose from.
Staff are helpful and food is really good (there's a reason I keep returning). You can call in advance or turn up and they will happily seat you if there is space (most of the time there is).
10/10 would definitely reccomend to anyone wanting a great Chinese meal in town.
Authentic and delicious Chinese cuisines …
Probably the best roasted duck 🦆 you could ever get in North East …
Service is reasonably good in non-peak hours …
Next time will be trying dim-sum menu …
Highly recommended!!!

A friend from Hong Kong decided to bring me to his FAVOURITE restaurant. According to him, some of the 'Dim Sum' dishes here were better than the ones served in Hong Kong.
1.Cheong Fun wrapped around Fried Crispy dough
- This was the winning dish for me. The cheong fun is made there and then by the chefs, and cheong fun dishes are only available till 4pm.
-a bowl of soya sauce is provided. Just pour it over the cheong fun, and relish the soft exterior with the crunchy interior.
2.Salted Egg Bun
-The defining test of this dish is the melting yellow salted egg that oozes out after a bite. Here, that's exactly what happened.
3.Beef Hor Fun.
This was a most satisfying meal. I'm certain that I'll come back for more soon.
Service: 10/10 - Food was ready less than 5 mins after order
Price: £
Pork BBQ Rice Noodle Roll (Cheung Fun)
Superb dim sum, very reasonable prices and friendly service! Probably not hidden to those in the know, but nestled next to Mark Tony's, two flights up and you're among the smells and sounds of Hong Kong 😍
Don't hesitate, get up those stairs and order a few plates of heaven 👍👍
Food was good, and the portion sizes where massive too much for us to eat sadly but when asked for the dim sum menu, we were informed they are no longer doing dim sum so I think this needs to be removed, from their website as it was the reason we wanted to eat there.
Very nice lunchtime menu, £11.50 for three courses. Staff also very nice and friendly. They take cards, but not until you leave there's a sign that they only take card payment per £15 a head otherwise it's cash only. Luckily they took our card on this occassion but was asked for cash if we had it. Will return here as enjoyed it, and will just bring cash for an easy life, but in my opinion shouldn't be allowed to do this as not everyone carries cash in this day and age.
Nice authentic dim sum. We can see the chef making the cheung fun. Big portions and friendly staffs. We had a great lunch!
Excellent authentic Chinese Cuisine.
Excellent Staff..
Speaks volumes when you see home many Chinese eat at this restaurant.
I highly recommend you visit this restaurant
My friend took me here, loved the fish, the chicken was a tiny bit too sweet. Otherwise, very nice.
