I followed with Roast chicken with fondant potato, wild leeks and baby carrots. The chicken breast was succulent and juicy with a well-seasoned crispy skin and the delicate roasted vegetables and rich, meaty jus were the perfect accompaniment.
A few months ago, I was visiting Newcastle for a day, and went here for lunch with three others.
We arrived a little early, and our host suggested we take a stroll in the adjoining woods to work up an appetite. We arrived back at the hotel in time for lunch, and after ordering a suitable bottle of wine perused the menu, and I had the Chicken liver starter, and Beef Bourguignon as my main course.
The Chicken Livers were excellent, and left me wanting more. The Beef on the other hand was cooked all the way through, but was stringy and the sauce was too concentrated and effectively over shadowed the taste of the meat. I did manage to finish most of it, but the sauce was too overpowering to continue.
I skipped dessert, and ordered a cappuccino which was excellent.
The service was attentive and professional, and all our needs were attended to immediately. The ambiance was superb, and our seating arrangement with a view of the woods was very calming. I would have been happier if the beef had been better. Next time I plan on ordering a steak!
Beautiful old house in a prime location. Interior ambience is spot on. Plenty of parking. 2x EV charging at 11kw 3 phase available next to reception - web based payment works ok but very costly at £1 per kWh!
Breakfast options are good but service seemed very slow for cooked options.
Rooms stylish, comfortable and clean.

Amazing hotel. I was not here long enough to find out the history of this place. My room was up in the old servants quarters behind a hidden door. Was a great room, the apartment, had a massive bathroom, marvellous bed and a terrace with turrets. The breakfast was great. Well cooked. I had some soup when I arrived and that was also very good. Staff were attentive and felt looked after. And the building, with gardens, minstrel galleries and an old wooden panelled rooms. Well worth the visit.
The hotel is lovely and full of character. The lounge and relaxing areas are decorated beautifully and the fireplaces make everything cosy and warm! We visited on a Saturday lunch time with a friend to have afternoon tea at Fern dining room and bar. Our table was overlooking the back gardens and it was so pretty. The staff was friendly and welcoming and even though you get a time slot when making reservation we didn’t feel rushed to order or finish with our tea! The scones were still warm and fluffy, the sausage rolls perfectly seasoned, the sandwich bread soft and fresh and the desserts exquisite! Loved the carrot cake and the Victorian sponge cake as well as the rhubarb macaron! The gardens surrounding the hotel are stunning and worthy of a long walk to enjoy the nature. Would definitely recommend!
The cream tea was very good and the surroundings great. Staff were pleasant and discreet. The only improvement I would suggest is that the tea could be be refreshed at some point as it was getting cold as the afternoon wore on. I'm sure they would have done this if asked.
Arrived late because of flight delay from Belfast, on arrival was made very welcome and supplied with sandwiches to the room, room lovely and warm and spacious.
Will definitely be back for longer stay.
Simply stunning. A beautiful big roaring fire in the lounge, tastefully decorated communal areas and bedrooms. Quality toiletries and linens made for a decadent stay. Comfortable beds and a huge bath.
Thrilled to see 2 EV Charges by reception, £1 per kW, slightly pricey but very convenient for guests. Free onsite parking.
Breakfast was lovely, continental &/or Full English about £22ph.
WiFi is hit or miss and intermittent 4G/5G were the only negatives.
Situated just a few minutes' drive to the north of Newcastle, the hotel offers a wonderfully tranquil setting.
We had a garden room, with the window open, the only thing we could hear was a nearby waterfall.
The room was spacious and very comfortable, with a few extra niceties thrown in.
The service was very friendly but efficient.
The food at dinner and breakfast was of high standard.
There's ample free parking.
The hotel leadership had clearly thought through making the experience right, from the customer's perspective. The staff were well trained and did a great job.
Overall, it was a great experience.
Family wedding. Wonderful venue and excellent service. Not cheap, but you have to pay for quality. The staff were really friendly and not “stuffy” at all. The food was excellent, even for a big event and the breakfast choice is suitable for everyone’s tastes.
What an absolutely wonderful place. Polite and welcoming staff, beautifully decorated and clean bedrooms and the cherry on the top was the food in the restaurant, which was exquisite.
Would highly recommend this place.
We visited for a wedding, the venue as ever was excellent. We have been here a few times for afternoon tea in the past and it's excellent. It's expensive but worth every penny.
Fantastic stay. Staff were amazing in a beautiful hotel.
Thank you for a great stay
I had originally checked into another hotel but it was awful so I gave this hotel a phone to check if there was a room available. Luckily there was a suite available. It was a bit more expensive than what I would have liked to pay, however we needed to get out of the other hotel.
When I turned up with my daughter the gentleman at reception checked me in quickly and have me a couple of drink vouchers. Our room was beautiful. We ordered room service and the food was lovely and staff very polite.
We had a great night's sleep and a fabulous breakfast in the morning. Will definitely stay here again.
Only reason I didn't give the room 5 stars was because the view wasn't great and for the money spent it would have been nice to have a few free snacks rather than just the expensive drinks and snacks in the fridge.
Great staff, beautiful rooms, perfect place for a night away!
Did not stay here. we just had the set course Sunday lunch. 2 courses for £32 / 3 for £38.
The building is beautiful & the food was beautifully presented & tasty.
Our waitress was helpful & friendly.
Highlights were the red wine gravy served with the succulent beef sirloin & the lemon sponge with lemon custard.
There is a large car park here & a lift (the toilets are on the lower ground floor.)
This review is for the Fern Restaurant. To preface the review, the food was very good, but it isn't quite the fine dining experience it was when we were last there many years ago.
The bread was excellent. The lamb main course was very good and was only let down by a pea purée that was very smooth but just didn't taste of anything. The monkfish and chorizo was again good but lacked chorizo....
The cheeseboard was very nice, but the coconut parfait was rock solid and even when I queried it they said it was correct...
Even though I reported allergies on the booking, this was never brought up and the fact that we were celebrating was also not mentioned.
We certainly had a nice meal but will likely be looking elsewhere for special occasions.
