...Café 21 is still easily one of the best places to eat in Newcastle. The flagship of five restaurants owned by local food hero Terry Laybourne (MBE no less), Café 21 has always flown the flag for the North East food scene, winning a multitude of awards, and even having a Michelin star at one point in it’s now twenty-fifth year. Celebrating Ms. Eats 29th birthday, we get on the cocktail train early and then go for a set lunch, £20 / 3 courses, which is definitely at the higher end of the scale for Newcastle, but 21 Group restaurants are the safest choice going - you know you are going to get assured quality, hence they have remained popular for so long. Having stopped chasing the Michelin man many years ago, and now billing itself as “a classic modern bistro…about eati
Café 21 is a real ‘grown up’ restaurant that is not trying to be anything clever. Simply high quality food and service… I can see why it had so many recommendations. Top place.
We visited 21 for a special occasion and had a marvellous evening. We started with excellent cocktails, French 75, which I found paired especially well with the oysters we ordered. We tried both the Sashimi and Tempura oysters and we loved them. The tomato ponzu gave the oysters a delightfully fresh zing while the oyster mayonnaise was very rich and full of umami. After the oysters we had the white asparagus with ham and truffle which was packed full of flavour. However the absolute star of our dinner was undoubtedly the Tournedos Rossini. The filet mignon was cooked precisely rare, as ordered, and it was beautifully seared on the outside and very tender and tasty on the inside. The seared truffle and foie gras gave the dish a luxurious richness which was perfectly offset by what tasted to me like mustard in the mashed potatoes which were smooth and buttery. The crown of potato crisps gave the dish an exciting crunch, which balanced the overall textures. Finally, the crouton under the steak tasted divine as it had soaked up the juices from the fillet and the Madeira sauce. I would certainly love to go back and try more of their menu and of course would recommend a visit
Incredible. It's not often you take your first half a bite and you're in food heaven. At "21" you are. Excellent team, very friendly, great advice on food and wine pairings. I had the scallops, roe deer and creme brulé - couldn't fault any of them! Absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back. Great for special occasions, business meetings, or a romantic dinner.
Great service, friendly staff, top quality food cooked and seasoned to perfection, so tasty. Best ive had for a while.
I chose this restaurant for a date. The service attitude is very good and the environment is nice. I like the steak and duck liver the most.
One of the best experiences I've had in my locale. Everything from the food to the service was simply exceptional. The team working that evening certainly had their work cut out with us since we were quite unconventional in our ordering (and moving tables). We'd all been to plate day, so we're already a bit sozzled and maybe a bit louder than we ought to have been (sorry if we upset anyone). The team I'm sure we're ready to get home, but at no point forced us out and it was getting quite late. So thanks to all for a great experience! 10/10, highly recommend.
Very attentive staff who are well presented, courteous and professional. Food quality was exceptional and they were more than happy to adapt any dish for allergies where possible. We were there for a celebration and they provided some free drinks and dessert.
Lovely restaurant. Beautiful linens, tableware and glassware. Professional and very welcoming staff. Can recommend Tournedos Rossini, made in the classic style with all of the rich, deliciousness you'd expect. Truly worth every penny. Great selection of wines, ports, cocktails etc. Early dinner special price is a bonus. All in all, a really enjoyable dining experience.
We ordered the cheese and spinach soufflé which was outstanding. The sea bass was very good especially with the grilled shrimp and olive oil and tomatoes. The roe deer was juicy and I liked the winter fruits with it.
Isabella, our waitress, is the sweetest and offered excellent service!
Sampled the seasonal tasting menu
Enjoyed the food and experience.
The restaurant was very busy (I think it always is) staff were efficient and engaging.
Fantastic food washed down with a nice 🍷 wine.
Perfect fine dining
Definitely on my list of great places to eat in Newcastle
You cannot fault this restaurant. Honestly the food quality and the taste is amazing.
Way above every other restaurant in Newcastle. If you like good food this is the place to go!
Keep up the good work guys!
Brian makes the best drinks in the world, and is a great guy. Brooke is a sweetheart, and great to talk to. Green dress (I think Kate) is my future wife, but she just hasn’t realized yet.
Great restaurant! Highly recommend!
Booked this after looking at online reviews and was not disappointed. First time in Newcastle and the meal was well presented and delicious. Attentive staff and a pleasant restaurant made a great first night of our trip. A worthy visit if in town.
We visited 21 for our anniversary dinner, and had the September "bang in season" menu with wine flight. Each dish was incredibly well executed, and paired brilliantly with a glass of wine (or port for the cheese course). Service was excellent throughout. Portions were the perfect size and we left feeling as if the whole thing had been a true experience rather than just a meal. Particular standouts were the almond panna cotta dessert and the grouse pie. Highly recommend for a special occasion or celebration.
One of the greatest restaurants in Newcastle to celebrate a special occasion or just enjoy an evening out. Superb food, attentive service and pleasant surroundings make for a great combination. I have never been disappointed at 21. Recommended.
We had the ‘Autumn in the city’ 5 course tasting menu which was excellent. The flavours of each dish were very well executed and the portion were just right.
We expected an apple crumble dessert but was advised that the kitchen was not happy to serve it as the quality of the apples wasn’t to standard, therefore we were provided with their baked Alaska dessert instead which was outstanding.
Lovely experience and would definitely visit again next time we are in town.
Went for Sunday lunch - they were a little busy and unfortunately the service suffered, it took an hour for the starters to turn up although party I was with made up for it with drinking expensive wine so maybe it’s a tactic :) . Food was great aside from soup starter which was quite poor and tasteless (Jerusalem artichoke) otherwise ok. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend overall.
We had the 5 course seasonal menu with accompanying wine flight which was all delicious. The chef was also able to substitute or modify some dishes to cater for allergies in the party. Service was all excellent and the whole meal was nicely paced with breaks where needed. We also opted for the optional cheese course with port.
Great festive menu at 21. Wide and interesting choice for our party of wide age and tastes. We particularly enjoyed the cheese souffle, pheasant, the chestnut pie (v), fresh doughnuts and chocolate souffle with caramel sauce. Good selection of wines. Pleasant atmosphere and full of diners. Excellent all round.
